Imagine Greater Tucson 2010-11 Phase I Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to Professional and semi-professional sports teams and sporting events |
| A mountain could be turned into an urban outdoor enthusiast paradise. Close the road at the base to stop the illegal activities that continue in the parking lots (do this even if you don't like the rest of the ideas...I'm sick of how dangerous that parking lot is). Create a trail system for different skilled riders. Create lighted mountain bike terrain park. Have street luge/longboard skateboarding on sections of the road. Do something awesome with the hole (maybe a BMX/Skateboard park or the velodrome). Heck put a chair lift from the base to the top...this would allow everyone to enjoy the views w/o allowing it to be trashed like it continues to be. |
| A place for numerous sporting events can be housed here. Will generate revenue to the area. |
| Academics, and Home teams. |
| Access to good medical care/UA. Basketball games, young people in our community that care. |
| Accessibility to mtns & the Wildcats |
| Add a huge sports complex that could host large youth sporting events, especially soccer, and including baseball/softball. |
| Adds to the allure and stature of Tucson |
| Affordable municipal golf |
| Again, I need teh growth to be constant, and a beatufil downtown will attract investment, sports, cultural centers etc... |
| All of my family is from back east so I get visitors a few times/year and they stay for more than just a couple of days at a time. I appreciate being able to take them to places like Old Tucson or the Desert Museum, Rockies spring training games, hiking/tram rides at Sabino Canyon, dinner at fun & unique places like Pinnacle Peak, the Blue Line walking tour downtown, etc. We can find fun activities for all ages to keep us busy without having to leave town every time. |
| All the football games and basketball games |
| Alumni, love the sports teams |
| Am an alumni and enjoy supporting the University and it's athletic programs. |
| Any type of event that engages a large portion of the community, such as the Tucson rodeo and parade, the All Souls Procession, concerts, sports events, the gem show, the Pima County Fair etc. |
| Arizona wildcats |
| Arts as important and well supported as sports |
| Arts/culture/sports |
| As a former athlete and UA graduate I am proud of our athletic programs and coaches. I expect the UA to continue to be an outstanding institution in Arizona and the Pac 10. |
| As a former elementary school teacher in Illinois, I am shocked to see what a short school day, as well as school year, is required in Tucson. The youth I encounter seem to be woefully underserved by the educational as well as social systems in town. Sports isn't everything! |
| As a retiree, I enjoy sporting events, cultural venues, and the ability to interact with people of all ages, including students. |
| As a student-athlete, the program is one of the best athletic departments in the country. The support from the Tucson community and the ties between McKale and Tucsonans are incredible. |
| As an UA alumni and 'Wildcat for Life', I personally believe the UA is one of the key elements in making Tucson really stand out. |
| Athletics Department |
| Attracting large sports teams and facilities |
| Ball park downtown |
| Baseball |
| Baseball spring training |
| Baseball!! |
| Basketball is my favorite sport. I grew up in Indiana where basketball was the only sport that mattered. I've been a Wildcat fan for almost 30 years. |
| Because I like being active |
| Because of No action many of those with clout have let Tucson area falter, ie: baseball, downtown, etc. This weakens the ability to draw people to our area |
| Because we got to move our body around and have some really good fun |
| Being a city of over 1 million, we should be able to support sports franchises of different kinds. One of the biggest losses to our community recently is minor league baseball and spring training. I would like to see spring training brought back. The minimum drive a team in Florida must make during Spring training is around 6 hours to a game. Tucson is only 2 hours to a game and would look very nice to teams in Florida. This, along with minor league baseball, have been part of what make Tucson special. Losing these negatively effects our culture of who we are. |
| Better maintained and lighted public sport facilities |
| Better ua football team |
| Between Uof A sports, local theater and various outdoor opportunities there is much to do is this area for people of all ages. |
| Bmx biking |
| Bring Spring Training Back |
| Bring back Triple A baseball. |
| Bring back baseball teams |
| Bring back major golf tournaments |
| Bring back major league baseball |
| Bring back major league sports |
| Bring back spring training baseball |
| Bring baseball back to Tucson |
| Bring in higher paying jobs and bring back Spring Training |
| Bring more sports (professional) into town |
| Bring sports teams to Tucson |
| Bring spring training back! |
| Build a baseball complex in downtown |
| Build a new arena. |
| Build an ice rink |
| Build more alternative sport facilities |
| Build more parks, more community centers, more cultural/arts centers and more sport centers. |
| Builds community spirit. |
| Buy Tucson! Support local business and patronize local events and businesses. Atract more visitors and don't alienate those we have. All local events are important as they bring visitors to our city. Look at international interest sporting and collecting events. |
| Camaraderie of sporting events |
| Can expose my children to educational, sports, cultural opportunities |
| Can we ever go to the rose bowl ? Win a bowl? |
| Change Speedway Blvd. to Lute Olson Blvd. |
| City support for activity-minded (sports and fitness) events |
| DBuild a baseball stadium and a 15,000 seat arena in downtown Tucson |
| Decisions were and went so wrong. It's embarrassing to be part of a community where leadership doesn't exist |
| Density, not each for his own. Density of business ideas, density of sports complexes to arts to residents. Density of entrepreneurs working together. Tucson fails most here. |
| Diversity is important in every aspect of life. Tucson and Pima County have a very wide variety in most aspects of life. We have Mt. Lemmon, and we have the Sonoran Desert. We have the 17th St. Market and wed have La Encantada. El Guero Canello and Anthony's in the Foothills. Great municipal golf that is quite affordable, and championship golf that is less so... But the diversity throughout the city is remarkable. |
| Do not like cold wet weather. Like outdoor sports, hiling, golf, etc. |
| Downtown needs a sports team, high density housing, larger UofA presence |
| Downtown needs retail stores and a twenty screen movie theatre besides housing, a supermarket, and a sports arena. Denver's LoDo happened after building Coors Stadium. People will go out to eat after a movie or a game. |
| Downtown should be a place that people want to gather for community related events. In my hometown of Oklahoma City, downtown is the place to do business, to go out on the weekend, to catch a ballgame, and have great shopping experiences. It is esthetically pleasing and easy to get around once down there. Anytime I go back home, downtown is the first place we go. |
| Easy access to the outdoors Lot of activities, sports, et Few big city problems - drugs, alcohol, etc. Access to University of Arizona |
| Enjoy athletics, art, music, theater, etc., and all aare of high quality in Tucson |
| Enjoy the games and want to see the program improve, with reach out to all youth and highschool football players in the state and make them uof a fans that is where I believe fan base can grow, Have one non conference game with free tickets so that the experience can be enjoyed by a fan base that is already interested in football. |
| Entertainment - Pro sports |
| Entertainment/sports |
| Everything that an urban area offers is offered here (music, plays, sports, some night life, etc.) or is a reletively short drive north Phoenix. |
| Farmer's markets and quilt classes, free concerts in beautiful parks and a glorious old cathedral, symphony and bluegrass, gem show shopping, street fair, college sports, baseball du jour, great places to walk. Randolph/Reid Park, including Parks & Rec classes, and Sabino Canyon. A neighborhood without lights or sidewalks where I can admire the stars and feel like I'm in a small town. |
| Find some way to get major league baseball back |
| First class sports opportunities |
| Football, basketball, softball, baseball, swimming, ice hockey.... |
| For a city of this size there seems to be an amazing number of opportunities to go to musical events, arts events, festivals, and collegiate sports. All that's missing is major league type sporting events |
| Fun activity |
| GET SPRING TRAINING BACK |
| Get people out of their homes to mix together people of all ages and cultures. Work on changing negative attitudes that have been around for generations that pit one side of town against another. Some folks are afraid to go to the South or West sides of town even though they have never even been in those neighborhoods. Opening the culture avenues will to entice citizens to care about all of Tucson not just their home turf. Open the minds of the citizens to invest in their city and neighbors. Make a concerted effort to encourage all Tucsonans to embrace the UofA and Pima. Create a plan to help citizens to embarce culture, arts and sports to help them join with all other Tucsononas in enjoying the company and contribution of everyone in Tucson. A comprehensive cultural impact plan can be desinged and implemented even with limited resources. |
| Gives us something to do |
| Going to the football games |
| Golf Courses |
| Golf Courses use water. |
| Great entertainment and sports |
| Great entertainment in arts & sports. |
| Great opportunities like Broadway, symphony, sports - but can be lost like Sidewinders, Spring Training if not careful and supportive |
| Great sports, entertainment, good medical facilities |
| Grew up loving the sports teams here. |
| Growing up I always wanted to go there, I received my first degree from there, and UofA sports has always been an attraction. |
| Hard to go to a UofA ballgame |
| Have events that have nationwide appeal, ie accenture golf tournment |
| Having a significant university in our community brings so much to our lives. Educational opprtunities, sports, culture, diversity of ideas, expertise, variety. |
| Having access to an academic health center and great physicians; artistic, athletic and cultural events on campus; the intellectual vitality that radiates from a great university and the discoveries that its faculty bring to the community. |
| Having the university in the city provides me and my family educational opportunities, cultural activities, and sports activities that would not be available without it. |
| Horse racing at Rillito Park Track. |
| How involved/supportive people are of UofA (ex: sports fans) |
| I am (and my family is) a physically active person and love sports. Our climate supports that and our tie to UA Athletics is stong in many sports (basketball, football, softball, swimming and diving, golf, etc.) |
| I am an alumnus of the University of Arizona and have been an Arizona Wildcat fan my entire life. |
| I am very disappointed to see spring training go elsewhere. That was our one ticket to pro-sports |
| I am worried about the educational experience my son will have here in Tucson due to the lack of support our schools seem to have, either from the community or the administrators. Children are our future, and educators are shaping that future. We need to put more into our schools and higher education, not baseball teams and convention centers. |
| I beleive it helps inspire my children to 'want' to attend college. I enjoy attending the sporting events |
| I believe there could be more tournaments throughout the city that bring in southern Arizona teams to play in Tucson. Most tournaments are held in either Phoenix or out of state. It is difficult for these teams to find places to play. |
| I can go to a movie, or a play, or a concert, or play sports, or do whatever I desire. |
| I enjoy U of A sports games. As the teams have gotten better, so has the attendance and hype around their games. |
| I enjoy being able to go to arts, sporting events and other university sponsored or hosted activities. |
| I enjoy following and reading about local sporting events. |
| I enjoy playing soccer yearround. I am happy in sunshine. |
| I enjoy sporting events, arts, lectures and an intellectually and socially diverse population |
| I enjoy the activities offered in a university town, from arts to sports to lecutres on interesting topics. |
| I feel that it employs a lot of people. It brings a sense of community and pride to Tucson and it is so important that locals have access to an insitution in order to get a quality education. It also brings tourism and out of towners to help boost the economy. All the sporting and theatre events the U of A provides is also so important and brings life to Tucson. |
| I find Tucson to be very diverse with an abundance of cultural assets. I believe the UA is possibly the most important asset of the whole region. I think the UA should and could toot it's own horn more and reach out to all citizens to participate in and with the UA. Beyond just sports. I like to old west and hispanic influence that has shaped this entire region. I think Tucson has the ability in the coming decades to mold itself into a more desirable and rich community. I'd like to see Tucson brand an image of itself as a outdoor, healthy, intellectual, culturally rich, environmentally sensitive region of America. I'd like to see Tucson build and expand on it's current reputation as a top tier cycling and endurance training center. Build on the wellness reputation that we have become and to pursue Juaquin Ruiz's vision of Tucson becoming a center for geo tourism. I'd like to see Tucson become the desired community within the sun belt for outdoor oriented, healthy lifestyle oriented people to want to live. We are not SoCal or Phoenix. We are different and we attract different people. |
| I grew up watching the Toros... then the Sidewinders... then the Toros... and now some Portland team is going to be here? We NEED the Toros! |
| I have a small marketing company and UMC is one of my large clients. Being involved with them for the past 5 years has opened my eyes to all the incredible docs and research that we have in our own backyard. I know that some folks think of UA as a small school in a small town with a great basketball program...we are so much more and are growing in every direction so rapidly. |
| I have always lived in a college town. Sporting events, entertainment, cultural events, and college students and faculty result in a comfortable scale and life-style. |
| I like living in a University city. It brings a great deal of enthusiasm for sports, arts and research. There are many offerings for all ages. |
| I like outdoor sports and activities |
| I like the excitement and sports events |
| I like the fact the University of Arizona provides quality entertainment. My family are season ticket holders for football and always enjoy coming up to watch the games. Also, the U of A is here to stay, not like professional teams that always have the option of leaving. |
| I like the sports venues that we can go to in Tucson. |
| I like to attend these type activities. That is why I chose a 'University Town'. |
| I love attending and watching the U of A sports and other school related activities |
| I love my job at the U of A. The U of A enhances the community with education, cultural and sporting events. |
| I love roller derby, and Tucson has a great group in need of physical resources. |
| I love tennis, but courts are not well maintained, specifically Pima West |
| I love that the school is always a center of activity in the middle of Tucson. It offers great theater, music and sporting events. |
| I love that we have retiring people coming, but it is always balanced with the kids coming to the U of A. The focus on education and the great minds that are here because of the U of A. SPORTS, ENTERTAINMENT it is the heart of our community. |
| I love to play soccer and I think it'd be great to get a professional soccer team in Tucson. |
| I love to run, swim, play soccer & softball. It's important to have people to do those things with & friends to support me. The weather here doesn't hurt either :) |
| I loved attending spring training games. If done correctly, these ventures should generate jobs and income for Tucson. |
| I miss going to games at TEP Ball Park and Hi Corbett Field. Huge economic impact on our community also. We are still paying for the cost of TEP, we need to get professional MLB teams to use our facilities here in Tucson!! |
| I never want to see what I saw regarding ASU celebrating on OUR home field again. They had their own private corner for their fans, team, and band. This fueled their performance and became sickening to the loyal UA alumni/fan base at the end of the game. |
| I take adult classes at U of A, Pima CC, attend the opera and ATC, attend sports events (U of A., Accenture matches) - all easily accessible within 30 minutes drive and affordable. |
| I think our city has become the 'Call Center' of the Southwest. While these are jobs that I am grateful stayed here in the US they are not high paying jobs and would like to see other industries take advantage of our great weather and all we have to offer as a community. Please bring back Spring Training Baseball! It was such a great form of entertainment and brought in $$$ for the community because others wanted to escape the winter in the East and Midwest and enjoy our sunshine and a good ballgame! |
| I think so much can be done in Tucson, but our leaders seem to waste so much money planning and replanning and figuring out how to come up with the best plan that makes everyone in the community happy, when really not everyone is happy. Just small interest groups that always have the county's and city's ear are happy. Good leadership will truly create jobs and a better community, because they can make decisions that will help the community grow in a sustainable way. And sustainable does not mean in a way that is just environmentally friendly. It is a way that brings economic stability (jobs), and social stability (places to go like professional sporting events, parks, and places to eat). The leaders in the community are great at saying no to or messing up things that would bring economic and social stability, while at the same time of only focusing in on the environmental side of sustainability. We need good leaders that can act for Tucson, not for the special interest groups. |
| I thought that having three major league baseball teams conduct spring training in Tucson was a major plus and feel that Tucson's appeal is much reduced due to the virtual loss of spring training and the Sidewinders. |
| I went to UA as an undergrad, and now I work here. I think the University brings a lot to the region, in terms of sporting events, cultural events, and art. |
| I would have visiting team sit someone else at the football games. Why is it that when our fans go to away games, that we are separted from each other and we sit in the nosebleed sections or in the midst of the home team. When visiting fans come to AZ stadium, they get to all sit together in section 17, right in front of where their team comes out. This creates a home team advantage at an opposing school feeling for them. It is especially 'fueling' for them if they bring their band like ASU did. It really urked me that they had their own little corner to celebrate after the game. This would NEVER happen and did not happen when we went to ASU last year. We were assigned seats way up high around other UA fans, but we were too high for the team to feel our influence. Our team came through the tunnel on the opposite end of the field from where our band was stuck (in the corner). Even though we pulled out the win, we did not have a section to celebrate with the band/team at the end of the game. I would really like Athletics to look into scattering visiting fans so they are not sitting right over the entrance of their team and to place any visiting band away from the team entrance and fans. |
| I'd like to see music, art, and theater in the parks rise to the level of soccer, baseball, and softball. I love Tucson's parks, and there is a great diversity of activities available in them. But I'd like to see the concept of replacing an athletic field with a performance space, or even open space, be just as appealing as the opposite. |
| I'm a Phoenix native who attended U of A in the mid-90s so I enjoy coming back a few times a year for sporting events. |
| I'm a UA graduate and I enjoy supporting my school, running into old classmates and attending sporting events. |
| I'm a huge U of A sports fan, and feel it's the strongest civic bond Tucson has, of any kind. Where else to you see such a blend of ages, ethnicities, religions, political persuasions, socioeconomic statuses, etc. in one venue? Beyond sports, the U of A campus is a central gem in this city, with beautiful green open spaces, consistent red brick buildings, and a climate that values learning and research. |
| I'm a third generation alumus. The UA is in my blood and its athletic teams are a passion of mine. I'm proud to be a part of an institution so rich in tradition and which excels in so many fields. It's the greatest asset of our community. |
| I'm an avid sports fan and that it would make Tucson more of an attraction |
| I'm not a sports person by any means, but I can clearly see the damage to Tucson's reputation and the major loss of revenue. Tucson should be encouraging exhibitions and events such as this to establish themselves here. |
| If the community ever wants to have more good paying jobs it must place more emphasis on education and it must provide the resources to support education. Charter schools are not a solution. There must be far less emphasis on athletics in schools and the university |
| Intellectual discourse, good sports teams. |
| It allows me the opportunity to do those things that I find important, such as sports, riding my motorcycle and enjoying the outdoors. |
| It brings the best of academia, diversity, Arts, Sports, services and pride. |
| It is a focal source of pride in its accomplishments in academics, the arts and in athletics. |
| It is comfortable living here. There is a strong educational component because of the University and the University adds a strong sports and cultural component as well. People care about their own quality of life and the quality of life of others who live here. The segments blend well: anglos & hispanics, young and old, long-time residents & newcomers. |
| It is embarrassing to answer negative comments about his outbursts. I personally like what he has done for the program until now. TV cameras are watching for those eyecatching moments. Not good PR and not good for future recruiting. |
| It is one of the great places that seems to bring the whole community together. It seems that this one place touches all in Tucson. You may have a relative that attends or graduated from the U of A. Or you are a fan of its athletic events. |
| It is the key to our cultural richness. It provides cultural, educational and medical enhancements. It brings interesting, educated, productive, caring people to our community. The campus itself is a wonderful urban park of sorts. It provides us with common things (like sports) to rally around as a community. |
| It was the first collage football games i ever went to and was proud to send the kid to school there, when i move from NY |
| It's easy to access the outdoors with hiking trails, sports facilities, parks. |
| It's where I went to college. I love going to their sporting events, football and basketball in particular, to root for the Wildcats. |
| Keeps the community young and active, provides many touchpoints with Tucson residents, offers great sporting and cultural events |
| LaCross |
| Less golf courses |
| Let's face it - development in a desirable is a powerful engine. We seem to do more to reverse development than encourage with government regulations/restrictions; zoning and resource issues; lack of support for existing businesses (professional baseball); etc. |
| Like to go see them live |
| Loss of Spring Training |
| Loss of professional sports due to lower tax incentives from Tucson to Phoenix or from Tucson to Oro Valley |
| Love game days (UA sports), unifies people in the community |
| Major league baseball |
| Major sporting activities |
| Minor league baseball (update Hi-Corbett!), Food/wine festivals, chili cookoffs, music or festivals, wild west themed events, etc. - all capitalizing on the region's VERY rich history, culture, cuisine and people. |
| More enthusiasm for sports |
| More fan support for our home teams |
| More minor league sports (professional) |
| More opportunities for youth - sports, classes, alternative activities with longer hours available at low or no cost |
| More pro sports |
| More sporting events |
| More sports activities for kids |
| More sports activities for the youth |
| More ways to build support (meeting new people, access to sports) |
| More/better equipped parks and city sports leagues |
| Most major sporting events, concerts and shows are in Phoenix rather than Tucson. A few more local options would help improve the entertainment scene in Tucson. |
| Much demand for current sports facilities |
| Music, Dance, & Sports has been the means cultures and societies grew, learned form each other and others learned about another culture & society all through History> Civility!!! |
| My family and I have embraced the Wildcats as the home team. We have not missed attending a home basketball or football game and have even travelled to road games to root them on. |
| My family enjoys the academic community and everything it brings including the obvious higher education opportunities but also the arts, the museums, the lectures, the sports, and the university area and energy from students. |
| My family has now been in Tucson for five generations. My childeren are groing up in a community that charishes it's rich Hispanic history. The University of Arizona has played an important part in my family's history. The Tellez family consists of alumni, but most importantly, 'die-hard' supporters of Wildcat sports. |
| My husband and I are avid sports fans and this is the biggest 'game' in town - both football and basketball |
| My wife and I are alums - I think college towns are more lively/interesting usually... UA sports and cultural events are a fairly big part of our lives |
| My wife and I both have degrees from there, as did both of my parents. One of my sons is currently a student at the U of A. Also enjoy the basketball and softball teams. |
| Need more major sports teams |
| Need to bring in more sporting events, a pro team, or bring back spring training |
| No more Spring Training baseball |
| No more golf courses or large community development |
| Not sure who came up with that hair brained idea. The TEP sports complex should have been located downtown and would have achieved much greater success. |
| OP Lions Rugby |
| One reason why we chose tucson as a place to live was the access to major league spring training games |
| Our TEAM! |
| Our culture is the sports teams, the symphony, art museums, restaurants; all the things that make this place unique |
| Our interaction with the UofA athletics only enforces this feeling of a small town. Being of an older generation (I am 57) and involved with collegiate sports, keeps me 'in the loop'. |
| Our wonderful weather conditions make it a perfect sports town. |
| Outdoor activity and sports orientation |
| Parking for games, museums is very difficult |
| Part of question 1 above. Bring back high-level professional baseball, including triple A and spring training. Tucson is too large to not be able to support a team. With a stadium in downtown, attendance will be no problem, which will make Tucson an attactive place to have a team. |
| Permanent AAA Baseball |
| Phoenix has done a good job with the sports arenas attracting business to the city center |
| Plan better for maintaining baseball in Tucson |
| Play sports year round in Tucson |
| Playing sport |
| Plenty of Tucson courts |
| Plenty of funding for tech and sports even with lack of funding |
| Professional Sports team |
| Professional hockey |
| Professional sports |
| Put real amenities downtown. An arena so that all events are easily accessible. We should have a sports arena downtown also. the big entertainers don't automatically go to the casinos which are far from the heart of town.. |
| Put small stadium down town |
| Puts Tucson on the map as a desirable winter vacation destination. |
| Quality of life due to good weather most of the year - walk, hiking, outdoor events, parks, professional baseball (now gone) fair, rodeo, Mt. Lemmon, Sabino Canyon, Tombestone, Bisbee, Tubac, The RIVERWALK trails ! |
| Reasonably priced cultural and sporting events. |
| Recruit new baseball spring training teams. |
| Research and development, positive effect on workforce, provides an economic boost and University of Arizona Athletic program unites are community and provides great entertainment. |
| Resources: The University, medical centers, cultural activities, athletic events |
| San Antonio has the river walk. San Diego has old town. We have...???? We really need to build on our strength Gem shoe, Desert Museum, Old Tucson and some how tie it together. We need minor league professional team such as the ufl or some like that. |
| Sell the stadiam its in a terrible place. we should of built it behind carls jr on congress and i-10 this would have helped rio nervo and the gem show hotels and pleaces to eat would have joined we would still have the diamond backs |
| Services at neighborhood centers have been cut to the bone. It is not even possible to access the centers for neighborhood activities. Recreation activities that are not paid for by outside interests (Soccer leagues, baseball leagues) are now non-existent. |
| Since Tucson does not have an abundance of things to do (lack of professional sports teams, outlet mall, amusement parks, etc) having a quick way to get to Phoenix would make it easier to get out of town on the weekends. |
| Southern Arizona missed out on the opprotunity to host high level state competitions due to lack of fields. It gets old having to go to Phoenix, and spend lots of money in Phoenix, month after month. |
| Sporting events at the University of Arizona |
| Sports Arena in South Tucson. |
| Sports Complex Facilities |
| Sports at UA |
| Sports bring out of state people |
| Sports district (preferably downtown). It brings money, invigorates the community, and creates a common bond |
| Sports for kids |
| Sports town |
| Sports venues |
| Sports- I want teams to create a sense of community and brings revenue |
| Spring Training |
| Spring training |
| Spring training and minor league baseball |
| Subsidize a venue for Tucson Roller Derby. |
| Sunshine makes me happy and I love to play golf. |
| Support academics just as much as sports. |
| Support the velodrome, more skateboard parks, BMX parks, Climbing facilities etc. It will make the city more attractive to the 20 somethings for living and visiting. I'm sick of hearing about how awesome Portland is. The weather there is crappy yet they rule, becase they support the alternative culture of the community. I can't get my 20 and 30 somethings to visit Tucson, because Portalnd is way more attractive. |
| TEP |
| THERE ARE TEAMS IN FLORIDA THAT WE COULD ATTRACT - AND BUILD A STADIUM NEAR 10 AND THE U OF A AND MAKE IT A JOINT USE FACILITY WITH MINOR LEAGE BASEBALL POST SPRING TRAINING. WE PROBABLY NEED TO GET 3 OR 4 TEAMS |
| Tailgating fun times! |
| Tennis |
| Tep ball park |
| The City of Tucson does not support competitive programing for youth. Pools are not built to support competitive teams fields do not compare to the facilities in the Phx area. |
| The Padrres are our last chance. Lets make it work. |
| The TCC is outdated. Also, a new arena could attract some sports teams. Building an arena would also create jobs. |
| The U of A athletics |
| The U of A is a top-notch university -- the best in the state. It is the one thing that does tie our diverse community together, with education, sciences of the future, jobs, sports and philanthropy. |
| The U of A provides enrichment, opportunity to learn, and athletics. |
| The UA gives us the opportunity to be a college town with sports events, museums, the Festival of Books, etc. The more times I can get my kids on campus, the more comfortable they are with it, themore they will see the U. as a place they must go. |
| The University of Arizona is our crown jewel fueling knowledge based discoveries and high tech job growth, sporting events, fine arts and so much more. We have arts, culture (from southwestern/hispanic/tribal to symphony/Arizona Theatre/UA presents/museums), restaurants, sports (outdoor and spectator), mountains and deserts, plants and wildlife, gem shows and rodeo. |
| The University offers so much to the community from continuing education, to preforming arts and athletics; many of which are comparable to professional offerings in other cities |
| The UofA is a 'centerpiece' of knowledge, learning & activities in the community. UofA sports & cultural events provide excitement & entertainment for many. |
| The Wildcats |
| The art/theatre/sports for entertainment |
| The baseball park TEP should have been built downtown. |
| The beautiful weather allows almost constant outside activity. It's perfect for sports, fitness, leisure, gardening, etc. The abundant sunshine keeps me happy and the ability to be outside keeps me healthy. |
| The business community and entertainment needs to expand. Baseball is gone...it needs to come back! Retail choices are limited...there are the same stores in all the malls -how about some new choices. |
| The campus is quite beautiful and safe. There are numerous activities, including sporting events, performances, and public lectures. It is also surrounded by interesting and fun places, like University Avenue and nearby 4th street. |
| The city should have a professional sports team |
| The lack of flights in and out of Tucson is a negative and the reason we lose out on things such as Spring Training needs improvement as well |
| The opportunities to attend and/or participate in cultural, sport, and educational events are abundant at the University. |
| The people who live here are friendly and enjoyable. There is lots of culture. I love the university and it's many offerings for sports, art, history and theater. |
| The public golf courses should pay for pros to do the courses. It would save money in the long run and we could have some great city golf. Also, in city planning of new areas - let the pros do it, instead of each person on the city council trying to figure out what to do. We are running out of time. |
| The sport teams, the arts and music, stores, young feeling, and the youth that generate the energy for thought and civility - hope and future. |
| The sports events in town should be held on the FRONTAGE ROADS (bike races and marathons). Keep the paticipators out of the way of the rest of the tax paying public. This will never happen. |
| The u of A is important for the community in many ways, including its educational opportunities, its economic benefits, and its extra curricular offerings, including sports and cultural activities. |
| The university and downtown area offers many good events - cultural and sports. At times feels like a college town. |
| The uofa football program. |
| The variety of cultural, entertainment, enrichment and sports activities offered at the U of A compensates for the lack of other arts and sports offerings in the area |
| The world class programs including the students, professors - their research and work - plus the programs offered to the general public at Centennial Hall, School of Music, Poetry Center and the bookstore as well as the athletics. |
| There are no major activities besides U of A. The spring training games are now all up in Phoenix. There are no professional sports teams. A majority of all the major concerts are held in Phoenix. The night life for late 20's needs to improve.. Not everyone is in college. |
| There is a small community feel to our large city. I enjoy the cultural activities (gem show, ATC theater) and U of A sports (football, basketball and women's volleyball). |
| There is a university that offers a lot of cultural and learning opportunities. There are affordable (usually, compared to bigger cities) concerts, art events and sporting events. Medical facilities, recreation, good food. |
| There is constantly a demand for lighted soccer/ultimate frisbee fields that Tucson cannot meet. We are trying to stay active as a community, but it's hard when you have to drive to two different fields in one night, for two games. |
| There is not a lot to do around this town- esp for young people. Better nightlife, downtown, museums, sports teams. |
| There should be a committment in bringing in more sporting opportunities to the community. |
| They were here, they were gone, they came back again, they are leaving again. I like the Tucson Toros - that ballpark on Ajo sucks! |
| Thing of all the things we've lost because of our economic environment; spring training baseball comes to mind |
| This is a desert and not every sprawling private community needs a golf course, nor is there water to sustain such extravagance! In my view, it is a game that uses resources that are precious in this climate wastefully and is a game of exculsivity and not inclusivity. The continual building of new housing does not seem to keep in mind the limited water resources with which we live. |
| This is very important in growing our economy, which should be a big factor in everyone's life. It's a terrible shame that we've lost spring training, the film industry and now at possible risk are the golf tournament and gem show. How can it be that our population is many times what it was when those events first came to Tucson and now we can't support them? |
| To see the baseball games |
| Tone down Mike Stoops sideline antics. |
| Tucson Padres, Tucson Toros...we need to get Spring Training back in Tucson!! |
| Tucson Toros |
| Tucson and UofA football |
| Tucson definitely has a diverse and large enough population that it could support more retail, attractions, recreation and sporting opportunities. |
| Tucson does not capitalize on the tourism that our region should have. The gem show, golfing, and rodeo during one month should not be all we have to offer. There is not really much entertainment in the Tucson area. Where's our big jobbing.com arena with sports bars, shopping, football, entertainment??? The investment value to people outside our community is minimized by our availability and tranportation limits. |
| Tucson has an incredible wealth of world-class outdoor recreation sites and other potential sites. If Tucson promoted itself as an outdoor recreation paradise for mt and road bikers, rock climbers, golfers, skateboarders and others it could become a destination city. Drop the baseball dreams. Tucson is happy supporting the U of A athletics. |
| Tucson has the gem and mineral show and other events. Great place to live and of course, UofA football and other sports |
| Tucson is a great place to play and get involved in sports. Especially to watch. There is no reason we shouldnt be able to suppourt a minor league baseball team, spring training, horse racing, etc. |
| Tucson is missing out! We need a professional hockey team! |
| Tucson needs to do a better job attracting major sports facilities to the area. I realize that many Tucsonans still have a bad taste in their mouth about spending money for an expensive facility and then paying exorbitant prices for a seat. But it needs to be done. Sell blocks of bonds to investment companies in addition to individuals. |
| Tucson needs to find a way to replace the baseball teams and what may be the loss of the gem show. |
| Tucson offers a wide variety of activities; the arts, sports, and lots of architecture! |
| Tucson offers an array of arts, sports and other things to do. |
| Tucson would really benefit from a professional sports team, both culturally and economically. The loss of spring training baseball was huge in that regard. |
| Tucson's only ice rink shut down a few years ago. Youth ice sports are very important, and a great alternative to the soccer and and baseball leagues that everyone else plays in. There are a lot of people that live here that grew up in places with ice, so I think it would be a good idea. |
| Tucson, the city limits, is only a small part of our metropolitan whole. We need to work together--the city and the unincorporated county--to keep this a great place to live. Our city and county govts. are distressingly unfunctional. We need a strong mayor system: someone who has the brains, the guts, and the power to envision a decent future, and work to make it a reality. Not a crowd of councilpersons and supervisors with their own petty interests, and the inability to say 'No' to anyone. Case in point: what has happened to Rio Nuevo? Disastrous! Downtown should be built up and running by now, and instead we've wasted tens of millions of dollars on 'studies' and a bridge to pretty much nowhere. We need a decent symphony hall: not the harebrained idea of an aquarium. We need museums! We need decent, well-lighted parking and fine restaurants. We needed to put together a tax-package that would convince some teams to keep spring training here--though after the fiasco of situating the ballpark in the middle of NOWHERE, that might have been unrescuable. We need a first class hotel downtown, not a run-down third rate hotel. We need decent shopping: why can't we put together a package that would attract a store like Nordstrom's? |
| U of A |
| U of A Sports |
| U of A basketball ( go WILDCATS) |
| U of A football |
| U of AZ football, basketball(mens), semipro baseball |
| UA .. Go Cats! |
| UA basketball |
| UA games, golf, swimming, bike paths |
| UA is the driver of our local economy. It is the source of so many 'quality of life' elements (e.g. collegiate athletics, night life, special events) and is a constant fountain of innovation and creativity in our region. |
| UA sporting events |
| UA sports |
| UA sports & food |
| University of Arizona Athletics |
| University of Arizona football tailgating |
| University of Arizona sports |
| University of Arizona sports. As a UofA graduate, I am very proud of my wildcats. |
| University of Arizona sports/culture |
| University of Arizona's events (sports, music & ballet) |
| University town- sports, economic development, and workforce development |
| Uof a football |
| UofA Football Season & Baseball spring training games |
| UofA sports |
| UofA ties the community together (the Obama visit, sports, it's the "center of Tucson" |
| Water sports |
| We are a community of entreprenuers and as such, we do not seem to know how to work together to achieve common goals (like supporting schools, development plans, sports teams, etc.) |
| We are born and bread Wildcats. Enough said! |
| We can attend competitive sports events in relative comfort |
| We enjoy the Marachi Festival, Tucson Symphony, Arizona Opera, Tucson Pops and the U of A Presents, U of A Football, Basketball and Softball. We support all of these things!! |
| We enjoy the many sporting events, Football, Basketball and Softball. |
| We focus on baseball to the exclusion of the possibilities presented by our many talented perofrmers and artists. Tucson Electric Park could be Tucson Electric Theater with less effort than we think. |
| We have an incredibly diverse cultural scene (including sports). Tucson is interesting, there is so much to learn and there is always something fun to do. |
| We have been involved in Arizona athletics for over almost 7 years now. After being involved with Coach Candrea, I find Coach Stoops to be a very unprofessional, rude and embarrassing example to not only his players and staff but to the community as a whole. |
| We have lived in university towns for the past 40 years and enjoy the atmosphere created by sports and arts offerings. |
| We have lost a ton of revenue becuase the city wouldn't improve the facilities down here |
| We have lost sports teams, organizations , and events |
| We keep losing things that enrich the lives of Tucsonans, draw tourists, provide jobs & make money to other parts of the state and country(Spring Training, minor league baseball, conventions, music and athletic events). We need to move forward quickly and do something or we could lose the Gem Show & Match Play Golf. We are originally from Indiana. Indianapolis totally remade itself into the Amature Sports Capitol of the Country. Portland, Seattle, & San Antonio have done great things that keep residents living there and draw vacationers. Tucson needs to find an identity, promote it, build to it and make money from it. |
| We lost spring training baseball, there's not much in the way of sports and other entertainment, except UofA. Well planned City events can also be a source of pride - large scale street events, traveling road shows, Pro exhibition games, concerts in the park, etc. |
| We love living in a University town. We love the diversity it brings to the community. We love events on U of A campus, including the Tucson Festival of Books, Arizona Athletics (esp. the Women's Basketball games), Women's & LGBT film series, UA Presents/Centennial Hall, Southwest Native Arts Festival, AIDS Walk |
| We need a convention center & other venues for events & sports |
| We need a new baseball team |
| We need more sports teams here |
| We need to attract a Triple A franchise to Tucson and to bring more people to downtown Tucson. A baseball stadium with either downtown or mountain views will bring around 10,000 people to downtown Tucson. Additionally, a 15,000 seat arena with luxury boxes would attract concerts, a minor league basketball or hockey team, NCAA men's basketball tournaments, and possibly 1 or 2 UofA basketball games. |
| We need to create a central location in Tucson that will draw concerts, cultural and sports events and BUSINESS!! |
| We need to get and keep more professional sports teams. |
| We need to increase the number of free or reduced price recreational programs for youth. We need more centers where youth can hang out after school. The facilities need to stay open late. The facilities need to provide the following resources: jobs, educational activities, sports, sex and health education. |
| We need to pull in more events. That means building an arena that will attract BIG atrist. How about a professional team in Tucson. We are not using the TEP Field to its fullest potential. HOw about NBA or MLS teams. |
| We seem to shoot down any suggested improvements (transportation, downtown, spring training, Rio Nuevo, re-structuring govt., new industry) instead of working together to forge compromises and solutions. It's almost like we can't trust each other or just like to say 'no'. Business and neighborhood interests really all want the same thing: jobs, quality of life, strong health and education systems. Nothing can improve without change, so let's all work together. |
| We want sports at our schools! |
| We wanted to live in a community large enough to have services, amenities, access to sports, entertainment, etc. - but not so big that it becomes hard to navigate the city. |
| We would enjoy going to more athletics...but where the last stadium was built is like no man's land for the bulk of the community. I don't feel that the professional business community endorsed and promoted the athletic possibilities we had and it seems to have fell apart. |
| We've spent all that money and now we have no pre-season teams even coming here. Why? |
| Weather & the Wildcats |
| Well, it started with Coach O. I am a crazy UofA basketball fan. I love all UofA sports but enjoy the bball the best. |
| Whatever draws and keeps people here, it produces a wealth of fine arts, sports and cultural events that seem huge for the size of population. |
| Whether it is athletic events, or open lectures, the University gives Tucson a Univeristy town vibe. |
| Whether it's parks for kids, or senior league baseball, there is something here for everyone. |
| While there are some great parks for kids around Tucson, when looking at field usage for sports (which can be vital to youth development in a variety of areas), Tucson is lacking. The costs to use the fields goes up and makes participating in healthy outdoor activities/sports for youth more challenging which in turn depletes these programs and makes Tucson less appealing... |
| Why can't pro sports survive in Tucson? |
| Why is the University Band not in more of the parades? Why doesn't the university have a greater presence in our public libraries? Why isn't there a UA Sun Tran sponsored bus. Why do we not see more Red and Blue around the city during big games. I thin the city could host a lot of tailgating type events downtown and have buses transport people to the game from there. Charging for parking at Congress and I-10 and encouraging people to tailgate there would be great. |
| With the year-round decent weather, one can engage in activities year-round from sporting events to social activities. |
| Without the U of A, we wouldn't have many of the arts that I was praising above. The U brings us great sports events, and tremendous international prestige because of our science (Kitt Peak, Biosphere II, etc), community lectures. It also, because of all the wonderful young people, helps keep our community youthful and innovative. |
| You can golf year-round here, which is great! There is also an overwhelming amount of quality food establishments here serving regional food, whether it is a Sonoran Dog or perfectly cooked 'cowboy' steak, the food is great all over town. |
| You can't beat a research one university for pumping grads, research dollars, professional development opportunities, and sports into the local economy. I'm thrilled UA is heading downtown - I'm hopeful they will make the most of this opportunity. |
