Theme 1. Natural Environment
What do you like the most about our community/region?
  Natural beauty of the environment
  Natural environment / desert, mountains
  Sonoran desert biodiversity (Conservation Plan)
In general, it seems like people in this region are more aware of the fact that they live in the desert and are more concerned with how they respond to that fact.
Mountains / wild space close to urban space
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?
Water planning – it's a desert – all out efforts
Increase water conservation and native edible green space
Why is this important? How does this affect you?
  Environmental
Lots of people care about environment

Theme 2. Built Environment
What do you like the most about our community/region?
Retain lifestyle – promote economic growth – consider density
Old neighborhoods with low density & the potential for a high quality of life
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?
Concern for “our” community – allow / plan for change carefully
I would like to see real planning for the future that respects quality of life in established neighborhoods & respects historic preservation
Want to see more redevelopment & reinvestment in core of metro area (Central Tucson)
  Upgrade older neighborhoods
I would like to see growth for growth's sake de-emphasized
  Willingness to reach agreements
  Respect for planning
Emphasis on growth (bigger is not better)
Why is this important? How does this affect you?
  Where will density go?
No emphasis on protecting intent of zoning laws
Some people want to live in center
Will bring people in if some mixed use
  People not attracted to core
Need more mixed, flexible use – must be done appropriately – stakeholder input – pocket park (example)
Students are not real neighborhood stakeholders
Like a little space (2.5 lots) – fruit trees, workshop, etc; don't want to have to drive to a community garden; space to play; no respect for established neighborhoods
Densification increases quality of life – protects environment
Tucson is missing flexible uses, fine-grained approach
Battle between infill vs. no infill – major hurdle
  Growth not necessarily the goal
  Encourage sustainable growth
  Does conservation encourage sprawl?
Not have growth for growth's sake

Theme 3. Recreation
What do you like the most about our community/region?
  Lots of sunshine
Climate & proximity to outdoor activities – hiking, etc.
Great access to desert, mountains for recreation
  Hiking

What do you like the most about our community/region?
I love that I live in a bike friendly town where there are many others that share this interest – using the 3rd St path to get to work is very enjoyable
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?
More bicycle & pedestrian friendly streets
  Fix potholes
  Improved bike & pedestrian infrastructure

Theme 5. Education
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?
  Better education (schools)
Health care, food security & education should not be sacrificed any more
Funding for public education – higher priority
TUSD is a mess – education needs to be a higher priority (this is a state / country-wide issue, not limited to Tucson / Pima County)

Theme 6. Leadership
What do you like the most about our community/region?
University of Arizona – continuous vocal official support
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?
Accountability in government (i.e., Rio Nuevo)
Change – like to see U of A become a part of the community
Increase attitude of tolerance (all people, towards each other's differences)
Divisive, mean-spirited politics & lack of leadership
  Constructive positive attitude
Seems like things are very slow to get done or are simply “dead in the water” (i.e., Rio Nuevo??)
  Leadership / more cooperation
Why is this important? How does this affect you?
  Phoenix has spent $3 billion
  Haven't supported something completely
  Haven't allowed leaders to lead
Have failed to support planning – no cash
Elected officials don't stay long enough

Theme 7. Economic Development
What do you like the most about our community/region?
  U of A – big economic employer & students
What do you most want to change or improve about our community/region?

  Economic development strategy
More local food production and distribution
Would like to see more emphasis / taking advantage of Tucson as a “solar city”
More economic diversity / opportunity (for all people in region)
Why is this important? How does this affect you?
  Decay of urban core
  Clean industries, U of A, R & D, economic, social

Theme 8. Identity
What do you like the most about our community/region?
Feels like a “big town” rather than a megalopolis like Phoenix
  Strong sense of community
Small town feeling – easy to get involved in the community and make a difference
  Friendliness, small town feel
  Unique identity
  U of A bringing diversity
Affordable events & family oriented activities
History, culture is kept visible / alive in many part of town
Diversity is important – many ideas, suggestions can come from anyone regardless
  Diverse cultures, lifestyles – multiplicity
  Cultural history
Opportunity to attend music, cultural, educational, outdoor events, etc.
  Arts community and creativity
  Art and culture events
Why is this important? How does this affect you?
  We all value culture, identity
