Imagine Greater Tucson 2010-11 Phase I Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to New business development and expansion |
| A good education system is important to companies relocating employees |
| A great start is the University moving some departments downtown. Our downtown is safer than many downtowns ..... we need to support the businesses we have and encourage many, many more. Provide safe transportation to the area. Maynards has the right idea. |
| A large part of Tucson's economy depends on the military and defense spending and those industries bring a lot of money into our economy which is good for Tucson. Also the military and aviation in general were here in and around Tucson for many years and it is an important part of life in Tucson (and important to the freedom of the Nation) and I feel like we must learn to not only live with it but be thankful for its presence. |
| A real effort to attract good business |
| A vibrant economy brings industry |
| A visionary leader (think Mayor Daley in Chicago) can put a town on his back - with the help of the town media - and move it forward. |
| Acceptance of tourism as a major part of our economy |
| Access to a world class research institution, and all of the rich educational opportunities it provides is priceless. The idea that the best astronomical telescopes in the world are made at 6th street & Cherry while Nasa probes to Mars are controlled from 6th avenue and Drachman makes me just gush with pride for my community. |
| Acknowledge and accept that southern Arizona produces 60-80% of the nation's copper and is one of the greatest copper districts in the world. Critical mineral deposits can only be mined where they occur. Society as we know it today could not exist without copper. |
| Airport. |
| Alllow more businesses to come in |
| Allow business more opportunity to relocate and grow in this town. Give the people more choices to spend their money and more options for better paying jobs. |
| Alternative transportation - more light rail, electric cars, platinum status as a cycling community. Lots of pedestrian space downtown, arts warehouse district full of artists, nurturing our successes in optics and other industries, being aggressive about bringing high paying jobs to town, supportive of arts and small businesses, green economies. |
| Any attempt to bring in progressive businesses and industry will fail without a strong public education component. Tucson has to fight locally and in Phoenix to improve this aspect of our community life. |
| As a business owner I feel that our business is deeply affected by our leaders decisions, or lack of decisions. I do not feel that we do not have the strongest leaders in positions of political power and as a result we are for example not attracting and keeping new enterprise that a community like Tucson should. |
| As much as I love the social service feel, we do need to attract some other industry. We are right on the I-10 corridor and should make better use of it - ie. manufacturing and shipping |
| Astronomy |
| Attract a good bakery to the Tucson area |
| Attract bigger and more businesses |
| Attract business industry |

| Attract more businesses |
| Attract more businesses and entertainment options |
| Attract more businesses to the area |

| Attract outside business |
| Attract quality employers |
| Attract retired science community to work on pet research products |
| Attract some large employers |
| Attracts businesses |
| Aversion to development of future business/job opportunity |
| BalaTry to bring in some larger, high-paying companies like Raytheon. |
| Balanced sustainable economic growth (perhaps in light clean industry/high tech/research) with jobs that pay a living wage |
| Be more open to bringing new business |
| Be proactive about who we invite to the community (what industries) |
| Because I am a member of the Tucson Green Chamber of Commerce |
| Because of economics (developers need to make profit) |
| Because of our close vicinity to Mexico there is major drug running across the border and staged from Tucson. This is a drawback for we who live here and for encouraging businesses and large employer bases to settle here. |
| Beginning of a local movement |
| Being a city of over 1 million, we should be able to support sports franchises of different kinds. One of the biggest losses to our community recently is minor league baseball and spring training. I would like to see spring training brought back. The minimum drive a team in Florida must make during Spring training is around 6 hours to a game. Tucson is only 2 hours to a game and would look very nice to teams in Florida. This, along with minor league baseball, have been part of what make Tucson special. Losing these negatively effects our culture of who we are. |
| Better Newspaper |
| Better business attraction |
| Better business opportunities and financial options and housing business |
| Better education would draw more industry. Rotary is doing a lot through volunteers to improve reading grade 1-3. But the schools need to step up to the plate with higher standards that teachers are held to. |
| Better health care |
| Better support for bringing new business and military to town |
| Better tourism advertising - more real |
| Big employers work in cycles narrow base |
| Bottom line, tourism is Tucson's major business. Phoenix has all the industry. We should do more to improve our financial situation by creating the premier tourist destination of Arizona in Tucson. |
| Bring in more business/businesses |
| Bring in more business/jobs. |
| Bring in new business |
| Bring in some big business |
| Bring industrial businesses/jobs to Tucson. There are 419 acres zoned industrial in the Flowing Wells area along I-10. Work is continuing to get this property shovel ready. After they arrive, get JTED involved to train future employees of these businesses. |
| Bring into Tucson more industry to create aviable, healthy Job base. |
| Bring large for profits to Pima County |
| Bring more business into Tucson |

| Bring more industry back |
| Brings programs to the area and helps develop the business community A research hospital. |
| Building of new buildings for business |
| Business is important. It is small businesses that create the majority jobs in most communities. I want to be able to start businesses to hire employees so that they can provide for their families. |
| Business opportunities promoted to businesses outside Tucson |
| By doing this it will give a company a reason to come to this city! |
| CHOICE OF UTILITY COMPANIES |
| Can bring in new business |
| Can't attract quality business or workforce if low education for kids. Example: Foothills is thriving and Rincon high school is failing |
| Can't do much about it but our media is terrible. Sensationalized, slanted reporting, lack of investigation, seems to be pitting cities against each other, and be influenced by those with deep pockets with no sense of journalistic integrity. |
| City and County need to focus on attracting businesses |
| City and counties willingness to attract professional companies here |
| City of Tucson mayor and council and Pima County administrator and supervisors are showing very poor leadership and should all be replaces with compentent leaders that represent the people of the community and not special interest. Special interests (developers and money interests) are give most everything they want at the cost to the tax payers and community people. |
| City-wide consciousness raising of the multi-cultural diversity we have in Tucson. Billboards, PSAs, etc. |
| Clean air is crucial to our health and to attracting tourism dollars, and even to attracting businesses to relocating here. |
| Clean industries, U of A, R & D, economic, social |
| Completely unfriendly towards new business. It is next to impossible to get a business built and open in this area. |
| Congestion at intersections is growing worse and driving away potential businesses from relocating to Tucson |
| Continue to pursue biotechnology. |
| Coordinate inviting private enterprises to set up in this region. |
| Create more jobs in chemistry (makeup, perfume), like Revlon |
| Develop a community market on the scale of the one in Philadelphia's Center City |
| Develop higher paying jobs by attracting new high-tech industry |
| Develop infrastructure for more sustainable, greener living for all. |
| Develop tourism in Tucson - promote our 'old West' heritage - encourage the film industry to return to Tucson. |
| Developers build on pristine land, expect the tax payers to foot the bill for their destruction |
| Direct our economic development officials to focus attention on growing the Green Economy. |
| Diversity is needed in our industrial base |
| Do more to bring in good companies to offer more jobs. |
| Does Davis Monthan bring more money than UofA? |
| Doesn't affect us personally but we get Tuc. TV and Newspaper and feel that the coverage of gangs, drugs, violence etc. hurts our image. That impacts companies that might want to come to the area. |
| Don't let mining interests take our ground water. |
| Double and Triple check what other communities are doing to lure and keep large business |
| Draw Business with liveable wages to the Tucson area |
| Draws business- improves economy |
| Due to the U of A, Pima CC, DMAF, retiree's and Ratheon (sic), we attract people from all walks of life, culture and religion, so we're given an opportunity to learn from one another. |
| ECONOMIC GROWTH AND THE ABILITY TO GET A BIGGER SHARE OF THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE. |
| ESL, GED, and vocational programs will enable Tucson to offer a better-educated workforce, and that, in turn will attract more business to locate and hire here. |
| Each city has its own feel based on its main industry |
| Economic Development in Technological Fields |
| Economic asset attracts new business |
| Economic base= military, University, residential development, Bio-tech, Ventana Medical Systems |
| Economy based on a housing growth |
| Educated people make better citizens, and better schools draw big businesses to stimulate the economy |
| Education is the most important factor in having a successful community and the system in Tucson is lacking in support, funding and performance. This negatively impacts recruitment of top level companies to our region. |
| Egos and interests block new business development |
| Elected officials seem to lack ability to attract business. |
| Emerging new technologies (UA Solar Zone, UA tech park, UA bio park) present opportunities for high-wage economic development |
| Employment opportunities/industry |
| Encourage Large Business to come to Tucson |
| Encourage more middle market companies and diversification |
| End dependence on the military-industrial complex |
| Entice more large Corporations to move here. It would provide more money for the state, and more job opportunities. |
| Even though there are nearly a million people in Tucson and its environs, it feels like a small town. Most people are friendly and everyone knows someone you know. I set up a new business here 17 years ago with great success. Networking has been easy. |
| Family, friends, and co-workers getting terrible education from national media |
| Find some way to get major league baseball back |
| Focus local food production |
| Focus on attracting more environmental and green industries. |
| Focusing on short term profit as opposed to long term community benefits in development has resulted in unattractive development which has resulted in major, clean industries rejecting Tucson for expansion and diminishes the quality of life for residents. |
| For folks in the outlying regions urgent care and emergency care continues to be a problem...having had children with asthma this has been an issue over the years |
| Fortune 500 companies should look into Tucson |
| From the ground up, Tucson is becoming a hub for sustainable design, Green products, LEED certified buildings, alternative energy technologies, organic gardening. This bodes well for the future here. |
| Get industry |
| Get rid of the developers. Bulldoze some of the nastier developments. |
| Give more R&D credits to bring new business to town |
| Go solar and green whereever possible |
| Going green |
| Good variety of services, easy access, considerate and affordable |
| Governments need to focus on creating a sustainable and robust economy to generate resident well being, needed tax revenues for services vs. tax and fee increases, retain our UA graduates. Focus on development of orders for large scale solar electric facilities would be a way to do so, also reduce water usage/reduce environmental damage and related subsequent costs to taxpayers/government |
| Green Incentives |
| Green Infrastructure |
| Green jobs |
| Green jobs would be a great future for our community |
| Green transportation (personal and public) |
| Hard for large companies to start a business here |
| Have 'greener' industry |
| Having a vibrant downtown is the key to a successful, fun city. If we want to attract good jobs and intelligent and creative people here, we need a creative and fun downtown. |
| Having just returned from Philadelphia, where I experienced its Center City Market, I was totally wowed and though, 'I want one of these for Tucson'!'It is a farmer's market on steroids, all under a roof and open each day of the week. Something like this would be a tremendous asset to downtown development. |
| Health care |
| Health care (VA) overloaded with snowbirds - includes elders - health care is all-inclusive |
| Health care is excellent |
| Health care very important |
| Heart Hospital, Arizona Oncology right on top of it |
| High quality of health care available |
| Historically, government is largely what Southern Az has done (e.g. Air Force, UA, State, County). People look to government for too much in So. Az. Need to do things that attract privste payrolls to change mindset. |
| Hospital care is outstanding |
| Hospitality Business |
| Houses Davis Montham |
| I am an architect, but we need a sustainable economy based on tourism, solar, optics, and bioscience. |
| I am in sales, and have clients that cannot get their businesses open because sometimes we are not business friendly. Too many restrictions and take too long to process. |
| I believe that the Green Economy and the Buy Local efforts are key to our future as a viable community. |
| I came to Tucson for work primarily. Our current primary industries are dependent on unsustainable practices such as military and weapons for military. We lose many University students to other cities. We have abundant solar resources. Other states are moving ahead on this. There are technologies available that use less water to create solar so there should be no reason to move forward. We are also leaders in water harvesting and could capitalize on this if the Chamber of Commerce were to include green industry and not just developers and old standards. |
| I do think some good progress has been made of late--thankfully--after years of a lot of nothing. So much more could happen though to attract people downtown and the UA should be a big player in it. Movie theaters, student housing, etc. should be pursued. And let's re-do Hotel Arizona with Rio Nuevo funds! That could be made into a cool hotel and solve part of the problem--and build a couple of little hotels--Courtyard Marriott style. |
| I feel that people in general are fairly uneducated these days and learning is an important habit. Also, companies that could provide good jobs do not come here since Arizona is one step above Misissippi in education and they are last |
| I have a small marketing company and UMC is one of my large clients. Being involved with them for the past 5 years has opened my eyes to all the incredible docs and research that we have in our own backyard. I know that some folks think of UA as a small school in a small town with a great basketball program...we are so much more and are growing in every direction so rapidly. |
| I like the fact that I have a feeling in this community that I am not just a 'number' and that I will never see anyone I know because of the size of the community. I work in the tourism industry and feel a sense of family with many of them and I see them outside of work too!! |
| I like the fact that people in Tucson are very creative and business oriented. I love that the University of Arizona is here - I would REALLY love to see the UofA get more involved with the small businesses SPECIFICALLY here in Tucson and do more to promote those businesses here than importing larger businesses from elsewhere. But on the same note, I am not against businesses moving here, as a matter of fact I would love to see more businesses move here and have specific areas or locations that those businesses could move to - kind of like San Diego.. |
| I like the idea of the downtown being equal in employment to other areas, such as the UofA and Raytheon |
| I like the new areas around Club Congress and Maynards, I like to see areas like this continue to be encouraged. This adds to the quality of life, and the tourism. |
| I love that everywhere I go in this city, someone is promoting a green living idea, or getting up into the mountains, or Saguaro National Park. People here really appreciate the desert and the surrounding mountains. |
| I love the earth and want it to be clean and usable for a long time... by the way, mining can be reasonably sustainable and it is important to the Arizona economy! |
| I think Tucson is a great place to live, but as the jobs leave Tucson, or don't come to Tucson, then many of us can't survive. If we don't bring jobs then it becomes more expensive for all that live here to go on living. Many have to take unemployment and other social services just to survive. I'm not against helping others, but it becomes a draw to the government and those that are working and also the companies that are already here. That is why the quicker we can incentivise companies to bring good jobs to Tucson, the quicker we can recover. Jobs also bring dollars for funding projects such as parks, and arenas and open space. Funding is king for all projects in Tucson. So bring jobs. I see nothing wrong with a mine, that will bring billions of dollars to our community, especially since that is one of the 5 Cs of our state seal, 'COPPER' (and it's what the state seal is made of). |
| I think Tucson needs to attract more business. Everything seems to be going to Phoenix Metro Area. There are not many jobs in the area. |
| I think that with the drought we are in, the city of Tucson should have a rule/law for businesses: New business parking lots have to have xeroscaped landscapes to help prevent flooding and to help reduce/eliminate plant water bills. |
| I want Tucson to thrive, economically, socially, and educationally. I want us to attract eco-friendly business to a city that values its heritage and its environment. We cannot do that without excellence in education. I want this to be a city I am proud to live in and one that I want to continue to live in. |
| I want to live among businesses and people who respect and protect the environment in general and Tucson's natural world in specific. |
| I wish more comprehensive focus be given to attracting larger industries with better paying jobs, offering higher skill jobs. It would be an incentive to retain students coming out of our own universities. |
| I wish we had some more corporations here. It is so limiting that we do not have hardly any big business here |
| I worry that the face of Tucson is the divided political scene and that outsiders perceive that we are disorganized and backwards in the way the City is run. This will not be good for attracting new businesses, investments, visitors, etc. |
| I would like Sahuarita to grow and attract local companies and less commercial business. |
| I would like every person in the city to feel safe and cared for: every child should get a good education, and every person should have access to affordable, quality health care; a safe place to live; food security; and the opportunity for regular (preferably meaningful, useful) work. |
| I would like to see Tucson capitalize on our status as a solar city and combine forces to do what it takes to influence the state legislature and corporation commission to offer carrots and sticks to build our green industry. |
| I would like to see more high quality indutries and jobs come to Tucson, e.g., Roche, Advanced Ceramics (Sahuarita), Optical and solar indurstries. Tucson is a really neat place, but could definitely use a higher percentage of educated and dynamic people. |
| I would promote Tucson more to groups, entertainment agents, etc to improve the viability and economic impact on our community. |
| I'd like Tucson to become more of a city where businesses want to relocate to, where small businesses thrive, where public markets like Granville Island become a source for fresh food instead of chain super markets |
| I'd work a lot harder to retain knowledge.. retain UA grads from leaving. We have one of the highest ranked business schools in the country, yet very little business development is occuring. More efforts to stimulate, and retain, young business leaders through local efforts to 'grow' businesses of the future. |
| I'm 100% dedicated to a solar powered and green Tucson. I believe we need to find a new way to live and interact with each other, nature, animals, and our planet. Going solar and green brings these benefits and life lessons to us. We'll all be the better for it. |
| I'm accustomed to life in a larger city than Tucson. For it's size, Tucson has a good selection and quality of cultural activities and events, i.e., theater, music, films, discussion groups. Some of these are endangered, for example, the University by the State's short sightedness on supporting education and cultural activities that attract business with higher paying salaries. |
| I'm not a business person, but I have had some experiences with the Tucson City ordinances, requirements, rules, etc. and heard from friends (business people) - that the City is Nightmare when it comes to being business friendly. How can you expect to have a vibrant City when it's making it so difficult for business and private enterprise to come into the area and make a go of it here? |
| If alternative energy could be made a viable commodity, we could turn this thing around |
| If down town had an infusion of businesses, which would mean parking and back to street improvements, I think that the disparate communites would be joined into a more cohesive unite |
| If we don't stop agricultural and mining usage of water (basically mining water), we're screwed. Agriculture and mining now use 80%+ of water in this area, and if we'd just stop the most stupid usage (pasture, cotton, pecans, and copper mining), we'd have enough water, despite the drought. |
| Improve Tucson image to encourage clean industry |
| Improve economic development. Attract employers! |
| Improve the economy so that people could make a living wage here. entice business to actually come here and STAY here to improve the tax base. the Uof A and raytheon cannot be the only major business in town |
| Increase environmentally sound industries for sustainability e.g. solar |
| Increase urban agriculture |
| Increased incentives to draw community supportive corporations |
| Industry focus of distribution and logistics |
| Instead of raising the sales tax to one of the highest in the nation, the city needs to live within its means. Lower taxes means businesses will be able to earn more money, grow and hire more people. New businesses will be attracted to Tucson. Lower taxes are important to those in poverty as well as the business owner who is trying to make a profit. Our city leaders make anti-business decisions! |
| Interest in starting a business |
| Investment $$$ for entrepreneurial development |
| It appears to me as a layman, that it takes forever to get many worthwhile business projects off the ground and running. |
| It inspires me to participate in the arts and small businesses that have grown beyond our city; Tucson seems to attract people with creative minds and talents that they are so willing to share. |
| It is difficult to successfully run a business here because of too much red tape and regulation. City and county government should encourage business development and be more helpful to business. Improving the business climate would result in greater job opportunities and increase revenue into city and county coffers. |
| It is getting better, much improvement thanks to RTA and Sun Tran. But ridership still seems low and RTA appears headed for a slowdown. Big Tucson employers, including public government, need to openly support alternate work schedules and telecommuting. |
| It makes it an interesting place to live and visit |
| It seems that more effort should go into attracting large-scale manufacturing and high-tech businesses to the area. Creating the right climate to attract such businesses would also grow the ancillary, support businesses that wouuld follow. Both would then increase quality job opportunities for our citizens. |
| It's a no brainer to use solar (the effort started in the 1970s) and have green businesses |
| It's difficult to start a new business in this city because of existing codes and regulations |
| It's pretty generic, and not always in the right place. There are an amazing amount of PR angles that aren't 'exploited' that give folks a more real picture of Tucson, we're not just cactus, cowboys, and Ratheon. |
| It's pretty lacking....I'd like to use my chemistry degree in areas that interest me, which would be pharmaceuticals, make up companies, etc... |
| It's somewhat related to the first answer. My hope is that the incompetency will make it less likely that people and businesses will want to move here. This is already happening. There are already too many people here. Maybe some will start moving away. |
| Jobs, jobs, jobs! We have become a mecca for low wage, low skill service jobs. There are few choices for any recent college grads to stay in Tucson, and limited opportunities for the rest of us who would like to move on and up. For example, the environmentalists are making it extremely difficult for Rosemont Copper to bring in high paying jobs that in turn would help spur the economy. |
| Lack of an educated labor pool results in no business coming to Tucson |
| Large corporations and large retail entities often choose other cities over Tucson because of the 'red tape' they face here, the lack of ability to make decisions quickly, and the unwillingness to give deep tax breaks that other cities are willing to give. We lost Spring Training! We lose large retail chains! We don't expand in big business!l |
| Less big box stores |
| Less restrictive paper work that basically isn't productive and doesn't encourage business to stay in Tucson |
| Less wrangling about who does "green" better. Let's work together! |
| Lets encourage university professors to create businesses. Support them with business training and capital. Without a broader based economy I fear we are doomed to low paying jobs. |
| Limit sprawl - don't sell land/buy land to limit sprawl - allow higher density |
| Local food and businesses=better for our economy and better for our earth |
| Lower utility costs for residents to match the average family income. |
| Major league baseball |
| Make it easy / desirable for businesses to come to Tucson or to start a new one |
| Making downtown brighter and cleaner would bring more visitors and help tourism. |
| Many UA grads stay and start businesses; creates a workplace community |
| Media coverage |
| Medians/road quality |
| Medical/Technological focus (Raytheon, UMC, etc.) |
| Mining |
| Mobilize the entire population to reduce our mamterial footprint and produce more of our own vital resources in the region |
| Monopolies vs. solar economy and industry |
| More Businesses |
| More advertisements |
| More big business in Tucson (only small firms) |
| More business, more jobs, better economy |
| More businesses |
| More clean industry |
| More clean jobs |
| More effort to bring new business/families to the Tucson area |
| More efforts need to be made to bring in good employers and business |
| More focus on manufacturing - producing items for sale |
| More high-tech industry |
| More incentives for green businesses, especially solar |
| More incentives to attract green businesses (solar in particular) to come to Tucson |
| More industry would increase job opportunities, especially in professional industries where the tax base is higher |
| More industry, enterprise, and jobs |
| More of a selection of utilities companies would allow for competition. Possibly not a shut off of the whole Rita ranch area. |
| More solar and renewable energy development and practices |
| More support for local ranches/farms sustainable agriculture |
| More support of green energy |
| More tech production facilities, less invasive industries |
| Much of the lack of cohesion is - I believe - due to the number of military and defense people that began arriving in the 50's. The values of those involved in military and defense are very different from the values of those other dominant economic sectors and I find them to be anti-social which I think is unsustainable. An economy that is 15% based in defense/military isn't a problem. But one that is 50% is. |
| My husband and I have been fortunate to find jobs here and have carved out professional niches. I cannot say that for many of my friends and colleagues, who wanted to stay here post college/grad school, but found the opportunites limiting. Even though my husband and I have good jobs here, we often wonder if we are limiting ourselves professionally by staying here. We love the area, and have deep family roots here, and will stay as long as we can continues to professionally thrive. I just wish that there were more opportunites for well paying jobs here. I have been very encouraged by the recent news of Roche bringing well-paying jobs to the area. Lets have more than that! |
| My husband has been unemployed for over 2 years now here in Tucson. The job prospects are not great, despite college education and secret clearance. We need to attract more high quality companies to Tucson to improve the job market, and improve the quality of life and standard of living here in the desert. We need to fill all of the vacant commercial buildings in town with companies ready to hire and serve our community. |
| My husband is a realtor and business is so bad, people are not encouraged to come here for business and we need to keep our students as well as others to do business in our community |
| Need a better tax environment to attract companies, but that's risky because the money coming into the city would be lower |
| Need big business in this town to make good paying jobs |
| Need more businesses to move here |
| Need more diverse industries; more knowledge based and high value industries; more sustainable industry as opposed to housing, mining, tourism, agriculture based on water. |
| Need more local businesses |
| Need more wealth creators and tax payers |
| Need to attract more jobs/companies |
| Need to be doing more conservation & using more alternative energy |
| Need to continue to bring in clean business |
| Need to understand what's driving the perception of crime (media and politicians) |
| Needed to attract business |
| Needs more industry |
| New businesses struggle to get established because there is too much jumping through hoops |
| New industries can take environment into consideration and protect the environment (not use too much water) |
| New money coming in; venture capital |
| News that speaks to what's right in our valley and what's been accomplished or done for the better. |
| Newspaper/City communication |
| No community can grow without businesses, and ours continues to grow while jobs continue to become more scarce and less well-paid. Our community can't live on restaurants and service work, we need manufacturing and high tech support, and we are a great city for both of those. What is stopping those companies from coming here? This needs to be looked at and corrected. |
| Not enough big companies |
| Not enough emphasis on creation of new businesses / jobs |
| Not secondary. we could attract more corporate HQ's (jobs) and even more tourism $'s |
| Offer incentives to bring business into Tucson. These businesses will hire tax payers to help provide for a better quality of life |
| Once again this impacts all of the citizens. A better reprsentation to the National business community would impact job availability. Not just promoting 'call' ceneters. |
| Other than medical staffing, we cannot attract or retain bright, progressive, active and involved citizens without a commitment to make a reasonable lifestyle possible here in Tucson. |
| Our economic prioritizing of prisons and the arm's industry |
| Our economy is largely based on a service model economy, rather than a high tech/high skill-driven model. Would be nice if we could justify more 'livable wage' job creation. |
| Our economy is very shallow with too much emphasis on government spending and service industries. We do not manufacture much or have industry that provides REAL value. |
| Our fiber optics, medical research, and astronomy programs are outstanding. These are facets we must promote and enhance. |
| Our government needs to step up and support pro- business legislation, support initiatives that help our local economy. Until we have this, businesses will not move here and we will continue to have economic issues. Having a small business in this community is hard. |
| Our lack of funding towards public education is unfair and will hurt employers relocating to Tucson. |
| Our poor education system promotes lower paying jobs and an inability to attract companies to relocate here. |
| Our sub par commitment to public education at all levels leaves us with a work force that is not up to standard to attract new business |
| Our vision should be "the easiest region to start a business" |
| Outreach to new business and employers |
| Parks and university and dm and raytheon, ibm , the mines need to coordinate and share resources. they are not separated from the rest of the community. the community needs to function as a whole. parks should be fee-free and be open to all, and treasured by all |
| Pharmaceutical companies are moving to Oro Valley - Ventana has good coordination with the airport authorities so that people can travel easily |
| Phoenix has done a good job with the sports arenas attracting business to the city center |
| Potential for improvement in interstate commerce / industry |
| Private money is always motivated to stimulate success. |
| Proactive in recruiting new renewable industries |
| Professional hockey |
| Provide jobs, and a reason for the top students from UofA to stay in town |
| Proximity of Health Care facilities |
| Public/municipal information exchange |
| Quality educational system including elementry - University. Quality education enhances the community's ability to recruit good companies to want to live and work here. |
| Raising the job opportunities through expanded educational training in order to expand the income opportunities of our residents and provide skilled labor to incoming higher wage employers is an important long term strategy that is generally agreed upon for our future growth. As many benefit we all benefit. |
| Recreational opportunities, brings tourists, attractive to businesses |
| Recruit non-government funded/supported higher paying jobs to Tucson. |
| Recruitment of quality companies to re-locate to build a diverse economic engine for Southern Az |
| Related to the above, I think Tucson can't attract employers because it doesn't have a ready, educated, literate workforce. Tucson can't attract all the businesses that it could because without the workforce, businesses know they don't have a market for their products/services as they would elsewhere. We need to get people ready to work! |
| Restaurants/theaters |
| Seeing the stars at night is both beautiful and useful for astronomical research |
| Seems like there are few major employers here; seems like there is so much more opportunity in Phoenix. Also, if you look at a city like Pittsburgh, there are many more educational institutions. Why is there no private liberal arts college here? |
| Selling Tucson's soul to housing developers sucks the vitality out of the city, makes undeveloped desert areas further from midtown, creates a vast service economy instead of good, professional jobs |
| Service economy salaries |
| Service industries are neccessary for support of the population but are not a good measure of economic growth and can be a liability as seen in the last economic downturn. Manufacturing products, research and technoligical innovation are stong measures of our economic condition and the city and county should go overboard to embrace these industries. However, no bright CEO is going to allow expansion into Tucson and have his employees settle for the third world education. Clearly this is another liability with this city. Why do most, if not all the doctors and professors at U of A and UMC have their children attend private schools or District 16? Education is important to them. Even Greg Byrne, in his short understanding of Tucson knew enough to stay away from TUSD. |
| So it could provide more jobs |
| Southern AZ could be a center for green tech, solar, education. I'm embarrassed by Raytheon and mass imprisonment of our own youth |
| Stop Rosemount |
| Students leave because there are no jobs, companies don't come because the students leave. This Catch-22 has to be broken. |
| Students who graduate from the university are leaving Tucson for higher paying jobs elsewhere. We must create more jobs and opportunities. We must fight for great companies to move here. |
| Sustainable green job emphasis - such as solar! |
| TIA |
| Taxes will go up to make up for the lack of large businesses |
| The Arizona Daily Star has devolved so badly I don't even consult it anymore - there's a huge void in balanced journalism - I find it difficult to get unbiased news |
| The UofA is doing a lot of important research and drawing in a lot of intelligent students to Tucson - both grad and undergrad. Those students go on to stay and be brilliant within the city itself - or go without and help build Tucson and the UofA's reputation countrywide - and the university itself offers so much to the community and Tucson culture. |
| The amount of restrictions Tucson places on new businesses makes it difficult for them to establish |
| The area around the airport and Raytheon should be cleaned up so that more people want to live and work nearby. It is the first thing that people see when flying in, and would give a much better first impression. It would also help to attract more businesses to the industrial area. |
| The attitude of Tucson being a small city. The spending perogatives of the Council. The anti-business focus. These things impact all of us. The trolley won't save the City and keeping businesses out and making it difficult for small business to start decreases revenues. |
| The banksters and developers immediately take over the foothills, build where our wild animals roam and cross, sell the real estate for money, leave the original neighborhoods in poverty and distress then leave!!! |
| The city has lost too many large companies and industries to keep future business from exploring Tucson as a base of operations. The loss of major military contracts, etc. has lost the city much needed revenue. And, it takes too long for businesses, even small ones, to get through all the red tape to start a business in the city. |
| The city is one of the worst places to try to open a business, this has caused many small businesses to either not open or move out |
| The community would be better able to finance its priorities if it had a broader business base, and more interesting people would be attracted here. |
| The current rates do not come near covering the actual cost of getting potable water to us, and new development is being permitted water privilege which endangers agriculture, residences, and natural environments all over the state. |
| The current recession can be used to re-examine and re-direct our priorities from a boom-town that caters to massive housing projects leap-frogging into the rural areas to an innovative community that capitalizes on our abundant sunshine and invests in the most dense areas of the valley with infrastructure improvements. It would benefit all of us if we stopped promoting new development and started investing in jobs that are sustainable and in the city that is already here. |
| The difficulty of working with the city deters new businesses from coming here |
| The downtown is improving, but to encourage more people to spend more time there, it needs multi-use development. We need people LIVING there. In my mind this is a better solution than a giant new convention center and hotel (I'm glad that notion is currently out of favor). |
| The emerging Green Economy. |
| The fighters are noisy and disturb the peace but we have to put up with them because the base has so much money invested here. Also the interstate and traffic is totally built around the AF base , making it more difficult to travel on the east side. |
| The inability of our leaders to attract and keep businesses, organizations and industries here |
| The infighting between local governments is creating a lack of opportunities to recruit businesses and create new jobs for the future of the community. |
| The large presence of the military and defense industry |
| The military brings money here, and shouldn't be overlooked |
| The mines south of Tucson have devastated the beautiful desert and mountain views, and have created many environmental hazards. They have brought a few jobs to the area, however the price was not worth twice the number of jobs. |
| The mines still have the tax structure rig in their favor. That thinking will destroy our public school system. |
| The negative bashing of Tucson that is apparent in the media and other forms of communication. |
| The newspaper is still the number 1 source of information to many people. The Daily Star is an anti-everything embarrasment for a region this populated. |
| The only way to fix what's been broken is to bring money into the Old Pueblo. There is big money in tourism and entertainment. |
| The potential to be a very green community |
| The region has so much to offer, but the government seems to reject the most important concept. In order to support a million people, there have to be jobs. There needs to be creative thinking in attracting corporate headquarters. I want my children to stay & work in Tucson! |
| The streets, medians, graffiti are a testimant to government incompetence. There seems to be a lack of pride in our city. The city and county set a horrible example. Why should a property owner care about maintaining their property when the city and county don't. How can we even begin to attract new business and industry when the first impression of visitors is negative. |
| The tech sector has to keep growing to create the jobs we need. |
| The university is a good draw. Incentives must attract new business and enhance existing businesses. |
| The weather brings tourism |
| There are a good many 'clean industries' that can be lured here. As a 'right to work' State, that gives us affordable labor. Unions have been instrumental in our economic difficulties in the past, ie; Copper, Auto industry, Garment etc. . . No longer an economic force globally! |
| There are no real jobs in the private sector unless you call customer service centers real. They don't pay that well and it is about all we ever seem to get. |
| There are so few digital art communities outside of LA and NY, but there are some very successful ones like Portland OR that have made their mark in the movie/TV/private digital arena. There are literally a handful of businesses here that are digital arts related, but they are limited to small private contracts to sustain themselves. Tucson recently acquired a branch of Sony's online gaming branch and I had hoped that the community would be eager to attract more. Digital animation and graphics are the future of the film/TV world and Tucson could become a major hub in the industry. Before Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had offered amazing tax incentives to digital animation companies to set up shop in Louisiana because they knew that it is a huge business that has tremendous earning potential. With the disaster, however, they had to send all of their new businesses elsewhere. There is no reason that Tucson cannot become a huge digital arts industry area. I cannot say enough about this! |
| There are so many places to go and things to do to stay active and enjoy the beauty of the area. So many knowledgeable volunteers who share their expertise with residents and visitors alike. |
| There are so many positive things council could do, but it seems the developers are rewarded while others are left to their own devices |
| There are three or four major employers in Tucson and I believe more companies should come to Tucson to bring more people to the area |
| There in lots of emerging technology here, but VERY little money to help drive it to commercialization. Again, I know there is activity, but there needs to be more. |
| There is a lack of young professionals in their 20s and 30s here because of the very limited jobs environments. This region needs to attract more industry to become more vibrant and less of a retirement community. |
| There needs to be more substantial business development in the region, not just adding service jobs. |
| There seems to be a lack of large business in town. I think that some of this may stem from ordnances in place to keep Tucson a 'small town.' It is time to leave that old town mentality behind and allow corporations to come in to build large buildings and infrastructure. |
| There should be a way of attracting new business to Tucson without sacrificing tax/monetary advantage. |
| These high taxes in Tucson limit manufacturing growth in Tucson and our ability to bring more employment options to the community. |
| They (leaders) bring in employers (or not) |
| This is a bunch of foreign investors trying to steal our natural resources and send them to China, South Korea, India, and Canada. |
| This makes me very happy. |
| This town has huge deficits and the folks at the time need to attract business for our unempoloyed residents |
| This would promote longevity and a more peaceful type of life in this beautiful region. And if not that...then my #3 item would be to develop a REAL downtown. This would bring more business to this community from both locals and visitors. |
| Throughout most industries the Tucson Community values integrity. |
| Throw out the mayor & council & real estate special interests |
| Time and again companies by-pass Arizona/Tucson because they get different answers from everyone they meet. |
| To get companies to move to Tucson we must improve education so that their are willing to come. Tax incentives work well for the company, but when high level employees refuse to move due to an inferior education system, we need to make appropriate changes. |
| Too much negative media |
| Tourism brings in visitors and new residents. Quality of life - enjoying the parks and nature |
| Trade-off - water supporting agriculture or urban development |
| Tucson Pops, museums, live theater, UA Presents, Tucson Symphony |
| Tucson can't seem to get it managment act together. There needs to more incentives to bring in business. |
| Tucson has a lot of very qualified, intelligent, talented population to fill any need for any clean industry that wants to relocated in the Tucson area. |
| Tucson has a lot to offer that would/should entice businesses to either use or utilize our area/resources which in turn would boost our economy to where it should be as a portal city. We should focus on the ongoing sale of these resources as a top priority. |
| Tucson has a reputation for low pay and a lot of low-class employment opportunities. Raising the standard of this community is a multifaceted project that requires education, opportunity and investment in work that means something to the individual as well as the nation. More partnerships with the University Of Arizona and clean businesses should be formed and long-range plans for creating fertile start-up incubator parks must be laid down. |
| Tucson has traditionally been a haven for artists of all kinds. We support a symphony, an opera, a theatre, and a ballet, plus several museums. And we have UApresents. Keep the arts alive! This means giving artists and arts companies EXCELLENT coverage in the newspaper, good homes for their performances, and educating the young about music and art - and making performances available to them. |
| Tucson is a desert town. We do not need more golf courses or swimming pools in every backyard. We had water in the Santa Cruz River and now there is none. The developers get as many faucets as they ask for regardless of who will be penalized later |
| Tucson is a wonderful community that could support a large industry. We have Davis Monthan and Ratheon, but could support other larger industries. We also have a wealth of craftsmen. People need to work. |
| Tucson is has very few large corporations and doesn't have a lot of middle market companies. As a result it's revenue base suffers. It needs more company and industry diversification. |
| Tucson is missing out! We need a professional hockey team! |
| Tucson is more relaxed than other communitites allowing for a friendly, unpretentious communication amongst each other. This does allow us to be on the cutting edge of research with the UofA and some of Southern Arizona's top employers. |
| Tucson is never going to be a corporate hub - so while we still need to work on attracting more business to our community, we need to come together as a community and promote the commodity that we do have - tourism. nature, culture, restaurants, history, resorts, weather |
| Tucson is relatively low-tech and the local economy reflects that. |
| Tucson needs jobs and bigger companies to move here to create a more stable economy. We can definitely offer the lifestyle, so we need to find other incentives as well. |
| Tucson needs to get serious about attracting Bio tech and High tech industries and the quality of well paying jobs that come with them. Tucson can not thrive on service sector jobs for the masses. |
| Tucson needs to produce something other than copper. Phoenix has a high-tech industrial base. Tucson is all services, which keeps us low wage. |
| Tucson's economy is not sufficiently diverse to grow long-term. We need more industries here of all kinds. We have very few large, diverse companies and then a whole lot of small businesses. A community that has the doctors and lawyers to help the small businesses serve each other is fine, but for long-term expansion and growth we need more. |
| Tucson's leadership is adverse to supporting small business and to new businesses coming to Tucson. The 'good old boys' are extremely short-sighted. Tucson's archaic planning framework and the unfavorable, and often clueless and conflicting, regulations are frequently detrimental to supporting and growing our local business community. |
| Tucson's vision should be to become the biotechnology capital of the southwest. Without a platform like this, higher paying jobs and therefore better educated citizens will continue to bypass Tucson. |
| Tucson, like so many other southwestern cities, is continually trying to balance the needs of growth with maintaining our landscape as a community. More infill is needed, and a much more concentrated development plan, without selling out to big developers. |
| Tucsonans don't seem to realize that without growth, new businesses, there won't be a Tucson. We need more businesses in Tucson to improve the economy and then keep it going. My husband has been out of work for almost 2 years, with no relief in sight. |
| U of A and other higher education organizations provide for both post secondary and adult learning opportunities. This has resulting in an excellent job base with the U of A & their Tech Park, Oro Valley Bio-Tech and Raytheon/defense based contractors. We need to attract and maintain more high-end jobs. |
| USE CHANNEL 12 AS A REAL TOOL FOR PROVIDING INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC |
| Unemployment is high and overall, wages are low. We need to nurture relationships and recruit new businesses. |
| Until the climate is such to support small business and they reduce the personal property tax we will not compete for growing companies. |
| Using 1st Street as an example, empty buildings where a lot of businesses have gone down, build these back up to improve the area; reuse these buildings, or tear them down and drive business to the area to help the area so homeowners don't lose their property value and things get booming again. It's looking very bad over here and going downhill and there's no reason for it! |
| Utilities and streets need to be upgraded and maintained to alleviate the current state of disrepair. |
| Very limited in ideas to bring in other business. the streetcar is a waste |
| Water availability is a critical issue that affects every aspect of the community, from the survival of species to the pace of development. The ground water situation is dire, but there is little community awareness efforts from maintstream sources (news outlets, billboards, etc.) |
| We are losing out on economic development because we have drop-outs who don't finish school. There has to be an educated workforce to attract employers. There is a need for greater emphasis on all levels of education |
| We can be proud that we are supporting the armed forces |
| We can not attract industry or attract people here to expand our economy if our educational system is not improved. |
| We could attract clean industries, highly skilled workers and healthy families if we vastly improved our K-12 and post high school educational systems. It can't be done with our present legislative thoughts in this State. |
| We focus on baseball to the exclusion of the possibilities presented by our many talented perofrmers and artists. Tucson Electric Park could be Tucson Electric Theater with less effort than we think. |
| We have an abundance of sun - get rid of mountain top mining, all coal mining as its polluting our environment |
| We have an opportunity to be a leader in renewable energy but no one has stepped up. For god's sake, New Jersey is the nation's #1 producer of solar energy products; they have 100 days less sunshine a year. What is wrong with this picture. |
| We have so many of them, and i think that our economy definitely depends on these local, small businesses. They add to the culture of our city, and they help define a little more about what we are. I include KXCI in this list. |
| We have some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, so why don't we see any movies being made here anymore? Are our taxes too high? Are our fees too much? I don't know, but I do know that movies bring people here, and once they see this place they are more likely to love it like I do! Let's get some pictures rolling! |
| We lack the manufacturing base and need quality employment opportunities here locally |
| We must invest in our children's education to ensure a strong future for the region. poor educational opportunities and an undereducated workforce does nothing to attract/keep businesses and investment in the region. |
| We need a greater business base to survive this downturn in the economy. A difficult task, but tax incentives MUST be offered to corporations to move to Tucson. We need more corporate partners to help our city and the cultural scene. |
| We need another big company like Raytheon. Not another missile company. We need a solar company, that will create more jobs. 10,000 jobs. |
| We need more forward thinking people to hold these positions. They do not think outside the box when it comes to improving the City and County that Tucson resides in. We need better roads. better ways to move traffice (ie freeways) to get people from one side of Tucson to the other without always having to use surface streets. Also by improving the flow of traffic it will provide be transportation for business that maybe looking to relocate. |
| We need more large employers. |
| We need to attract a Triple A franchise to Tucson and to bring more people to downtown Tucson. A baseball stadium with either downtown or mountain views will bring around 10,000 people to downtown Tucson. Additionally, a 15,000 seat arena with luxury boxes would attract concerts, a minor league basketball or hockey team, NCAA men's basketball tournaments, and possibly 1 or 2 UofA basketball games. |
| We need to be a center of educational excellence with more Basis, San Miguel, Imago Dei schools. Our P-20 education needs to be a beacon & mecca which will then attract high knowledge, high value employers |
| We need to be attracting more businesses to Tucson, and we need to support better our local, family-owned businesses. |
| We need to be better educated as a city; this might attract more businesses with high-paying jobs. |
| We need to decide as a community which jobs we value, and work to promote and attract them |
| We need to get more industry into Tucson and create jobs |
| We need to remove the legal barriers that make it difficult to start and maintain certain businesses |
| We need to work on our public education in order to make this a place attractive to companies with high-paying wages. We should not be going after call-centers and other unskilled, low paying companies. We should be going after optics, high-tech companies. They require a skilled work force, however. If that means slashing administrator jobs in order to pay teachers better, closing some schools in order to focus energy, money on a more select set of schools: do it! Focus on teachers, the kids, and BASICS that are now counted as frivolous extras to be cut: art, music, languages, P.E. I had a first class public education here from 1st through 12th grade, one that sent me to Stanford, Oxford and Harvard Universities. I worry that our public schools will not serve my children nearly as well. Also, we need to partner better with the U of A. It has been--and should remain a driving force here. Let's work on keeping more of its graduates as the loyal and proud business, entrepreneurial, and artistic engines that drive and shape this town. At the moment, I fear that the UA is more interested in its proposed medical campus in Phx than it is in its home base campus here in Tucson. |
| We seem to tax and fee small businesses to death. It is sad to drive around town and see a business closed that you saw openthe day before. We need to encourage them to develop and stay in business. |
| We should be the leader in solar energy rather than known for our air force base. nor should we continue to allow Raytheon be our best employer. solar energy jobs should be the best. |
| Why does a city like Albuquerque look like it has way more industry and business than Tucson...same size but everything is nicer and cleaner and their are many bigger business...can poor little Tucson get none and they all go to Phoenix..... |
| Why use anything else? We've got plenty of sunshine, it's clean, and creates a new industry |
| With around 10 percent unemployment we can't discourage new business from coming to Tucson |
| Without a quality public school system new companies with high paying jobs won't come here and items 1 and 2 will never change |
| Without a vision and plan of corporate development and the financial support that attends it, Tucson will suffer from lack of business and community growth. It seems that our community has taken an anti-corporate, anti-growth stance that can only serve to damage our present and jeoparize our future. |
| Wonderful doctors |
| Work actively to supplant call-center and poorly paid manufacturing jobs with high tech and research business. |
| Work out which types of industry are best for this region. |
| Work with the U of A to develop new businesses and companies. |
| Working in this local economy has always been tough, and with the trends in climate, water, petroleum and food costs we must become very innovative to continue to work and live here. We must work to invest in ourselves, keep our investments in Tucson, and be wise about who we invite to invest in us from the outside. Mining is the wrong long-term model; cultural tourism and center for innovation is right. |
| Would like to Tucson to be a mecca for industry leaders in solar/alternative energy technology and use; not only to address global warming, but to bolster our flagging economy with high-tech jobs in an industry that makes sense to our region. Think of all the abandoned strip mines (Bisbee leaps to mind) that could be filled with solar panels to generate electricity). |
| You can't beat it. The climate also provides us with opportunities to explore alternative energy sources. |
