Imagine Greater Tucson 2010-11 Phase I
Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to

Tolerance and respect

12006's Region Transportation Authority has been met with great distrust and dissatisfaction, and the public's confidence has largely been lost. With a referendum or voter initiative, it could be re-designed to equitably serve the population for which it was designed.
2A better/more people friendly dog pound!
3A community in which people are respectful of each other is a community that prospers - materially as well as spiritually
4A community needs a core to be proud of and to focus their energies upon rather than splintering into small areas of competition
5A great sense of community though we are highly dysfunctional and disconnected from being truly effective on high levels.
6A lot of racism agaisnt latin people
7A more powerful combined govt. could stand up to some of the nonsense coming out of our state leg.
8A positive feeling from Tucson and Pima County in general not "those old folks"
9A very large Percentage of our income comes from the Mexican Consumer they deserve respect
10AZ viewed unfairly. Categorized as bigots and has a negative image
11Absence of cooperation leads to conflict
12Acknowledge that children having children, homeless & impoverished women having children leads to dire circumstances for decades
13After 25 years of hustle bustle in Phoenix, it is so nice to be back home. More culture, more hispanic influence, beautiful environment (the surrounding mountains and recreation opportunitiies)...
14Again since cars are for isolating yourself from your neighbors, and since they contribute to obesity, pollution, and repeated moments of detached aggression towards others, they should be set aside within city limits. Bicycles are all we need as an alternative to our legs and public transit. I've been doing so for almost three years now.
15Again, diversity is great. Vibrant Mexican and Native American cultures, plus wild west white people and storied African American community. Except for all the military/Border Patrol dickwads, everyone works together as a community for a better future.
16Agaisnt women and children
17Aircraft noise
18All 'great' cities have a core location that attracts people. I am new here (3-4 years), but all of the finger pointing and accusing over the past is not doing any of us any good. Find people who want to make things work, and get moving.
19Although I value Tucson's cultural diversity and am not alone in this regard, I have found that there is a deep seated sense of entitlement and almost imperialistic attitude on the part of some of my fellow citizens and others who have expressed overtly racist and disrespect of minorities
20Although Tucson is far more liberal than the rest of the state, we still have hate-motivated violence and bigotry. It disturbs me when people express opinions that Illegal immigrants should die out in the desert for crossing an imaginary line. It seems profoundly wrong to sentence people to death for being too poor to legally apply for citizenship.
21Although there is a great amount of Tucsonans that value education, most don't get involved and foster the changes necessary. Throwing money at a problem rarely solves anything. Changing the way teachers are valued and treated along with administration restructuring are needed.
22Antagonistic jurisdictions
23Anti immigration laws and racism
24Anti-growth attitude
25Anti-immigrant attitudes
26Arizona politics are terrible. There is too much stupidity and racism in the legislature, they pass terrible laws like guns in bars/schools, and too many cuts to education. Even on a local level, where the politics are more liberal, the city council has made may bad decisions (specifically with Rio nuevo)
27Arrogant drivers
28As a community we need to make an effort to reduce the stigma attached to mental health issues
29As a group of geographically proximate cities, we all seem to bash each other, compare ourselves to each other, and generally promote an us versus them attitude that does not foster a cooperative environment
30As a native and being of Hispanic heritage, for most of my life I experienced inclusivity and respect here. (I fear that this is changing/being lost in recent times.)
31As community continues to grow and we look towards future. If there is not a better traffic flow I feel the community will start to feel more disjointed and not a cohesive community
32As much as diversity is a positive in Tucson, the hispanic (mexican) influence is equally negative. It creates a public safety challenge and through recent 'boycott' messages it has now had a negative economic influence.
33As the violence increases the entire region will be negatively impacted. I am especially sad to be scared to go into Mexico which was one of the reasons I moved here.
34Assure that the laws are enacted that reflect values: SB1070
35Attitudes about the diversity within city
36Attitudes in Tucson could be more positive with people working together, thereby supporting a stronger community feeling. I wish business and neighborhood people would stop being so self-centered and become real community stewards. Invest a buck - increase your value by ten!
37Attitudes of some closed minded liberals
38Attitudes. that one that insists on clinging to the past.
39Barriers between people
40Battle between infill vs. no infill major hurdle
41Be cognizant of private property rights
42Because I feel a progressive society fosters free thoughts and values tolerance
43Because a lot of people suffer from discrimination that can not live in the United States
44Because everyone needs to have equal rights
45Because if we discriminated less everything would be better
46Because it makes me feel bad
47Because of the 'no growth' coalition, our planned growth and quality of growth has been bad at best. We also miss out on good job growth.
48Because there are a lot of young students and unattached older people, the community still feels like families are an afterthought. The education system, children's care both physical and mental have major deficiencies.
49Because there are people who do not know how to communicate and moreover make the places uglier
50Because there is discrimination and this is very bad
51Because there is more people who don't like to talk or even to help
52Because they are all prejudist against latinos
53Because they discriminate agaisnt those who do not have papers
54Because they need to treat us equally
55Because we are all humans and we all deserve civil rights
56Begin with discrimination
57Being here for many years, I've seen many changes from very good to many I resent. I dislike most the polarized politics and where we're going
58Better compromising between neighborhoods and progress
59Better funding and respect for public schools.
60Better government, less discrimination of people with ethnic looks, better police attitudes
61Between Cultures they should respect each other. We need to educate ourselves between cultures.
62Bigotry
63Black community divided by city location, church affiliation, and few numbers
64Bring more tolerance and forgiveness
65Bullying by tea party people is appalling need to find a means to have bi-partisan decisions
66Burnish, don't tarnish, Tucson's reputation
67Business UNfriendliness
68C.P.S. has a large control in Tucson compared to other parts of Arizona. They took my daughter for 4 months!
69Can you have one without the other? The "small town feel" and "provincialism."
70Can't do much about it but our media is terrible. Sensationalized, slanted reporting, lack of investigation, seems to be pitting cities against each other, and be influenced by those with deep pockets with no sense of journalistic integrity.
71Chain link fences and barking dogs
72Change and stop overt attitude of hate and intolerance directed at specified groups of people trickling in
73Change the conflicts in the political arena
74Changes in the existing political structure are long overdue. Any opportunities to reduce party division, to fund elected positions so there are quality candidates would be a positive step. Elected leaders band together along party lines often to the detriment of the community.
75Christians are criticized
76City council is very partisan. Desperatly need differing views and opinions. City manager has proven to be totally unqualified for the job. Need fiscal accountability and responsibility and smart growth decisions.
77City fathers and the business sector are too focused on service industry employment that maintain low paying jobs. Community leaders do not emphasize the importance of education. Nor do their want highly educated individuals in the community.
78City is now just a working and tourist place. Very divided.
79Civano as example of sense of place but exclusive to people with money and cars secluded
80Close-minded approach to politics and society
81Closed mindedness of old-timers
82Coming from the Southeast part of the country - I have lived first hand the divisiveness of not being accepting of other skin colors. I love the southwest because people are more open minded and more educated. I am proud to now live in area like this. However, I am embarrassed at how some fellow Arizonans are creating division. I don't think it is a race issue however so much as an economic issue so I have hope that we come up with a solution.
83Common courtesy/country like hospitality/casual living/slower paced/people friendly/SW attitude vs east or west coast/embraces Mexican Culture and other cultures/lots of liberals/UA and Pima/Good libraries and parks/
84Communication barrier between English and Spanish speakers
85Community acceptance of differences
86Community awareness greed, self-interest, conflicts of interest
87Community encourages and values diversity in all areas
88Community leaders have no vision for the community's future and progress--they let those with money or power influence their thinking and decisions.
89Community members need to be more friendly with each other.
90Community respect for Tucson's heritage and culture
91Community self-hate (we criticize ourselves a lot!)
92Competition between democrats and republicans is getting out of hand -- disrespectful campaigns are now the norm.
93Competition over collaboration (manipulative behavior over the lack of resources) foster more collaboration
94Concern for our community allow / plan for change carefully
95Conflict or at least lack of cooperation between city and county elected officials
96Conservative values (selfishness, competition, winner-take-all, anti-government) destroy any possibility of a thriving, satisfying community life
97Contentiousness between different interest groups in region regarding development and growth
98Create a better sense of community
99Critical issue that is polarizing the region and our nation. We live it daily. We must not let negative stereotypes/racism/xenophobia stop us from coming together to find a workable local solution that acknowledges families' longevity/history/contribution, instead of simplistic attachment of labels/shunning/etc.
100Cultivate respect for other cultures
101Cultural recognition
102Current system polarizes individuals and nothing happens - backwards/forwards
103Cycling is a healthy and viable alternative to auto transit which splinters communities, makes our cities dirty, loud and unlivable...and HOT!
104DM airforce base--the noisy flights
105Deny illegals schooling and other freebees.
106Descrimintaion to Mexicans
107Differences may become obstacles
108Difficult to work with as a business person. I would characterize it as business unfriendly
109Disconnect
110Disconnect of values from Maricopa County
111Disconnected youth/people- bully culture
112Discourage political raving, hate, etc.
113Discrimination
114Discrimination against mexican hispanics
115Disproportionate power of small interest groups - political
116Distinct territorial 'boundaries'
117Distrust of motives among groups
118Ditto from above. They have thwarted business development in greater Tucson to the max.
119Diversity gives a depth to the city and a tolerance to others. Even though we are near a million inhabitants, the feel of Tucson is like that of a small town.
120Diversity of culture offers windows into our local and regional history and its practices. Diversity offers all of us the opportunity for increased tolerance in an increasingly mulitcultural world.
121Diversity/tolerance
122Divide between people, views and values
123Divided - no consensus
124Division
125Divisive, mean-spirited politics & lack of leadership
126Divisiveness; political and ethnic
127Do some kind of poll or public education regarding available jobs that one is willing to take- then figure how to import labor without giving citizen rights to non-citizens and their families. First provide and make availabe those rights to U.S. citizens without all of the hassle
128Do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Be nicer on the road and others will be nicer.
129Don't want an LA. I like the small town feel, Provincial has a negative connotation and don't think that term applies
130Dumb, opinionated people and politicians who listen to them
131Dysfunctional government - they don't relate to each other
132ESL programs don't value students as adults - Don't see a valuable role for themselves in the community
133Each time an important decision about the future must be made, the community weighs in and tears it down. The electeds get 'cold feet,' so nothng really ever moves forward.
134Economic growth is thwarted by growth/change resistance.
135Education leads to sustaining the environment, respecting others no matter color, creed, or religion
136Education: apathy.
137Elected leaders are not visionary, do not provide initiatives in the best interst of the community, are solely partisan
138Emphasis on funding education and more respect for educators
139Encourage many persons to go back to where they came from. Leave Tucson.
140Encourage more Jurisdictional competition
141Encourage people/business to leave Tucson.
142Entitlement mentality
143Ethics are important
144Ethnic prejudice
145Ethnic separation
146Even adjacent neighborhoods don't cross the road
147Even good people don't seem to have much impact, so maybe it is the system. Need to stop the crazy decide one thing this week and something else next week routine.
148Everyone complains about Tucson without even knowing all the good things that happen here.
149Everyone hates a mess. When your city looks a mess, you cannot be proud of it, and then you do not make it a point to take care of other things. When it looks nice, you tend to keep it nice. And feel good about it.
150Everyone needs to dump the NIMBY attitude. Development can be benefiical in every regard if done thoughtfully.
151Everyone should be here as a a citizen, have resident's work permit or a foreign passport as a visitor. All people here should speak the same language should it be Spanish or the American version of English
152Extreme conservative politics, nasty rhetoric
153FRAGMENTATION of resources and programs
154Families suffer, especially the children
155Fear of other cultures
156Find ways to reduce the xenophobia and racism the has emerged in the last decade
157Finger pointing
158Fix the dis-connect between County Government and local government
159Focus on 'my neighborhood' versus what is best for all
160Foothills separate
161For a city, Tucson provides and atmosphere that is accessible both with respect to cost of entertainment and ability to get to and into most venues.
162For example, when I drive in Oregon, I notice people drive the speed limit, they don't cut other drivers off, they don't run red lights, they let people in who need to get on the road or switch lanes to turn.
163For over 20 years I have live in an historical neighborhood in the DM flight path. At times the planes are so loud that you cannot in your house and we have replaced the windows with double pane. They were not this loud 20 years ago. Sometimes are worse than others. I have been awaken at night by the flights (I mean midnight) I do not want the F35s here. Snowbird planes are a problem. I am concerned about the pollution from the planes. You can see the fuel raining down. I am concerned about crashes. I know DM is important to our economy, but maybe we should look to what Chandler did with Williams AFB.
164For us to feel better
165Fractiousness
166Fragmentation of "Community" - relates to diversity
167Fragmented government
168From an outsider looking in I see Tucson very disfunctional for the business community.
169Funding is not the responsibility of our local community. But it is what I think most needs improvement. We no longer adequately fund education in Arizona. Without proper funding, we will not keep the caring, interesting, productive people who make Tucson a good place to live. Our children will grow up and move away. We will have job market and no sustainable, healthy growth. Personally, I want to be able to honestly tell people with children that they should move here or stay here and put their children in public school. There are lots of very capable professional educators offering a variety of successful teaching methods and curriculums, but without basic resources, they can't do their jobs successfully. This matters to me as I see people I care about and/or respect leave Tucson or not come to Tucson because of this problem.
170Gains self-value; like they are part of something, respect for self
171Get cyclists along the road to realize they are a bicycle and not master of the asphalt domain
172Get rid of groups like this one
173Get rid of the progresives
174Get the bigots out of Phoenix.
175Gives a negative connotation to immigrants
176Good city council, but angry, argumentative people on the sidelines - definitely a minority, but a loud one
177Good infrastructure is important for public safety, economic development, respect and feeling for the community, and public activities.
178Good ol boy political infighting - lack of unified vision
179Good schools are the backbone of a good community. I send my children to private school which is very difficult for me financially and does not allow us to have the neighborhood/school connection. I don't have faith in our schools.
180Governance, politics, parochialism
181Government appears too corrupt and not concerned with the publics point of view.
182Government divisions and power struggles
183Government is not responsive to people/existing neighborhoods
184Government reacts to demands of high profile residents, regardless of what research and planning recommend. Half of failures like Rio Nuevo came from reversing direction in response to such demands. Come up with a plan, stick with it, make it work.
185Government, people, culture, planning are fragmented
186Greater awareness of age discrimination ...
187Greater recognition of GVCCCC/boundaries
188Greater respect among the various demographics
189Growing anti-immigrant sentiments
190Growing intolerance of Latino community members
191Growing lack of ownership that seems to come with population growth
192Growth is critical to the long term sustainability of our area. Our current city and county leadership is largely anti-gorwth.
193Harms our city's diversity - fear tinged rhetoric is like acid
194Hate is destructive of community values and undermines a healthy diversity. I work to develop neighborhood ties as a volunteer
195Hatred
196Have spent lots of time in places where there was no respect for the needs of future generations
197Highways divide communities, create air pollution and traffic. highways make things seem far away and are intimidating for certain drivers.
198Historically stupid decisions
199How disconnected the communities/areas are around Tucson
200How media - local news on TV reports - very negative. Promotes hatred
201I The views of the mountains, the desert landscape, and even the landscaping of people's homes shows respect for the desert environment, such as an emphasis on water conservation for example.
202I am a progressive, live in a progressive and enlightened Tucson and find it astounding that we must be dragged down by ignorance, greed, destructiveness and hostility breeded in our State by arch conservatives.
203I am anglo, but I am so saddened by what Arizona is becoming and deeply concerned it will have an outsized impact on Tucson.
204I am appalled at the hatred and denigration of people who migrate here from other countries simply because they need to work. These anti-immigrant attitudes don't originate in Tucson, but there are many here who are intolerant and mean-spirited toward immigrants, even those who are here legally. This is ugly, and not something to be proud of in our community.
205I am increasingly disturbed by the vandalism and threats directed toward duly elected congressional Representatives and other elected officials - I support Sheriff Dupnik's voiced concerns
206I am terrified whenever I see a person with a holstered gun in public. What if it went off accidentally in public? What if someone else grabbed it? What if the person had no training and could not control his temper? What if he used it in a bogus self-defense situation? We need to de-normalize gun ownership. There are too many kids killed by their parents' guns.
207I am tired of living in an uncivil, violent world
208I associate quiet with privacy, 'the right most prized by civilized men' Cardozo
209I believe neighborhoods have too much power over local politics. Many good projects have been scuttled because of some opposition by local neighborhoods,. Progress has to start somewhere. if a few local people oppose a development or project that could have significant long term benefit for the city as a whole it shouldn't get stopped because of a few sentimental people not wanting to see change in their backyard
210I do not feel safe in this city, or in my neighborhood. Lack of police and other safety enforcement is a huge problem. Transportation systems are dangerous. I have had my residence broken into many times and often officers do not respond to the call until hours, or even days, after the incident. I have had friends who were students innocently shot as passers by. I have had friends be mugged, raped, or threatened by strangers. Yet I recently had an officer spend 40 minutes issuing me a speeding ticket for going 4 miles over the speed limit. There is little rational in the justice system and its financial distribution in this city. I do not feel that I will continue my residence here much longer if the city safety is not improved.
211I do not want to live in a communist state
212I don't like this part of the political atmosphere, and hope it doesn't get worse.
213I feel in Tucson but also nationally that there is too much us and them and so nothing ever changes about the way things are run so everything stays the same. There seems to be no accountability
214I feel like Tucson is more reasonable than other places in the state in balancing care about citizens, fiscal issues & political agendas. The legislature is so extreme right now--so mean to people in their political zealotry--that the Tucson area is really the only place that I could live in this state. The focus on civility and kindness since the January shootings is very imp. to me. Let's use that event to bring hope to the state, the country & the world. Tucson's openess to different ideas & different kinds of people, esp. the LGBT community & communities of color, is crucial to my continued residence here. I also really like Tucson's laid back style & dress.
215I feel that Tucson could be much better if it only recognized how fine it is. For example, if it could free itself of its negativity, it could develop programs for improving the lives of those who live in poverty. (I have specific ideas here.) It could make us feel better about ourselves and the wonderful place in which we live.
216I feel the too many citisens of Tucson have very closed minds when it comes to people of different backrounds, races, religion, sexual orientation, education level, language etc.
217I feel there is corruption and collision among both city and county governments in maintaining the status quo and sweeping bad situations under the rug instead of confronting them
218I grew up in a pretty monolistic town--I truly appreciate being in a place where people's cultures, family, traditions, passions, talents are celebrated--not judged, condemned or ignored. Tucson is a celebration place--and I love that!
219I hail from the midwest. Everyone back there would converse with each other whenever the opportunity presented itself. I rarely see that happen, except when I run into someone else who comes from 'the midwest'. Community members would be more likely to feel close knit and help out if there was a better sense of community show outwardly.
220I have been here 41 years, and our local governments are not lean and mean, too much waste, too many politicians ill-prepared for managing government, etc.
221I have found that Tucson is happy to welcome RETIRED Seniors, but does NOT want to HIRE Senior workers. I had a HORRIBLE experience with the U of A when I first got here and applied for a clerical position. I am SURE it was age discrimination. I've also applied for 40 clerical jobs in the last 5 years, only been interviewed 4 or 5 times, and never offered a position. I'm LUCKY to have my current clerical job, as I was hired by a person who is no longer here, but who hired me because she thought we would work well together. God Bless Her!
222I have lived here for 30 years and we're still fighting about the same issues today as we were back then. We need true leaders in our community. It's time to vote in people that want the best for our entire region, not just their neighborhood interests. We need visionaries from the public, private, and educational sectors.
223I have never been in a place where more uneducated people feel more entitled to their opinions. And our politicians listen to whomever is loudest, as opposed to listening to reason.
224I have struggled to demonstrate that diversity is our greatest asset, not a liability, but the political pressures to divide our people are very hard to overcome.
225I have witnessed too much 'it's all about me' from retirees, youth, the wealthy, and entrenched and 'entitled' residents. this is a democracy and should not cater to myopic neighborhood interests.
226I just think people are not as friendly here as they were in Texas. It is too 'all my own'.
227I know many small businessmen and women and to a person they tell me that they have had loads of problems with the city government. I, myself, am a small business person and I have as well.
228I know we are a red state but I really wish we were blue. Tucson used to be such a nice place that I would have listed community as my #2 favorite thing until racism, stupidity, and guns, took over the state. Sheriff Dupnick is correct.
229I like feeling respected.
230I like living close to people from other areas, mexico's influence, the food, the discussions, the tolerance of differences
231I like that residents of Tucson respect and celebrate differences in various cultures
232I like to use public lands. I like being able to drive to beautiful places in public lands. I like that I don't have to pretend to like SKA music and Indie bands. People here are proud and respectful, for the most part.
233I regret the hostility and scapegoating of any group and am angry with all the bias. We need a fair and good immigration plan. We es- pecially must give a way for yooung people to find a path to citizenship.
234I see lack in unity
235I think State and local politics are divisive and promote anger within the community. Differing points of view are not discussed - just derided.
236I think he is the one most negative voice we have in Tucson. I hate having to name one person, but sometimes one thing can make a difference. If he could at least change his format even just a little, so we could help the community grow rather than blame and hate each other.
237I think our elected officials are doing a great job by volunteering to serve the citizens of Tucson. But often times they seem stifled by party lines, media, policies and procedures. I trust them, if they plan something, then follow through dammit. You can't make every body happy all the time, but you're going to piss off more people if you are indecisive.
238I think that English should be more used and less time and efforts should be taken to put everything in Spanish.
239I think that Tucson is politically under-represented in the state legislature. Our state politics seem to be pushed by the wing-nuts and we as a community have to suffer with their decisions and neglect.
240I think that we should seceed from Maricopa county. Name of the new state? Gadsden.
241I think the local politics has to reduce involvement and let businesses be free to make thier venture thrive. Neighborhoods and HOAs have taken the region hostage and are preventing a thriving community for thier own personal preferences. NIMBY
242I want a more welcoming community for new comers. Get rid of the 'nimby' syndrome
243I want to live among businesses and people who respect and protect the environment in general and Tucson's natural world in specific.
244I want to live in a place where the population doesn't 'kill' the environment and everything in it; it's important to me to be a steward of the earth, to respect it and not scrape the desert to build ticky tacky houses that all look alike. This is what Phoenix did, and it's ugly, plus it overtaxes the water, sewer, electricity, etc.
245I want to make Tucson my permanent home; however, the ugly housing tracts that are approved, the unrestrained growth, the 'get it while the getting is good' mentality of taxing new housing starts contribute to a community that fundamentally lacks beauty and open spaces-two of the factors that attracted people to the region in the first place.
246I was born in New Orleans and grew up in a 'Cajun' French culture. The Tucson culture reflects one of a types of cultures that reflects the ways in which I grew up. Rich in customs an food, architecture and ways of life. Respect for nature and customs.
247I was raised and in turn raised my sons with a sense of community to care and be respectful with our neighbors
248I went to private school on a scholarship, and while I'm certainly not low-income, I was poor compared to most of my classmates. Still, my parents are educated and liberal, and they exposed me to lots of parts of Tucson. I can't stand the rich kids and their parents I went to school with, who say things like, 'OMG, I'm on 22nd Street! I'm so lost in the ghetto' or 'You went to South Tucson? What, you want to get shot?' or 'Why would you shop in a place where nobody even speaks English?'
249I will have to say that most of the people in Tucson are very nice but others just don't care about what they do and how they do it!
250I will mention now that I actually hate living in Tucson and think the people are mostly hostile, however the University of Arizona is an acceptable place to go to college.
251I would build a wall between the US and Mexico
252I would like to see real planning for the future that respects quality of life in established neighborhoods & respects historic preservation
253I would love to see more pride and creativity in new architecture, more murals, public music, and any other ways which people can express themselves. This leads to more respect for other cultures and pride in the city itself.
254I would succeed from Arizona and become our own state. ;)
255I'm just really sick of stupid AZ politics and that Tucson really doesn't seem to have a say.
256I'm saddened and disappointed at the state's efforts to legislate SB 1070, shut down the TUSD Hispanic Studies Program and limit 14th Amendment citizenship rights.
257I'm tired of the Grijalva political machine, that works tirelessly against open political participation. King-makers don't support community success, just personal success. Thanks Grijalva for 'Boycott Arizona'- wasn't that helpful for all the people in financial distress/disaster.
258I've been here 50 years. The relationship with Phoenix has worsened every year. That's counter productive.
259Ideologies against diversity. This is an issue present in many matters. Minority groups
260If people wanted to go downtown all those businesses would never have left. Now instead of spending the money to improve bus service we're going to overspend to build the stupid streetcar which will carry a handful of white people when the buses provide service for the communities of color
261If we continue on the path of negative reporting we create a negative living community
262If we had a big vision, it might make it easier for people to see how their individual needs and wants could fit into the vision, rather than breaking/dividing people into warring factions.
263Illegal Immigrants
264Immigration laws need to be fair, just, and bring income
265Impact on quality of life and economic progress due to ignorance of complex of issues; weak educational backgrounds and business experience; focus on divisive issues; inability to compromise; dishonesty
266Important to live aorund people you like and respect
267Improve the nature of the dialogue
268Improve tolerance for others (gays, hispanics etc)
269In a time when multiculturalism and tolerance are being assaulted by many state officials, Tucson remains a haven for respecting the differences of others and treating all people with respect.
270In small groups people may have more respectful exchanges. When you are working and face-to-face, it facilitates this respectfulness
271In the last 10 years DM has shown no respect for the people living in mid-town, businesses and the UofA by flying low level flights across the city at all hours. These flights are very disruptive to university classes, damages older homes, and damages the quaitly of life for those in the flight path
272In too many cases selfish neighborhoods get their way, interfering with the greater good. Again, in wonderful time, maybe this is OK. Not now. Too many problems to let a small minority hold us back.
273In-classroom spending low - showing kids we don't value education; makes businesses not want to come here (affects economy)
274Inability for the community to say Yes to big projects too parochial
275Inability of residents to work together - to listen to other viewpoints
276Incivility in civil discourse, especially through email and the internet
277Increase attitude of tolerance (all people, towards each other's differences)
278Increase central Tucson density/disempowere obstructive neighborhood associations
279Individual vested interests are hurting the community, but the RTA and PAG hold promise
280Influence of small vocal groups
281Inner circles and siloed cliques control what happens here. The same people do the same things with and for the same people, expecting the same quid pro quos from those in their circles, yet wem expect different results. Why can Phoenix, Austin, Portland, etc. manage to create a lively city center, for example, yet we can't? I was born and raised here and can't figure it out.
282Intolerance
283Isolated uncommunicating groups
284Isolation of individual interest groups - individual vs. community
285It bothers me that people are segregated geographically based on socioeconomic background. In general, the poorer communities have less access to healthy foods, good schools, and have neighborhoods that are filled with businesses that hurt their situations even more (i.e. check cashing and payday loan businesses).
286It breaks my heart to see the endless discrimination (referendums to prevent Spanish from being spoken, SB 1070, poor funding to schools in hispanic areas).
287It displays that Tucsonans are valued.
288It escalates our politics to the national headlines in an unflattering way. We look extreme and uncaring.
289It has been politically correct to speak of 'tolerance' for decades now but we have seemed to have forgotten that we should expect no more from others than we render to others. It seems the new norm is to expect more of others than we expect of ourselves.
290It impacts our ability to be a progressive city
291It is completely counter to #1 above
292It is frustrating to hear political views that tend to skew left described as 'socialist' and trying to take rights away from Americans. This kind of sensationalism is bad for city morale; and totally false. It encourages people to think in extremes rather than rationally.
293It is sad to pathetic how Tucson keeps separate from the rest of AZ. There are unique aspects of Tucson, but same can be said of many places in AZ. So AZ refuses to go to PHX- where the rest of the state has come together.
294It is said that Tucson has the second highest crime rate per capita in the United States. I believe foundational to that claim is the drug sub culture which is fed by the Mexican Cartel lust for money and American user lust for drugs. This is a problem that is growing year by year that needs to be seriously addressed by Tucson as a community.
295It is unlikely that my kids will be able to find meainingful work in Tucson after graduating from college. This is a travesty. The result of a corrupt city charter is that the city government and general debate is held captive to extreme special intrest groups the majority of whom seem to favor plocies that are anathema to a healthy economy. I travel extensively and Tucson is an embarrasment.
296It is very clear who runs Tucson and who they care about. It is not the true natives of the Arizona region (Native American or Mexican). That is sad.
297It is very common to hear racial slurs directed at people of Lation and Caucasian origin. It's horrible, and need to stop!
298It is very hard to get from the west to the east side of Tucson. A better travel system would reduce pollution, reduce travel time, reduce road rage, etc...
299It makes us stretch our minds, to embrace difference, to move outside ourselves...I think of the McKale memorial after the January shootings...I have never been so proud to be a Tucsonan
300It seems like we're our own worst enemy as a community and on a whole - everything is complain complain complain. We need something positive to rally around as a community. Something to look forward to and reminds us of how great Tucson really is.
301It seems that many people don't know what's happening in the community and they don't care--as they make little effort to learn.
302It seems to me that with all the crazy laws and regulations, the city government really doesn't want small businesses to thrive. They are looking out for the interests of the big boxes. That is not the spirit of the people of Tucson.
303It separated people, separates community
304It takes only a few vocal individuals to halt progress and development. Politicians will not take a leadership role in doing what is best for the overall community when they believe it will cost them votes.
305It's a little publicized fact that the two closest stations to the Gabby Giffords shooting were never dispatched because it was another department's jurisdiction. Ego's and fire dept politics prevented paramedics who were 2 minutes from the scene to never be called. If 18 people laying dead and wounded in parking lot could not overcome fire department turf wars, this community will never be served appropriately like other communities who send the closest units regardless of jursidiction.
306It's a matter of "me" or "us" mentality
307It's embarrasing to see how poorly we compare to Phoenix.
308It's hard to work with youth when they dont feel like they have a future
309It's just rude (see related comment on ecosystem)
310It's not pockets - it's most of Tucson
311It's really hard to get positive news in the media
312It's related to size - the largeness and the divisiveness. We need to have people connect more
313Its diverse people and tolerance of diversity
314Judging people based on their appearance and backgrounds
315Kick out all the grumps
316Kind, respectful communication be kind
317Knee-jerk reaction to demands of high profile residents
318Lack of UofA community connectedness
319Lack of appreciation of universality and diversity can lead to war and violence
320Lack of community connectedness causes health problems and can result in a reduced level of public safety for all of us
321Lack of cultural exchange
322Lack of healthy education can contribute of deepen prejudices, health challenges, and connections to others
323Lack of inclusive social contract
324Lack of interest in community
325Lack of neighborhood ownership in some areas - disconnection/isolation
326Lack of respect for history
327Lack of understanding, intolerance
328Lack of willingness for the public to get involved beyond their home
329Language Barrier.
330Learn to come back to a more respectful debate.
331Less competition, more collaberation
332Less conflict among groups with differing political viewpoints
333Less political tension/partisan politics
334Less small special interest groups with power
335Less violence
336Less wrangling about who does "green" better. Let's work together!
337Lessens divisiveness
338Like a little space (2.5 lots) fruit trees, workshop, etc; don't want to have to drive to a community garden; space to play; no respect for established neighborhoods
339Living in a community where people know, respect, and care about each other is a great feeling.
340Long before our tragedy in Tucson, I was disgusted with the polarization of political discourse.
341Loose the hyper extremist environmentalist mindset.
342Lots of fighting and not lots of discussion
343Lots of racist policy and rhetoric out there
344Make people more responsible for their actions - no tolerance, do the time for the crime, more communtiy service options!
345Make public education a draw rather than a negative
346Many good or important projects are shot down by unwillingness of neighborhood groups to work with government
347Many neighborhoods near downtown and the university are experiencing the encroachment of development for student housing, specifically 'minidorms,' much to the detriment of the neighborhoods and values of houses proximate to the new development. These are clearly not 'single-family' housing.
348Many people have come or been brought in from outside Tucson to key positions to save us from ourselves. Valuing and respecting local knowledge and experience is neede
349Many students have not taken part in the political process
350Many voter approved transportation projects aren't supported by the Council
351Me, me, me attitude everyone feels things are bad unless their specific niche issues are resolved.
352Migrant treatment
353Mini-dorms in R-1 are unsafe, not neighborhood friendly and in the long run not good for the University community
354More acceptance of differing perspectives (less in-fighting)
355More autonomy by smaller jurisdictions, realization of their value to the regions
356More embracing of hispanic/native heritage
357More people embracing our unique cultural diversity and celebrating it
358More regional visioning less NUMBYism
359More respect and appreciation for good deeds
360More respect for diversity
361More respect for local ideas/knowledge vs. outside experts
362More respect for our history
363More respect for the authorities
364More respect for the historic areas and buildings of the city.
365More than anything I want my children to grow up to be accepted and valued no matter their strengths and beliefs and I want them to accept and value others.
366More tolerance of our neighbors to the south, in particular abolishment of SB1070 and support of continued ethnic studies in our schools
367Most Tucson residents are kind, respectful of others, family oriented, seek to be educated and realize the value of the area for its beauty and contribution to good health.
368Most of the governed are not active or trusting in the US government. I would like to make it mandatory for students in public schools to learn and recite, or at least stand and respect, the Pledge of Allegiance each day.
369Most of us want the same things - to help others be the best they can be- Many Liberals have no faith that the community can accomplish this better than the government.
370Most people who make laws do not realize the impact it makes on others
371Multiculturalism and all inclusiveness is valued
372Multiculturalism and tolerance
373My Tucson is respectful of everyone.
374My children attended TUSD schools. My oldest was, thankfully, in part-time GATE programs through middle school. Because of the bullying he received at a white kid at the hands of hispanics I chose NOT to send him to Tucson High. Spending the money on Salpointe was the best thing I could have done. I only kept my youngest in TUSD because he was in fully-contained GATE through University High School. If I hadn't had GATE options my children would have been in private schools. The campuses are eroding. The lack of respect between the students is increasing. The quality of education is eroding. I had a principal tell me my son didn't need to learn to spell because we have 'spell-checker' software. Really? I was appalled. I made sure I was at the TUSD schools once a week so I could keep an eye on what was happening. Much waste. Too many bad teachers who were protected. Too many good teachers and staff who were over-worked. Too many parents who didn't care. The boards over the years hasn't done much to help the situation. I think TUSD needs a complete overhaul, including it's negotiations with the teachers union.
375My community does not seem to want to get involved in public hearings/decision-making, yet after the decisions are made they complain. They blindly follow what they are told with very little effort at research on their part.
376My family came to settle here in 1910. A few years back a group of anglos yelled at me on camera MEXICAN GO HOME!! The police chief at the time was my cousin!!!!
377My mother is an immigrant and our country really is better because of our rich history of diversity. We can figure this out if we stop fighting and do what is good for people, families, business and national security.
378My word! Where did these nasty people come from?! Disagree, but take your hatefulness, racism and other prejudices elsewhere. We need to fund education, support all diversity, support the arts and culture.
379NIMBY
380NIMBY!!!
381Need a better- more positive conduit for information- less negativity allowed
382Negative tone of public discourse
383Negatively affects other areas
384Negativity
385Negativity Culture
386Neighborhoods and municipalities fighting their own turf wars - no cooperation or regional vision
387Nibbyism
388Nicer people while driving
389No interest in getting together
390No racism
391No sense of one community
392No shared vision: Hispanic/Anglo, Tucson/South Tucson (no overarching elements)
393Nobody wants to own Tucson
394Not seeing each other and interacting face-to-face results in isolation - we only communicate via devices (text, email, etc.) these days
395On Nov 2, police cried that if the tax wasn't passed we'd be losing officers. On Nov 3, suddenly no officers were being laid off- did something radical change in those 12 hours? I feel deceived and probably won't vote in support of City initiatives again for years.
396On public transportation, unkind behavior witnessed sometimes threats, scary for kids. Drug deals.
397Other than the UA campus itself, in my opinion the 'northwest area' (i.e. Marana, Oro Valley, etc.) is the only nice part of this region. While Tucson and most of Pima County are sinking and look like a war zone, these areas seem to actually take care of their communities and look like they are run by people who know what they're doing.
398Our current reputation and government enviornment is very unfriendly to business and job creation in the private sector.
399Our economy is crashing, and poor people feel this the hardest. People who used to be middle class are now poor. Meanwhile the rich get away with murdering our economy. We have to return to fairness!
400Our local media has become a mouthpiece for business interests and not the community
401Parochial way of thinking/turf battles
402People
403People - politicians in Phoenix are trying to place a stigma on people of color - Tucson is not buying into that!
404People are not marginalized when differences are appreciated and celebrated
405People can't live on one side of town and commute to the other - we end up with a lack of diversity and increased segregation
406People complain about students. Tucson would not be much of a town without UofA and students.
407People feel so entitled sometimes. They act like they are the only ones who are important. It's really the red light running that is a problem.
408People here aren't as friendly as in the midwest
409People here have a tendency to be very closed off and unfriendly. It is not easy to become part of an established group, as most groups here tend to be 'closed' - even ones that taut themselves as 'progressive.'
410People in Tucson are aware of the importance and beuty of natural resourecs and landscape. Our desert is beautiful and as a whole we try to protect and respect it. Our buildings blend with the desert colors and shapes.
411People judge the heart and vision of a city by the downtown experience. If there is a sense of pride downtown, there is a sense of pride about the city as a whole. People will treat Tucson with the level of respect they see being demonstrated in the development of downtown.
412People make lots of money off of UofA students and then call the police for every little thing. Tucson City Code, Section 13-32, unruly gathering of more than 6 persons. Many landlords rent to more than 6 students, putting tenants in violation just by renting. Complaints can be made anonymously and student tenants have very little recourse.
413People should love, understand, and care for each other
414People's tempers
415Perceived lack of communication between leaders and followers
416Perception of the division of the city (Southside, etc.)
417Pima Co. accounts for more criminal activity than neighboring counties because we have a sheriff who would rather focus on politics than criminal activity. Our mayor is clueless, weak and lazy - effectively oblivious to the failure he has facilitated in Tucson. Furthermore, any city government that considers Isabel Garcia's actions against Sheriff Joe in 2008 (in which she led youth to beat a pinata in effigy & decapitate it - inciting violence against the sheriff) at all acceptable or legitimate needs to be ousted! There is no room for such vitriolic dialogue and hideous, hate-filled actions from a city worker against a state official. Absolutely indefensible!
418Pockets of apathy
419Pockets of apathy (example: elementary school)
420Pockets of culture. It doesn't embrace everyone in Tucson. We need to be more intermingled
421Polarization of political views.
422Polarized politics
423Polarized; extremes; lack of leadership and people willing to put up with crazy Tea Baggers.
424Police reaction to UofA students
425Political climate to be less volatile
426Political conflict and lack of cooperation for the greater good
427Politics *State * Local factionalism
428Politics - too divisive/partisan
429Poor planning, lack of foresight, wasteful use of funds, poorly run and outdated systems, rigid and out of date development regulations. Fresh ideas take forever to get agreement and even longer to move forward (Rio Nuevo is the perfect example of this). The city only gives attention to the people with the most money and approves things that are often not in our best interest as a community. We have run off really great talent over the years because of this. Our public school system is a disgrace.
430Poorly maintained properties with a preponderance of junk and refuse devalue neighborhoods, contribute to vermin, vandalism, and crime. Represent a lack of pride and respect.
431Poverty and division between haves and have nots very little mixing between
432Poverty and the resulting hunger, violence and depression brings everyone and everything down.
433Preserving older architecture preserves our history
434Pride focuses on what's good- leads to expansion rather than conflict
435Promotes hatred and fear, holds us back as a city state, and country
436Promotes segregation
437Provincial attitudes
438Provincialism
439Public discussion on the immigration issue is filled with rancor, disrespect and lack of understanding of the demographic reality in our community and how tied we are to immigration. These attitudes are racist in nature and do not reflect the true spirit and diversity in our community. I want to live in a community where policy is informed by fact and people are treated with dignity and respect.
440Quit bickering and do something! I love downtown and go often....but it could be so GREAT!
441Racisim
442Racism
443Racism has divided the community
444Racism is alive and well in Arizona on many levels including ethnic, social and economic. The push is not for agreement but to accept differences in views and values with emphasis on respect for all.
445Racism/discrimination
446Raul Grijalva should RESIGN! Instead of looking at the impact a facility like that could have had on our entire community. He pushed to serve his district that did not reciprocate the support; no restaurants, entertainment or any other facilities to support the community investment.
447Really Tucson lacks an inner beauty, has high business and anti-business attitudes in government.
448Recent increased negative rhetoric by some politicians
449Recently, our community has often showed that there are small pockets of hatred that often spurs crime. I would like the hatred and crime to disappear.
450Refusal to cooperate, short-sightedness, ignorance inhibit the formation and effectiveness of community
451Regional identity important, but smaller is better (local voice)- not to be swallowed up
452Regional planning requires removal of bounty-lines.
453Religion does not unite people, it divides them.
454Remove it from the state ofArizona. Just kidding but it is embarrassing sometimes to say you are from Arizona with Jan Brewer, SB 1070 and etc.
455Remove much of the border influence.
456Removing partisan politics may help with election qualified candidates. This Dem/Rep divide is hurting us and is unnecessary on a local level.
457Residents are very polite and show respect amongst one another
458Residents don't feel they have a voice - need to educate residents/H.S students to get involved and feel empowered
459Resist ethnophobic activities (ignorance)
460Respect everyone's opinion
461Respect for enviroment and healthy lifestyle
462Respect for planning
463Respect for the UA
464Respect for the desert environment
465Respect the rights of native populations to live and work here.
466Respect/support for K-12 and higher education
467Respect/support for cultural diversity
468Right now the elected leaders have no vision for the future of the community. The wrangling over downtown development and the waste of taxpayer dollars tells me there is no one in charge. They all have their fiefdom and will do nearly all to protect same
469Road rage
470Rough on the edges, messy violent, ungodly, apathetic rough on each other
471Rudeness
472SB1070 discourages diversity, increases racial profiling
473SB1070 is about getting rid of an entire people
474SB1070, HB2281, english only, teachers with accents, hate speach, etc. I'm scare for my safety.
475Safety, respect and kindness are values that the whole world should live by- we can be the leaders.
476Secular attitudes
477Seems to lead to bigotry
478Segregation of areas
479Sense of individualism works against working together
480Sense of place in Tucson is declining while sense of place in Vail is increasing
481Shortsighted, lack of common goals, petty bickering, poorly qualified,
482Should be more tolerance of ethnic and cultural differences
483Show more respect for our heritage
484Shows respect for the community
485Shut-door churches: where do people go when in need
486Signifies indifference and lack of respect for self and others
487Small town feel rusty, dusty cowboy town parochial
488Small town mentality when it comes to municipal government and infrastructure
489Small town thinking
490So that everyone can have better opportunities
491Social and physical stratification
492Something about students they aren't engaged like they used to be
493Sometimes less NIMBY
494Somewhat isolationist attitudes that "my neighborhood or area of town is best" and should get all of the benefits and monetary support from government agencies
495South Side vs. Marana vs. East Side
496Southern Arizona state representation is a sad reflection of the extreme. They need to go.
497Speak out against people who spread hatred in this town
498Start with discrimination
499Stereo typing (ex. "something happened on the south side") of areas of Tucson
500Stop being a welfare city/area. All it does is discourage learning English and failure to blend into American society.
501Stop the bickering
502Stop the bickering and let's create a cohesive community based water resource service plan that allows local governments to cooperate with each other on this issue and plan growth together.
503Stop the blaming and vitriolic in-fighting among people.
504Stop the discrimination and targeting of Hispanics and the gay community.
505Stop the hate and intolerance trickling in from Phoenix, putting a stop to hate radio like 104.1 'the truth'
506Stop the racism and crime
507Stop the racist antagonism and prejudice.
508Students act out if their attention isn't captured in a creative and interesting way
509Students are not real neighborhood stakeholders
510Students don't see a role for themselves in the community
511Support of military and negativity from a small vociferous group against the military
512TV and news agencys are dishonest, and seam to enjoy discurageing us. They need to be more incurageing.
513Take Jon justice off the radio
514Teachers think "oh well," there is teacher burnout, settling for low standards
515Thank god for Southern and Northern Arizona (they give some balance to that wasteland in the middle of the state)
516The Arizona State Legislature has become self-centered and intent on hurting public education and people who have so little. I would like to see a more positive, problem solving legislature.
517The Arizona negative stereotype in terms of inclusiveness (boycotting AZ products for example)
518The City/County government seems to work at odds as opposed to in alignment. All of us are impacted by City government, yet have no vote if we live outside of the City boundaries. A rational boundary to focus on urban/rural needs would assist in voices being heard.
519The County is suppose to support the entire County, whether municipalized or unincorporated. Represent and facilitate cooperative relationships with the local governments and the unicorporated areas.
520The Racism
521The Rio Nuevo disaster infuriates me. I bought a house downtown 11 years ago and am still waiting for light rail, condos, streetscaping. The government handling of Rio Nuevo funds was criminal. Like a kid in a candy shop, all used up on studies and consultants.
522The State of Arizona legislature does not work together as a a unit rather than party against party. The political attitude keeps businesses from located in our state.
523The U of A is a gret anchor for our city. It is a great example of solid public education.
524The UA is the single most important factor in our region's economy, yet nobody at the local government level seems to pay it much attention. When was the last time you even heard Mayor Walkup mention the UA in one of his speeches? They are taking this jewel for granted and it will come back to haunt them later.
525The University of Arizona is a treasure. It has contributed to the immense intellectual and spiritual base of the Tucson attitude: respect for all cultures, art and theatre and music for all interests
526The anti growth attitude
527The attitude of business people that residents are their enemies.
528The bus makes me nervous; but I don't take them. I think of it as something of a rolling detox
529The city charter fosters a level of corruption that I speculate is second only Chicago. The structure and corruption have prevented affluent areas of the region to choose not to be incorporated.
530The city governing body, since I have been here in 1971, has been inconsistent and unreliable in it's decision making. Laws and policies are adopted in a 'feel-good' atmosphere and then allowed to gather dust or go uninforced. There is little political will to get any thing done, especially if it becomes controversial. Too many parochial positions by the elected officials.
531The community is comparmentalized
532The community is extremely divided politically and socially making it very personal for people.
533The core value of inclusivity and respect
534The county basically doesn't impact major decisions - as a voter, I resent that a small handfull of people are making decisions about growth. We have duplicate systems that don't coordinate or even appear to talk with each other. We have replicated functions which are difficult to even find in some cases. Our school systems don't EVEN coordinate calendars, and there is a true disregard for education on so many levels.
535The current business climate (not the recession) is weighted too far toward environmentalists/neighborhoods and is unfriendly toward business/economic development.
536The demonization of the Mexican people needs to stop at all levels.
537The discrimination in certain jobs
538The downtown area has so much potential and it would be so wonderful to recapture it as a vibrant city center. Although some progress has been made, it sometimes feel as though short sightedness will prevent it from ever happening. I am hopeful that the streetcar will improve things, but at times I just feel worn down by naysayers.
539The force against/for development.
540The heart of Tucson is its downtown area. I have been saddened to see the waste and inefficient use of the funds allocated to the Rio Nuevo. It's tragic when leaders cannot work together for the common good. Often I attend events and volunteer in the downtown area.
541The history and land of the Southwest has joined to create a community that best reflects my values, creativity and temperament. It is very important to me that mix of human cultures and ecological ensemble evolve together in a respectful, productive, and individually enriching way.
542The lack of coordination between major functions: school, gov't, disencnfranchised & disconnected infrastructure.
543The lack of pride in our community shows with dilapidated properties, trash everywhere, graffiti, and rudeness.
544The last round of elections made me feel ill. Regardless of our personal political opinions. We need to learn how to be nice to each other and respectful, even if we disagree.
545The legal view of a history of drug use is hard to understand. What is different now?
546The local media never gets the facts straight and is too soft on investigative inquiry. That is part of being a small community- they don't want to make waves and alienate themselves from getting the next big story. So, they act tough but put on the kid gloves.
547The mix of cultures enhances a region's tolerance for differing ethnicities and histories and educates the populace. In an hour one can be in a canadian forest zone or in high chapparal and grass land.
548The negative publicity
549The negative, parochial, head in the sand attitude about any proposed change
550The poor quality of development, new and old, is repellent and depressing
551The public perception of our public schools is very negative. Public neighborhood schools are an important factor in community cohesiveness and civic involvement. We treat our public education poorly and it is reflected in low student achievement and lack of community cohesivness
552The racism needs to stop no matter what color you are or language you speak
553The racism, teach the children that men and women are equal
554The recent occurance of the shooting.
555The residential neighborhoods of midtown Tucson are plagued with the noise of aircraft from Davis-Monthan as well as from the 162nd Fighter Wing. While D-M is crucial to America's defense and Tucson's economy, the city and the Air Force should work together to ensure the midtown residential neighborhoods are more livable.
556The sense of community and respect for history
557The small but increasing amount of hate speech
558The small town feel and the respect for the desert around us.
559The state does not invest in education - many people are unaware of issues. an uneducated population creates problems. many tucsonans are apathetic and do not get involved. government is run by special interests.
560The tale of two cities
561The unprincipled leadership of the Arizona Daily Star is nothing short of shameful. There is no excuse for any media to endorse a sitting Congressman who drove business/revenue away from our state and community with his call for a boycott because of SB1070. Businesses were hurt and some closed, let alone the number of people who lost their jobs. As to our image, whether SB1070 and/or a border fence is the right cause or not, I have yet to see ONE suggestion of how our illegal immigration issue can be sovled from those who oppose those options. We are a national 'punch line' and we need to do something positive about that - not just blame the other side.
562The youth gets overlooked sometimes in our busy lifestyle. They need to feel included and loved.
563There are 2 things that make Tucson unattractive for business. 1) no properly trained workforce, and 2) we have a vertical government that isn't on the same page
564There are far too many conservatives who want everything for themselves and their rich cronies without taking the full society (including poor) into account. Tucson has less of this and more sharing with all because of the liberal people living and participating here.
565There are lots of crappy ones
566There are many cultures that are important to the makeup of Tucson and each should be recognized.
567There are some very scary legislators in Phoenix. Two from my district: Al Melvin and Vic Williams (Terry Proud is also running and is as scary as Al Melvin!). When I moved to Arizona with my young family six years ago (our choice-not brought here by a job), I knew the politics would be more conservative. However, I did not know the politicians would be so psychotic, mean spirited, and doing their damndest to destroy public education and the economy of our state. This (along with the fact that Arizona is filled with citizens who would elect people like this) is the reason our family will be leaving Tucson and Arizona as soon as we are able to secure a job somewhere else... in spite of the beautiful weather and desert. My advice--never make a decision about where to relocate based upon the weather!
568There are too many areas of segregation. For example: one area is primarily industrialized, one area is neighborhood, one area is businesses. Often times, this mixed zoning leads to a further distance between destinations and leads to the need to drive a car rather than walk.
569There are too many people who allow their distrust of government to cause them to act out loudly and negatively.
570There are way too many barking dogs and hideous chain link fences to hold them.
571There has been a campaign by business people in our area to marginalize the residents there.
572There is a bit of a desperate, single outlook around Tucson.
573There is a divide - sometimes artificial - that separates similarly functioning/similarly minded government and nonprofit entities, and it uses more money and human energy than necessary to move certain processes along. Competition, especially fair competition, is good in business because it makes everyone work smarter; in government and nonprofit sectors, turf battles and empire-building are inappropriate if it doesn't actually make for better results. Efficient cooperation between jurisdictions, whether formal and approved by elected officials or just positive pooling of resources toward shared goals at the department/agency level, is better especially in lean times when sharing can make everyone's resources stretch further.
574There is a greater good to consider (ex: quality of schools can divide community)
575There is a sense of community in Tucson that was evidenced when Gabriel Giffords was shot. For the most part, the local politcal bickering is less posioness than certainly Phoenix and even the rest of the country. Oregon, particularly Portland, is my model for a sense of community and civility.
576There is a very distinct class distinction in Tucson and unfortunately racism also plays a role.
577There is no Tucson without protected open space desert preserves including the wildlife thereof. We are not interested in living in a place with all the same culture. Diversity, and respect of diverse thoughts, cultures, opinions and experiences are the cornerstone of Tucson. It is what attracted to the region, and what has kept us here for more than 25 years.
578There is no regional sense of community. The foothills and South Tucson don't seem to see themselves as living in the same region. As a result, we have a ballpark in South Tucson that sits empty, and a major mall in the foothills that generates no taxes for the thousands of people who shop there. If this region is to thrive, the needs of the region must be put before the desires of the neighborhoods.
579There is no regional vision. All jurisdictions seem to work independently and against each other on major issues
580There is no understanding between the far right and the left
581There is nowhere else like it on earth and we need to respect and protect it for future generations to come
582There is really no reason why people can't live together peacable
583There is resistance to growth/change. We need to allow it
584There is some division at River Rd in the north
585There is too much "I want," and not enough what we all want. We are divided into groups
586There is too much racism; not only in Tucson, but in the whole world
587There must be something wrong with the education in Tucson, because people are just plain indifferent. This town is full of rude people who do not acknowledge you even if they run into you they are the ones who give you a dirty look.
588There seems so much fighting or disagreement that nothing gets accomplished except to spend money and get nothing to show for it.
589There seems to be few links between the foothills, downtown, south tucson, the west side etc. It's important to be interconnected to really take broad community action for change
590There should be less influence of business in local government
591There's too much of 'me,' and not too much of 'us.'
592They need to treat us equally
593They offer NO leadership. They are corrupt!!! They are professional thieves!!! Two examples: Look at downtown Tucson!!! Also, millions of misappropriation of funds with Rio Nuevo. They are unfriendly to small business!
594They work to the detriment of the community as a whole and make us provincial
595Things like SB1070 pop up and impact our image
596This affects the majority of the people I associate with.
597This community recognizes and honors volunteers
598This irrational anti-firearm histeria leaves me cold. Over 161,000 Arizonans have concealed weapons permits without the 'blood in the streets' predicted by the antigun pundits.
599This, coupled with the fact that around here cars pull over for emergency vehicles, speaks volumes to me about just how much our community values mutual respect and politeness!
600Those with the loudest voice do not always represent the majority. They have held Tucson back from addressing bigger issues
601Time to act as one and stop Tucson, OV & Marana, and Pima County duplicating and/or competing on everything.
602Tired of old dusty white people trying to ruin everything
603Tired of the border discussions about illegal immigration & how bad it is for Arizona
604To live freely and enjoy (civil) rights
605To live with my family better
606Tolerance and diversity.
607Tolerance for immigrants
608Tolerance is vital for communities everywhere to live in peace, and Tucson is a microcosm of diversity and acceptance.
609Tolerance/acceptance of different cultures
610Tone down the nasty rhetoric in politics
611Too many bigots in our community, would rather have more open-mided people. Difference makes us stronger, much better than one way/one thought
612Too many community organizations not working in a collaborative manner. Great waste of resources with confused directions
613Too many license fees, inspectors, rejectors
614Too many show hostility and lack of tolerance for others, particularly as relates to border issues, immigration.
615Too much attack on personalities or accusations of not being enough of a Patriot. Too much emphasis on illegals.
616Too much divisiveness!
617Too much hate, teens in gangs
618Too much negative media
619Too much politics between jurisdictions. All are fighting over resources and tax base. Can't we all get along and follow a common vision?
620Tools to help identify and replace stereotypes and bias
621Traffic makes people angry and care leswsw about each other. We're never more selfish than when we're driving.
622Trash the "no" paradigm
623True visionary long-range thinking and planning has never been a Tucson asset since I have lived here. Too many decisions are short-term, and interest-driven...too few (if any) are foundational for decades-long success. Those in governmental positions of influence have not resisted the urge to appease the most vocal minority while leaving the tough, long-range dialogue and implementation to another day.
624Tucson City Council and Pima County Supervisors in general are people who have never met a payroll, and have no clue how real society works
625Tucson has a business culture which fosters a win/lose attitude in business transactions/relationships. It is difficult to make a living when the culture fosters beating the other side bloody.
626Tucson has a self-esteem problem. The default position when discussing public matters is to put down, be negative (e.g. the local newspaper.) This is at the core of community deteorioration and is self-perpetuating. Commit to focus on assets and not just deficits
627Tucson has a strong cultural identity one that tries to be inclusive and respectful of the many peoples who call Tucson home and attempts to celebrate culture in various forms. We are not always successful in expressing our cultural identity and we have sometime gotten things wrong but we keep trying. It's important to me because a strong cultural identity means that certain choices are going to be made and allows me to feel valued as I represent a diverse point of view.
628Tucson has been the target of new laws banning ethnic studies and national attention has been brought to border relations. A lot of negativity surrounds this issue
629Tucson has its moments, but like most of the country we seem divided, unsure of our future, where our common interests lie. There does not appear to be a lot of interest in voting - a lot of political apathy.
630Tucson has on of the most vicious, mean spirited political climates I have ever seen. Incestuous and seemingly locked into special interests.
631Tucson is a hateful place.
632Tucson is a place where people care about people, no matter who you are, what you do or where you come from. I want to live and be in a place where I can be comfortable, loved and respected for who I am AND be in a place where I can practice the same.
633Tucson is chock-full of cultural diversity, which brings with it different religions, races, languages, arts, food, clothing, and a better understanding of other countries. Multi-culturalism gives us all an opportunity to view life from different angles and through different lenses. When we open ourselves to this gracious opportunities, we human beings have a better chance for mutual understanding, respect and peace with each other.
634Tucson is unique in the diversity of its people, and the pervailing attitude of tolerance (live and let live)
635Tucson loosing its sense of place people moving to outer areas
636Tucson seems to be split on the area around the UofA and downtown and the rest of Tucson... Maybe it's just me and we do attend events downtown but it just doesn't have the same feel. There is something intangible about it that maybe I can't explain but it just feels disconnected. We like to attend the events downtown like 'meet yourself' and the TCC stuff and wish we had more things more often.
637Tucson would get honest about what works & what needs to be fixed.
638Tucson's number one problem has been the lack of affective communication among political parties. They continue to be so distructive with their issues that they tear the community apart. They act like angry children and go for the kill when others disagree. This breeds hate and causes those already mentally unstable to react in violent manners.
639Tucson, in my opinion, is racist and caters toward two cultures, and most of the time just one. Not enough open minds, not very diverse. Enough said.
640Tucsonans generally are engaged and care about what happens around them. The genuinely want to make Tucson a 'better' place to live in not just now but in the future.
641Uncontrolled growth is the result of the power of the special interests
642Unsightly and abusive of our planet and surrounding community. Disrespectful
643Upper class attitudes about South Tucson
644Very disconnected community, no sense of relationships
645Very negative, editorialized publication that does nothing to promote well being and public service. This paper is a blot on our existence and no body, not even there subscribers should take them serious.
646Very scary regulations from Phoenix coming down - for example carrying guns makes people afraid
647WIth density, we can have mass transit, walking spaces, storefront developments, and fun. Get out of our cars.
648WOW, what a horrible experience to have to go the dog pound. The stench is horrible, why don't we build the structure to be more like a barn with open air at the top (no one will be able to escape!) and the whole procees needs to be simplied to be people friendly.
649Water wars (drinking/effluent)
650We all experience the negative effects of disconnectedness
651We are blessed with a richly diverse population, but not everyone seems to value the differences. We need to take advantage of this opportunity rather than try to fit everyone into the same mold.
652We are competing within the region and developers are always looking for the sweetest deal
653We are not a community, rather a collection of interest groups. We are all stronger as a community.
654We are not fighting for every piece of real estate here in Tucson like in other places
655We are unable to see other solutions, we only want to see our own solutions to the problems
656We communicate to the rest of the country that border safety really is big problem which causes fear of our area, damagers our image, and affects the economy
657We don't know how to work as a team to improve the lives of all those who live and work here. Too many personel aggendas!!
658We don't need it it leads to same type of actions rather than compassionate understandings
659We have a bad case of NIMBYism - we need to learn to compromise
660We have a bi-cultural situation which is divided and Tucson will not advance until this division is overcome
661We have a wealth of talent and ability that continues to fail this community. People need to get over themselves and a lot of pettiness to work for a common good.
662We have been involved in Arizona athletics for over almost 7 years now. After being involved with Coach Candrea, I find Coach Stoops to be a very unprofessional, rude and embarrassing example to not only his players and staff but to the community as a whole.
663We have microcommunities (top 1%) - most of the community is apathetic, but it doesn't have to be that way
664We have no reliable source of information for our community that strengthens it. The Arizona Daily Star consistently undermines every effort at improvement and panders to the anger and ignorance of our population.
665We have too much conflict between the sectors of our community, public, private and social.
666We have top turn down jobs because we don't want to travel across town
667We have two forces trying to govern that seem to be opposing forces.
668We honor and celebrate our differences better than most other communities
669We in the midst of chaos...we are putting pressure and oppression on youth, people of color, immigrants and its stripping us of all that makes us great.
670We live here for access to the desert and the mountains. If Rosemont and other mines destroy those venues, why stay?
671We must live in the shadow of a wacko state government. Immigration is a wrong-headed word here, where we have historically lived in harmony with Mexico. That is changing for the worse.
672We need a synergistic plan that will serve the community..enhancement rather than doing things piece meal and creating disconnect with the environment and barriers to human growth and development
673We need to enjoy and take of our natural resources but we must stop worshiping them because it destroying our ability to grow and prosper.
674We need to stop attacks on immigrant families
675We respect historically-important communities (downtown barrios, Old Fort Lowell, etc.); we protect habitats; we can see the sky.
676We seem to have an 'eat your own' mentality. To much money going to too many conflicting organizations, all just fighting for the money. No solid plan and everyone out to protect their own interests. How many strategic plans do we need if we don't have the guts to do anything once we get them? Oh I know, let's visit Portland again!
677We seem to shoot down any suggested improvements (transportation, downtown, spring training, Rio Nuevo, re-structuring govt., new industry) instead of working together to forge compromises and solutions. It's almost like we can't trust each other or just like to say 'no'. Business and neighborhood interests really all want the same thing: jobs, quality of life, strong health and education systems. Nothing can improve without change, so let's all work together.
678We should avoid discrimination based on background or culture
679We should elect people who can make decisions. When a decision is unpopular then it is put on a ballot and campaigning is done to oppose it. If it is a valid need then it should be done.
680We should speak loudly with one voice in Southern Arizona regarding the border and the perceptions of fear
681We shouldn't let Maricopa County treat us like we are second class citizens, like we don't deserve our fair share of state revenues, like we don't deserve their respect. We should have a campaign to emphasize our strengths.
682We're all human, but we don't treat others as humans
683We've been held back by 'sides'. Everything is clear cut/black or white. If you're not part of this group/label/whatever, you must be my enemy. That mindset is really holding us back.
684Weary of divisiveness...Let's find a way to work together! Define some goals and relentlessly push toward them.
685What are the barriers to helping others? How do we get past the fear?
686When on fast streets, disconnected
687When the pie is small, people fight
688When the state stepped in mandating so called, 'state standards,' which reinforce rote memorization over true critical thinking and problem solving, the quality of our educational system rapidly declined in the region. Public education was meant to serve the needs of the local community. I want to see our communities demand their rightful control over the education of their children. We should allow teachers to motivate children through their natural curiosity, not through the threat of 'state testing.' Clearly, the latter has failed miserably, for it reflects a mentality of the 20th century, and fails to prepare our children for the challenges of the 21st century. This is personally important as I see more and more people finishing high school and being unable to think through basic problems. Forcing teachers to teaching to a test rather than to approach situations with rational thinking and problem solving strategies produce citizens who are inflexible, unimaginative, and ill-prepared to function successfully in a dynamic, ever-changing reality. I want my old age to be spent in a country of innovative thinkers, not in a nation of automatons unable to express themselves or creatively face new situations with a multiplicity of perspectives.
689Whether it's in traffic, in line at a store, or in many other settings, many people here seem grumpy and rude to each other much of the time. We seem to lack compassion for our common man. In other parts of the country, there seems to be more of a sense of community togetherness, as if they're all there to help each other. But here, I feel people have a western landgrab attitude in which if I don't get it, you will, so I'd better beat you to it.
690While we seem to respect and even value diversity within our community, we do not work well across differences. Until we learn to do this better we will not realize our full potential.
691Widespread Racism
692Will help us to respect others differnet from ourselves
693Willingness to be offensive (aggressive bumper stickers, etc.)
694With so much negativity around downtown and all of the missteps, it makes it impossible for the good to shine through. The small business community is also part of this problem, they harp on all of the negative and don't and can't contribute to the positive.
695Without quality education at all levels (and I am not just talking about passing measurement tests) there is no future here, and without great teachers, there can be no quality education. More respect, and better pay, for teachers would attract enthusiastic, creative and dynamic people to the field.
696Wouldn't want to live in a place where people don't respect each other
697You are not part of anything but the problem
