Imagine Greater Tucson 2010-11 Phase I Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to An attractive, clean and aesthetically interesting physical environment |
| 1. Clean up the town, and I'm not specifically speaking about the south side. The dregs of society need to be cleansed. |
| 1st impression is important, when you are driving into Tucson |
| A livable, enjoyable community is one that is cared for and loved. Invest in taking care of the resources and infrastructure we have already. Maintain the parks and streets according to best management practices, take care of the plantings so they are healthy and aesthetically pleasing (not overpruned or neglected), clean out the trash. Make Tucson such a pleasant-appearing community that people want to be here. |
| A large part of our ecomony is tourism. Yet when I bring people here I am embarassed of the lack of landscaping, trash everywhere, and the grafetti! The I-10 is most people impression of Tucson- how bout landshaping the medians and making it look nice. Have you driven the I-10 around TEP?! |
| A little cleaner |
| A location as beautiful as Tucson should be healthy vibrant and ALIVE! I have lived her for 12 years and have seen minimal changes that improve Tucson business and aesthetics. |
| A lot of neighborhoods seem like they are run down. Neighbors don't care about keeping up their yards. Weeds growing all over the sidewalks. Streets full of potholes. The city doesn't have a modern feel to it. |
| A more attractive streetscape |
| A sign of pride among citizens here |
| A systematic plan to improve the aesthetic/visual condition of our community |
| A visual upgrade is needed....some neighborhoods are slowly getting an indentity. Need to clean the inner city neighborhoods up.... |
| Add more drought-tolerant trees and shrubs along the freeway, and walls with some art to mask the industrial look from I-10. It is not attractive to people passing through Tucson. Stone Ave. really needs some upgrading also, by painting buildings, planting trees, picking up trash, and removing graffiti. |
| Aesthetically gorgeous area that provides a sense of freedom, reflection and connection to the natural world |
| Aesthetics |
| Aesthetics are important to me |
| Aesthetics of the city |
| Aesthetics of the landscape |
| Aesthetics, better for critters, etc. |
| After a few years of being in Tucson without, I finally had to buy a car to get around. As population expands, more cars will only mean more congestion/wider roads. Clean, safe, convenient mass transit would free up lanes of cars, and prevent air pollution. More dedicated bike streets would help, too. |
| Again, I think City offices, officers, personnel need to get the resources to take the steps needed to make residents responsible for keeping their personala property free of weeds, old rusting cars, all sorts of old stuff they have parked in front of and alongside their homes. |
| Air pollution has health consequences. And litter is an eyesore that degrades the community for everyone. Graffiti falls under this category as well. I know we have some graffiti abatement programs, but there is still too much. |
| An improved focus on landscaping and trash pickup would make the City more attractive, especially in the 'gateway' areas. |
| Another sales tax (RTA) and spending is happening without accountability. Painted empty buses, new fare system - I didn't vote for aesthetic but additional functional base service. Why are government staff so large? COT - Pima County? |
| Architects, consultants paid large amounts but no results. Money is pocketed without accountability. Someone is profiting but not the citizens of Tucson. |
| Architectual styles in the city reflect Mexican influence. Helps give the city a sense of place and history. |
| Architecture |
| Architecture, food, customs. It is important to me to preserve, cultivate and celebrate our Southwest and Mexican-influenced culture. |
| Architecture, food, people etc... |
| Architecture/outlook/people. |
| Are there options other than sales tax to fund city services? Rental taxes? Lodging taxes? We need something more stable. The most visible sign of reduction in city support seems to be a huge amount of graffiti right now,but obviously there are so many more areas less visible. |
| Art is classy and it says a city cares about aesthetics and fine thought and that the city wants people to think and appreciate |
| As a landscape architect that has relocated here from the East, I find the environment of Tucson highly unique and worth protecting. I find the Tucson community generally understanding and respectful of the desert environment. |
| As a person suffering with arthritis, the warm and dry climate appeals to me. I don't like to be restricted by snowfall and the cleanup. |
| As beautiful as Tucson's natural beauty is it is equally remarkable for the many, many eyesores around the city particuarly in areas where there are people who 'are NOT' of 'money'. You don't see the trash, graffit, potholes in the old residential roads in places like the FootHills. Why do we see so much of that outside the 'ring of privilege'? |
| As one who lives in mid-town, I am sick of the slumlord eye-sore trailer parks near Columbus and Pima and other areas. I'm not suggesting making the tenants homeless, but these eyesores have got to go and be replaced with higher quality (yet affordable) housing. |
| As time goes on, I find less and less visually appealing areas of town. |
| As we travel across the country, it is so obvious when you enter or leave the Arizona state lines. We have the dirtiest freeways and county roads of any state. |
| Bad houses, bad smell, and industry |
| Beacause there are many that are dirty |
| Beautification of some areas |
| Beautiful landscape, clean and fresh atmosphere |
| Beautiful natural surroundings and preservation of historic architecture |
| Because I can bring my children to play and it is very clean |
| Because I don't like walking on dirty streets, it doesn't look good for our town |
| Because it is agrreable |
| Because it makes Tucson look ugly |
| Because kids can get sick or other people by the smell |
| Because the city is clean and beautiful |
| Because the city looks much more beautiful without the ugly graffiti |
| Because they are very dirty |
| Because we get a lot of tourists and we want them to tell others to return |
| Besides Univeristy of Arizona to some extent, there is no one thing that binds together the community. This could lead to pride and enjoyment for the citizens. Maybe a very cool revamped Reid Park? Or a trendy and family friendly down town? An architectural building or artwork can also get associated with a city's identity. Something different and unique - something to talk about to visitors. |
| Better landscape maintenance |
| Better landscaping around town, less trash/grafetti |
| Beutification of the city. |
| Bring more clean industry to the area |
| Building architecture |
| Business and public buildings in Tucson are not well designed (with one exception the old County Courthouse) and have not held up very well over the years. It saddens me to walk and drive around town and see what destruction peoople have wrought on stunning examples of architecture. |
| Can they make it more friendly, like newer bus for more frequent and highly used routes, cleaner vehicle, fewer roads, more bike lanes, more pedestrian friendly areas. more family oriented night life. |
| Certain parts of town, the south and southwest parts of town in particular, have lots of trash and in general seems rundown. It would be ideal to have someone pick up the trash from teh streets on some sort of regular basis. In my home state, the inmates (trustees) would be responsible for road cleanup. |
| Chiriguerresque Church architecture and colonial style. |
| Church architecture, paintings, statues explain much about people. |
| City beautification projects |
| City cleanliness |
| City cleanliness (streets, buildings) |
| City is dity and rundown, landlords are not responsive |
| City of Tucson Post WWII architecture |
| City wide clean up. |
| City's scruffy/shabby appearance - vacant buildings, buildings on top of streets |
| Clean Streets |
| Clean air |
| Clean air & no big industry pollution |
| Clean community |
| Clean it up |
| Clean it up! |

| Clean up all parts of Tucson |
| Clean up all the garbage along the freeways and streeets |
| Clean up central Tucson |
| Clean up doentown and unsightly run doen hotels, motels, etc. Attract more healthy businesses to help Tucson compete with larger ciities (design, architecture, concerts, art, etc) |
| Clean up downtown and 4th ave faster |
| Clean up eye sores, such as the Grant and 1st Ave area. Get rid of graffiti and clean alleys |
| Clean up many neighborhoods and keep trash off the highway sides. |
| Clean up medians and common areas |
| Clean up neighbor hoods |
| Clean up neighborhoods |
| Clean up the City. Reinstate graffiti abatement. |
| Clean up the I-10 corridor |
| Clean up the area around the University |
| Clean up the blight |
| Clean up the central area |
| Clean up the city weeds, streets, medians |
| Clean up the city. |
| Clean up the downtrodden areas |
| Clean up the gang grafiti and other eye-sores (Grant Rd) |
| Clean up the junk. |
| Clean up the medians |
| Clean up the neighborhoods |
| Clean up the physical environment |
| Clean up the run down areas- put pride into our community. Make Tucson the leader in Solar Energy- with our 360 days of sunshine, it is a no brainer. |
| Clean up the run-down areas |
| Clean up the town (trash, landscaping, neightborhood ordinances) |
| Clean up the vacant lots. |
| Clean, fairly well planned. Minimal blight that beseiges most of Tucson. |
| Clean-up some the major roads/stores e.g. Speedway |
| Cleaner and more child friendly areas |
| Cleaner neighborhood |
| Cleaner parks |
| Cleaner roads for more bikes |
| Cleaner streetscapes |
| Cleanliness and order is beautiful and pleasing |
| Cleanliness litter |
| Cleanliness of the City |
| Cleanup the neighborhoods north of downtown |
| Community groups removed 216 tons of trash from Flowing Wells |
| Community pride (graffiti) |
| Constant wind all over Tucson creates blowing trash to accumulate daily. A more concerted effort should be made to pick up liter in public areas. Neighborhoods should take care of their own. |
| Continue to keep our streets clean |
| Create a robust graffitti abatement program |
| Crime/Theft/'tagging' |
| Crime/graffiti |
| Dirt, trash, pride in home and community |
| Dirty buildings, etc turn people away. It certainly discourages me from going anywhere downtown |
| Dirty, lots of crime, poor drivers, poor education |
| Dirty, trash |
| Diverse population and architecture |
| Diversity, mix of cultures and influences from the hispanic influence, old west to the university- this is reflected in the arts, architecture, cuisine and celebrations. I want to live somewhaere that has such a 'signature' style |
| Downtown - less scary and dumpy at night, more shiny, new, and exciting |
| Downtown Tucson looks like a slum!!! Congress St. looks like a bowery with bums, what's wrong with this cities leadership???? Looks to me like lack of leadership!!!! |
| Downtown Tucson looks trash filled at times. |
| Downtown should be a place that people want to gather for community related events. In my hometown of Oklahoma City, downtown is the place to do business, to go out on the weekend, to catch a ballgame, and have great shopping experiences. It is esthetically pleasing and easy to get around once down there. Anytime I go back home, downtown is the first place we go. |
| Driving down any of the major East/West arteries shows nothing but badly aging strip malls. Provide serious incentives for owners to perform major renovations that look upscale and attractive! |
| Eliminate graffiti |
| Embarassing to have grafitti and garbage in our town |
| Enhance and maintain landscaping in public areas. |
| Especially for Tucson which needs more |
| Everyone hates a mess. When your city looks a mess, you cannot be proud of it, and then you do not make it a point to take care of other things. When it looks nice, you tend to keep it nice. And feel good about it. |
| Everytime we have a major event in town, like the GEM SHOW, I am very embarrassed by the pot holes and general condition of the streets. A well kept, tidy city speaks volumes. This includes what people see as they drive in form the airport. |
| Figure out a way to reduce the graffiti and other unlawful behavior. |
| Food, art, architecture |
| GRAFFITI |
| General upkeep of residences |
| Get plastic bottles that are recycled for $ |
| Get rid of litter/blight/vandalism |
| Graffiti |
| Graffiti - get rid of it and catch more graffit people and make them accountable for it. Combined with that is getting ride of 'trash' in public spaces like along freeways and empty lots. |
| Graffiti and crime |
| Graffiti is criminal vandalism, and it destroys the aesthetics of neighborhoods. |
| Graffiti removal |
| Graffiti, trash, crime |
| Graffitti all over town makes the community look trashy and uninviting. |
| Graffitti all over town. |
| Graffitti, it makes me sad to see so much of it |
| Having a clean city makes me proud and enhances the natural beauty. Litter and grafitti are a distraction. |
| How can my kid play after a dog walked in this place |
| How clean the community is |
| I HATE graffitti. Although we have a fairly aggressive graffitti abatement program, they could use more money. Plus, we need to stop the taggers. Our medians are looking bad |
| I am Mexican-American, many generations in Tucson, before the gadsen purchase even. The Mexican culture is part of our community in leadership, architecture, language, customs, etc. Being Mexican-American is not limiting unless you are undocumented and can't speak english. Assimilation and inter-marriage is common and not so unusual. |
| I am an architect, but we need a sustainable economy based on tourism, solar, optics, and bioscience. |
| I can't stand traveling in our out of my hometown that i love so much and seeing trash stuck to the fence line all along the interstate. I would feel better about our jailing system if we would put these folks to work, cleaning up the trash instead of watching TV in their cells |
| I cannot believe how filthy this city is. I live near Columbus and Pima and go out weekly to pick up trash. By the next day, garbage is everywhere again. Wherever you go, regardless of the area of the City there is litter, litter, litter! Palo Verde on the way into the City from the airport is an embarrassment. And, now the medians are not being maintained, we are even uglier! |
| I car pool when I can, but I'd prefer my city had clean, efficient, admired and utilized public transportation, even up in the major streets of the foothills and most certainly out to the airport.. |
| I dislike grafitti and stuff like that |
| I do not find the downtown inviting or a place where I want to spend any time. The neighborhoods would look safer and look as if people cared about their homes and city if they were neat and tidy and cared for. |
| I do not like the litter |
| I don't know how it could be done, but a beautification project, esp. for an area like Speedway coming east off of I-10 |
| I enjoy the chance to be outdoors most of the year. The air is clean, the mountains are beautiful and life is better outdoors. |
| I enjoy the mix of cultural influences - the colours, architecture, food, different ways of life. We have a rich sense of the past, and valuable future with intelligent, committed young people supporting Tucson's uniqueness. |
| I enjoy the southwest style of architecture. It helps make Tucson unique in appearance and works well with our southwest climate. |
| I feel that Tucson is a melting pot of cultures. They are reflected in the architecture, arts and neighborhoods you see throughout downtown Tucson. |
| I feel that specific areas of Tucson are worn down, full of debris and spray paint |
| I hate seeing garbage on the ground. I would reinforce the no litter laws. Site people that litter. |
| I hate seeing litter everywhere - especially adults throwing their garbage on the streets. I see the on a regular basis how many people are ignorant of general pedestrian street crossing and white cane laws |
| I have a 14 year old son. It is essential to our overall health to feel safe, secure, and live in well-maintained housing that is affordable |
| I have been active in my neighborhood ( President for 3 years and currently vice president) Association. I have been unable to generate interest in general improvements in appearances. |
| I have noticed that some of tucsons parks and streets have a fair amount of trash. I think this is important because it can leave a bad impression on visitors, and increase disease. |
| I know a lot of work has been done to the downtown area, and the I-10 also, which I think is awesome! I would like to see some areas central though. Some places look run down and I know there are a lot of privately owned homes and so forth that can't be controlled. I think Tucson has the potential to be a beautiful place with out surroundings and artistic community. I'm not sure the solution, but our town looks run down in some areas, and rich in others. It should be beautiful everywhere. |
| I know it isn't high on our list of priorities, however, I can see the neighborhoods declining as the graffiti problem grows. I carry paints in my car and as soon as I see any vandalism, I cover it up, over and over again. I live in midtown, but the problem is everywhere. Why don't the neighborhoods take care of cleaning up their own areas? |
| I know the budget has been cut...but this is a huge problem and makes the city look bad. |
| I know these are tough financial times, but it's difficult to see our city look unkempt and dirty. |
| I like good architecture, there is no charm in the houses here, they look like boxes |
| I like the Mexican influence on architecture and the arts. |
| I like the architecture that makes a place. Tucson is a mix of styles that has many influences. I appreciate the past and hope to keep the fabric that binds us together intact. |
| I like the local art, multi-languages and southwestern architecture; I like people of all different backgrounds |
| I like the mix of hispanic, anglo, and native american influences. This is evident in the food, architecture, and population diversity. |
| I like the old adobe Mexican Territorial architecture, it makes this place a mix of cultures, it's beautiful. I like the dense neighborhoods of small houses in midtown, it's a non-materialistic somehow, compared to glitzy sprawl and all-new buildings. |
| I like the sense of expansiveness I get from the desert. It's clean, clear, wide open. |
| I like the southwest architecture |
| I like to live in a clean place and want to see a more positive image of Tucson |
| I live in midtown - about a mile from the UA. I love my area but notice that even in the middle of town, there are vacant lots. It would be great to develop these lots into community gardens or responsible single family homes. I am disappointed in the mini dorm blight in neighborhoods around campus. These structures are ugly and not in accordance with the neighborhood. |
| I live in the near northside and, while my house and community are wonderful, they are surrounded by less attractive neighborhoods. I would like to see an effort to improve these neighborhoods, as they have a lot of potential and great diversity. |
| I live just west of downtown in the area most affected by the planned revitalization. So far, there is a wall and a few up-scale homes that no-one in the neighborhood could ever afford to purchase. There are so many wonderful things that could be happening: downtown as an all pedestrian area with restaurants, theater, music, outlets for traditional native crafts, the Stewart Boot Company (or similar), good art galleries (like Etherton), and trams to connect to all of it plus the Tucson Museum of Art and surrounding historic sites. 'A' Mtn. could be cleaned up and made into a safe place for walking, biking, and site seeing from trams for tourists, families, others who congregate - but no cars and no alcohol or drugs. The land west of the river should not just be another housing development. We need walkways, horse trails, an interactive science center, movie theaters, coffee shop, a Trader Joe's or Sunflower, a pool, a gym, boutique hotel, amenities that appeal to the neighborhood and to tourists alike. I personally resent the increase in my property taxes that was meant to reflect the higher values that Rio Nueve was going to create. I don't want lower taxes, I want Rio Nuevo!! |
| I love Tucson for its unpretentiousness. Sure there are pockets of fancy shopping centers (AJ's is an example). But for the most part, Tucson is really a run-down town. Mexico's heart didn't die when the Gadsden purchase was made. |
| I love living in the desert, and I love that the Tucson community brings its desert identity into the urban structures as well. Buildings are generally low slung, thus leaving views of the mountains and desert surroundings. Yards are usually landscaped with the desert in mind. Art and architecture are often created around desert themes. |
| I love the earth and want it to be clean and usable for a long time... by the way, mining can be reasonably sustainable and it is important to the Arizona economy! |
| I love the old West feel of Tucson. It's such a beautiful and awesome setting. The architecture might be really shoddy, but the setting is unbelievable. I can't think of many cities with populations around 1 million that are in settings as impressive as Tucson. |
| I really love the Mexican culture - and the festivals, food, celebrations, architectural influences, art, etc. that it brings with it. |
| I shared that #1 is the view of the mountains. I also love seeing landscape or plain stone in medians. To see weeds and bushes/trees going wild makes Tucson not what it could be. |
| I think that it crucial that Tucson does not build into our national parks and preserves Tucson's natural beauty. The weather is so great here that being outside is so appealing and it is so important that we have beautiful, clean, and fun parks/facilities to enjoy the outside. I also think that this attracts tourism. |
| I value the environment and aesthetics. I love seeing the mountains every day, the sunsets and the stars. |
| I want Tucson to look as good as it feels |
| I want to keep my school clean |
| I want to live in a city that understands the value of aesthetics to people's attitudes. Tucson could be amazing if the land planning and architecture even attempted to mirror its natural beauty. As an example, look at Estes Park, Colorado and the downtown park running along the creek. |
| I was born in New Orleans and grew up in a 'Cajun' French culture. The Tucson culture reflects one of a types of cultures that reflects the ways in which I grew up. Rich in customs an food, architecture and ways of life. Respect for nature and customs. |
| I wish it were cleaner -- less air pollution and less litter. |
| I would institue a volunteer corps to clean up the city. |
| I would keep it cleaner |
| I would like to see more infill construction and more southwestern architecture |
| I would like to see more of an emphasis on cleaning up the city. Cleaning up graffitti, littering, homeless shantis along the washes. Getting rid of panhandlers. Cleaning up vacant, decaying buildings. Restoring Tucson's treasures not just tearing them down and rebuilding new ones. |
| I would love to see more pride and creativity in new architecture, more murals, public music, and any other ways which people can express themselves. This leads to more respect for other cultures and pride in the city itself. |
| I would suggest imposing fines on property owners who fail to keep their yards free of debris. They should get the message soon enough. And the $ from fines could be used to improve the roadway system! |
| I'd liek to see the schools kept in better repair. |
| I'd like the city to look better. i think we need an architectural look depicting the 'old pueblo', and this needs to be taken into account when granting permits. we have some gorgeous buildings in Tucson and these could be the model. next, the plantings in street center dividers often look as if there has been no thought to it. one palm tree might be 5' tall and the one next to it is 15' tall. a little more artistic talent would go al LONG way to making our city more appealing. |
| I'm sorry to say it, but Tucson is kind of ugly! When folks get to choose what to build and how, it's all but certain that not everyone will end up happy. But somehow it seems like everyone agrees that Tucson is ugly! Regardless of who is responsible for all this ugliness, it would be nice if we could figure out a way to get things looking a little more appealing for a change. |
| I've lived in Michigan and Ohio and I always felt safe and the neighborhoods I lived and worked in were always clean. In Tucson, I've had my car broken into, and we have an alarm system at home. |
| I've never lived in a place with more garbage thrown all over. I regularly see people throwing garbage out their vehicle windows. Fine those people and work to make a cleaner place for everyone to live. |
| If the public water supply was cleaner and tasted better we would have less of an impact with plastic bottles |
| If we have nothing that shows our past or adds architectural significance then there is nothing that adds ambiance to our community. Street after street of commercial signs and businesses won't do anything to set us apart from any other community. We are just an ordinary place and rather mundane at that. |
| Ill-maintained property |
| Impression of taking care of things that are taxes pay for |
| Improve Streets - Landscape (Just clear weeds and trash. |
| In all the local parks I've visited, all have been well laid out, clean and provide what I feel to be a safe place for me to exercise outdoors. The people I encounter also add to the experience. |
| In my appartment some people walk their dog in the areas where my son plays |
| In my area of mid-town, near Speedway and Alvernon, there is too much trash and grafitti. some neighbors and businesses seem to ignore it, I try to paint over or rake up, just wish everyone else was personally responsible. |
| In the downtown area and in many of the other streets it is something very observable in our city |
| Increase code enforcement and property clean-up |
| Invest in maintaining existing architecture |
| It could look so much cleaner, feel nicer inside |
| It creates a scary image. |
| It has deteriorated and not an attraction |
| It is clean |
| It is destroying the aesthetics of our area, the habitat of the animals, and the areas I enjoy hiking |
| It is dirty and broken down looking. |
| It is everywhere in Tucson, even in some of the nicest areas. It makes our beautiful city look trashy. |
| It is important for a city to be clean in order for people to live in it. |
| It is our city and we want it to remain clean and pretty and not waste money, resources, things, etc. |
| It is rich (architecture, history, music, food) and exotic to me |
| It is sad to see graffiti everywhere and no one takes care of their homes. Makes the city look blighted. |
| It looks bad and needs to be removed and prevented |
| It makes my neighborhood a depressing place to be except for inside my own home. It is also depressing when driving around areas that probably don't have a homeowner's association and you see the weeds, assorted junk around the house. |
| It may be too late for this. The architecture that makes Tucson unique has been desimated already. |
| It needs more keeping up - who is taking the responsibility to remove weeds and fix potholes etc.? |
| It seems that the City of Tucson has no common character, the various parts of the city have very different architecture, landscape, and traffic/pedestrian flow. It would be nice to have some integration and bring more of the Sonoran Desert into the urban areas. |
| It will affect everyone in the community |
| It would be a major improvement if we could get a larger clean-up crew in our washes and highway washes |
| It's always clean and livable in this environment |
| It's as if people have given up on Central Tucson. So many neighborhoods are run down and have to contend with disused buildings and neglected open areas and yards. |
| It's not too large. Downtown is accessible and fun without being so big that it's overcrowded and dirty |
| Junk in yards and in alleyways |
| Keep clean, why we moved here (Quail Creek resident speaking) |
| Keep it cleaner |
| Keep the City cleaner |
| Keep the environment clean |
| Kids are playing there and they will get diseases |
| LLitter |
| Lack of keeping clean/upgraded |
| Landscaping provides people with a feeling of serenity, especially native plant materials. |
| Less graffiti |
| Less littering, bottle refunds!! |
| Less trash on the roads |
| Less trash on the roadside and desert |
| Let's face it. There are parts of tucson that look dumpy-- a lot of parts. I'm no urban designer but let's make our city pretty. |
| Like clean wide roads in Tucson |
| Literally clean up the neighborhoods. |
| Litter pick-up and grafitti abatement |
| Littering |
| Living in a clean, safe environment |
| Local public and private businesses should support each other more. When I first moved here, I believe there had been a 'Tucson First' campaign. We need to do that again. Too much money goes out of town in all industries. It is particularly noticeable with large public works projects where architects, engineers and contractors are brought in from out of town. We have a School of Architecture and a School of Engineering at UA. Many of those students stay in Tucson after they graduate. Design and construction contracts do not need to go out of town. There should be extra points given to 'local' businesses like there used to be by government agencies when selecting design and construction companies. |
| Make it a better appearing area |
| Make it in general cleaner |
| Make the area along I-10 look nicer. Also make Stone Ave. look nicer. |
| Make the downtown Tucson area look more attractive |
| Makes downtown look dingy and attracts problems |
| Makes the home at large feel lived in and yet well-kept |
| Makes us want to stay and be part of the community and others |
| Making downtown brighter and cleaner would bring more visitors and help tourism. |
| Many neighborhoods and streets are dirty. there is trash everywhere. it not only looks ugly but it is not good for the environment. |
| Many of the streets are ugly and lack land scaping. |
| Many parts of the city do not present well to visitors - it looks trashy, unkept, neglected, too much graffitti, etc |
| Many projects were started but not finished. Rio Nuevo was badly managed. Get some competent managers in there and hire some local architects, engineers and contractors to build new attractions, hotels, etc. |
| Many streets have very ugly medians/shoulders/sidewalks with overgrown plants, weeds, garbage and are very bad eyesores. many roads desperately need to be fixed, especially around the airport, thats the first impression many visitors get. |
| More clean neighborhoods |
| More emphasis on architectural design and landscaping |
| More freeways and better public transportation. Different people ride the SunTran clean and dirty. The buses should offer disposable seat covers and payable entertainment like a plane. More routes too |
| More graffiti abatement |
| More interesting architecture |
| More trash cans |
| More trash pickup along major streets. |
| Most of midtown hasnt aesthetically or functionally improved in 40 years |
| Most of the TUSD schools, and public parks, have been fitted with the newer style of playground equipment. This is the safer option, but due to heavy use & sun exposure the equipment, slides specifically, crack & become dangerous. I'd like to see these kept in better repair. The PTAs & PTOs should be encouraged to raise money, hopefully subsidised by the city or even a greant, to help get shade screens for each jungle gym on the property. This would help extend the life of the equipment. But also important would be the repair/replacement of the cracked or broken equipment. |
| Most of the new developments in Tucson are right out of the Southern California playbook; no architectural style or sense of the desert. So are our commercial spaces. Ugh. |
| Much more improve center arena ( convention center ) with better acoustics for concerts, outdoor plaza for tucson events, world class architecture high rises, a biosphere high rise park, a world class tower, grocery store such as trader joe's |
| Need to reduce littering and trash (clean up along roads) |
| No cohesiveness in the architecture or layout of downtown, no noticeable rhyme or reason to why things are built where they are (i.e. TEP) and 'bad parts' of town in the middle of nice areas. |
| Not enough city clean up efforts |
| Okay, maybe this seems superficial, but I don't think it is: what is up with letting our streets, sidewalks and medians look like trash heaps? That says, in symbolism hard to miss, 'we are a trashy city.' What's up with spending money to design nice roads and medians, like River Road, and then letting them go to seed for two years before cleaning them up? Phoenix manages to have beautiful streets. I'm not suggesting the water waste of grassy medians and sidewalk landscaping like Scottsdale, but couldn't we manage some basic desert landscaping that's decently taken care of--the trash picked up (or not thrown out in the first place), and the weeds removed? Couldn't we make a push for keeping our streets and public places free of trash? I think this is more important than it seems, both for how we think about ourselves and our community, and what we invite the outside world to think of us. |
| Oro Valley is clean and thoughtful, not so in Tucson |
| Our city has a relatively clean environment, and I like that we are improving bicycle lanes and public transportation to keep it that way. I like the focus on solar energy and water conservation. |
| Our city is filled with parking lots and too much asphalt and I know that is mostly because of poor planning strategies from the past. Even still new developments, both commercial and residential, seem to take the cheapest and easiest route with too much blade and grade and not enough revegetation. Even the ugliest architecture/development can look beautiful with enough planting of native vegetation. |
| Our connection to aesthetics raises our spirit and improves our quality of life |
| Our main streets are UGLY! |
| Our major corridors don't look good |
| Our neighborhoods are a mess |
| Out of town visitors are often greeted by unpleasant images that reflect violence and lots of gang activity. Many S. Az visitors only see Tucson from the car and what they see is many areas of town is horrific. We must clean it up! |
| Particular architetural elements bring a feeling of calmness , a feeling of serenity to me. Southwest architecture / old Mexico brings me a feeling of 'realness' and grounds me. |
| Parts of Tucson are not appealing to the eye and it shames residents to admit they live here |
| People join together to just do it! Some of us just throw things but I've seen many walk over and pick items up to keep the area clean - great! |
| People taking more pride in the image of their yards and houses |
| Personal pride. A community's appearance is extremely important. Some part of the Middle East, Turkey, and Central Asia far cleaner than Tucson. We have a very trashy community. |
| Phoenix used to be a big, pile of nothing. Now it is an aesthetically interesting and beautiful community. We can do better. |
| Pick up the trash |
| Planning, architectural controls |
| Pleasant climate and aesthetically pleasing natural environment. |
| Pollution |
| Pollution/Graffiti |
| Poorly maintained properties with a preponderance of junk and refuse devalue neighborhoods, contribute to vermin, vandalism, and crime. Represent a lack of pride and respect. |
| Preservation/Cleanliness/and community |
| Preserve the desert - less gas. better more interesing quality of life. Less bad architecture and greed taking over small neighborhoods (I live by UofA) |
| Preserving history is great but not at the expense of leaving this generation's own style and mark. Creating architecture to mimic/fake the old buildings just to keep up the appearance of a 'historical' neighborhood only misinforms visitors & future generations. If it wasn't built to last then we should let it pass. |
| Pride in the City involves maintaining it clean. |
| Public littering/tagging |
| Put efforts into keeping Tucson safe and clean. |
| Quieter, safer, cleaner, etc. |
| Removal/control of weeds & trash. |
| Remove the graffiti |
| Remove trash and persure those who do not maintaain clean homes and busnesses. |
| Rio nuevo, all of it needs to be ended and all the free or super cheap rent for galleries and museums needs to stop and 4th ave needs cleaned up very scary and nasty!! |
| Run down areas. |
| Run-down look in many parts of town |
| SO many people do not maintain their yards. Weeds, junked vehicles, mattresses, garbage. ARGH! Why do so many people take not pride in their property. Why do so many landlords (slumlords) get away with not maintaining their property? Why are there not really any consequences to all those code violations we turn in? |
| SaddleBrooke is wonderful. Quiet, clean and active. |
| Safe,clean area, was gorgeous |
| Seeing older homes in turmoil is depressing. We should clean up the streets |
| Shabbiness |
| Signifies indifference and lack of respect for self and others |
| Sketchiness/run down look of some areas (improved aesthetics) |
| Slag heaps at mines are ugly |
| So I-10 should look nicer (walls all the way down) |
| So many undeveloped plots of land, within developed areas, look scrubby, unkempt, and dirty |
| So we can have our earth clean |
| Some areas of Tucson are not the most aesthetically pleasing as well as are not very safe to be in. We need to figure out how to address and aid our homeless population |
| Some areas of town are very dirty |
| Some areas/pockets of midtown are getting run-down and scary. I'd rather see the thriving neighborhoods expanding their reach outward to improve the areas around them, than the run-down neighborhoods expanding. Seems like the 'bad' pockets are growing. |
| Some aspects of Tucson need a major makeover. it looks brutal when you arrive from the airport or I-10 for example. For God's sake, can't we cleanup and beautify Speedway from the I-10 to campus, and similarly for Broadway/Congress into downtown. Appearances matter - make a favorable impression. |
| Some neighborhoods are so unsightly and dumps. |
| Some new comers to Tucson do not understand the importance of water or that this region was once part of Mexico. They don't understand or appreciate the native Tohono O'odham people or the interesting history of the Yoeme (Yaquis.) There is no appreciation for older architecture and there is sometime sacrifice of long term environmental degradation for perceived short term economic benefit. |
| Some of the greatest danger and biggest inconvenience is the glass and gravel in the roads. Imagine coming down Mt. Lemmon, hitting a patch of broken glass, and trying to hang on at 30-40 mph while riding on your bike's rims. |
| South Tucson needs to be nicer |
| Southwestern architecture wherever you can see it. |
| Spanish and Indian architecture |
| Streets are ugly |
| Tall highway advertising |
| The I-10 corridor is unattractive gateway to and through Tucson. An improved image of our community will help stimulate future quality development and prode in our community |
| The Mexican and Spanish architecture |
| The Oro Valley area - and master plan is what attracts me to the area. I want clean, maintained and safe community. I want services for young and seniors. I want a community that believes in quality. |
| The aesthetics of murals, downtown culture, fringey artistic culture, art walks and events, cultural events that include music, music being included at all sorts of events, the homemade feel of the artistic movement, run down areas revived by artists, neighborhood art projects, street painting, metal sculptures marking neighborhoods. |
| The amount of broken glass along streets and in desert trails is heart breaking. Seems to me as though there are alot of people that would take advantage of bottle refunds, thus decreasing the amount of bottles thrown in the desert. |
| The amount of dust, trash, and debris in certain areas |
| The appearance of the community is important for residents and visitors. |
| The architecture |
| The architecture and Spanish culture |
| The architecture and older downtown areas |
| The architecture, especially some of the older homes, are so unique. I wish there were programs for first time, or any buyers for that matter, to encourage revitalization. |
| The area around the airport and Raytheon should be cleaned up so that more people want to live and work nearby. It is the first thing that people see when flying in, and would give a much better first impression. It would also help to attract more businesses to the industrial area. |
| The blending of cultures and rich history. Architecture, great foods and traditions |
| The city does a great job with landscaping new roads with limited access and beautiful man-made cliffs. Commuting isn't difficult and always beautiful. |
| The city does not enforce ordinace codes within neighborhoods (garbage in yards, and weeds, etc). Another set of B.S. laws which mean nothing. |
| The city is clean |
| The city is run down, trashy, and filled with thugs. |
| The city looks like a mexico town, dirty, graffitti, weeds, run down, just generally tatered, used and worn |
| The clean sunny mountains and the natural environment |
| The cleanliness of the city |
| The commitment to keep Tucson environmentally clean is important to the current residents. Future residents will be attracted to that condition. The UA and associated research and clean industry will attract environmentally aware residents helping to keep Tucson clean. |
| The communmity is clean |
| The condition of some of our streets are atrocious. I realize we have budget issues, but letting our city become trashy looking and ruining poeple's cars is not going to help us recruit companies and people here. The main older areas of town could use some facelifting and cleanup, which would provide jobs and improve our economy. |
| The constant road and building construction that delays traffic. Needing to beautify the downtown area with things to do. |
| The cost of education on a college level has risen to the point where getting any degree other than a business or engineering degree is illogical because there is no way anyone earning a living could pay the loans required. Having an educated population is necessary because the more educated the population the higher the level of econ development and the higher the level of econ development the more aesthetic the environment and the mroe exciting the city. This is improtant because I like pretty cities and think people should live in environments as impressive or more impressive than the surroundings. |
| The cross cultural influences of Native American, Mexican, and Asian have contributed to local art, jewelry design, architecture, dining, dance and performing arts, all of which make Tucson a unique city and a great place to live. |
| The cultural opportunities, music, art, architecture, natural beauty and climate, the University of Arizona |
| The few and I mean few architectural structures that remain from previous generations, i.e. Agua Caliente Park, Arizona Inn, St. Xavier del Bac, the Temple of Music and Art, and what little there is of the Barrio. |
| The foothills are lovely as an area. The rest of town could use cleaning up and landscaping. |
| The general environment is clean and varied. |
| The graffiti, the junk/trash along roads/freeways, the weeds (not beautiful Sonoran vegitation but WEEDS) all over the place are in such stark contract to the ugly stuff. It does not fit. |
| The historic architecture, or what's left of it. |
| The lack of pride in our community shows with dilapidated properties, trash everywhere, graffiti, and rudeness. |
| The old landfills that exist along the base of A-mt. |
| The poor road conditions, decaying buildings, dead landscapes, and unsightly parking lots and businesses reflect poorly on the City. The City has a very shabby and scruffy appearance. |
| The smell at times can be overwhelming |
| The strips along Speedway, Grant, Broadway with all the weeds could so easily be spruced up. Plant some trees, CUT The WEEDS!!! Actually, just cutting the weeds along the roadsides would be a vast improvement. Mountain Avenue and Sunrise could be used as examples. |
| The trash |
| The trash people throwing everywhere either on the street or grabe on the estreet |
| The unique architecture |
| The unique personalities of neighborhoods which includes the architecture creates an exciting and diverse culture in our city. This makes Tucson a more interesting place to live. |
| The upkeep of the city |
| The way streets are all dirty |
| The way we preserve ugly intersections and property |
| The weather and cleanliness of the area |
| The whole area needs to be cleaned up |
| There are a good many 'clean industries' that can be lured here. As a 'right to work' State, that gives us affordable labor. Unions have been instrumental in our economic difficulties in the past, ie; Copper, Auto industry, Garment etc. . . No longer an economic force globally! |
| There are certain areas of town that look like they are falling apart. The Stone and Ft. Lowell area is one example. Iv'e seen large squares of dirt near houses. I wonder why the city can't beautify this? There are some builidings around town that look like they should be condemned. Our poorest people are the ones that live in places like this and it is not fair. |
| There are more than enough affordable events and locations to satisfy my aesthetic sensibilities. |
| There are some amazing people doing great things like the All Soul's Procession. (Sadly there is a lot more apathy there and it can do with a bit of change.) Some parts of Tucson look very run down and dirty, so if we try to improve those things then we can improve the overall quality of life in Tucson |
| There are some old, dirty areas of Tucson, and it makes it look dumpy. Appearances mean a lot to people, and I think some of the older, crappier areas of Tucson are a turn off to folks who would otherwise love living here. We certainly don't need to be Phoenix, but it would be nice to update and modernize some of the areas that look like they're from the 1960s - 1970s |
| There are some parts of town that could probably use some cleaning from littering and such. I can't think of any in particular right now, but I mostly see trash when I am driving and living in a clean, welcoming city is important to me. |
| There are too many vacant lots that are very dusty and unattractive and take away from the appeal of the city. |
| There aren't many places downtown for young professionals to meet and hangout. There needs to be more clean bars, coffee shops, and stores with extended hours. I think of downtown as a desolate wasteland of public buildings that maintains 'banker's hours' |
| There is a very small few-block area in downtown Tucson that looks nice and would attract people to events. When one ventures beyond that small, nice-looking area (which includes the Presidio and the barrio just south of TCC), there are vacant run-down looking buildings, and the area is not inviting at all - in fact it looks a bit scarey. |
| There is too much graffiti and trash along the entry corridors from the airport and from the interstates. |
| There should be incentives and grants to fill in the blanks in neighborhoods. In the neighbor that I grew up in there are now many empty lots. Empty lots drive down property values and chase families and their spendable incomes out of neighborhoods causing blight. We need an urban plan that would reduced the continued building in new areas on the outer edged of the valley. The new master plan should be designed to encourage the repopulation of neighbors. Encourage the cleanup of Tucson. Tucson is filled with trash, broken down cars, homes in poor repair, weeds, poor street lighting. It appears that there is little or no uniformity in the design of buildings or neighborhoods. Much more needs to be done to save water and harness solar energy uniformly among business and homes is a must. The city has the appearance of a hodge podge that nobody has give much thought about. It is as if there has never been the development of a comprehensive, careful, considerate plan for our city. |
| These areas provide recreational, scenic, and aesthetic benefits that can lead to health and happiness |
| They are very dirty |
| They do not clean them |
| They need to be cleaned up. Trash needs to be taken out, and it should look nicer |
| Third world appearance to companies wanting to relocate. |
| This bonds us and helps keep Tucson safe, clean and strong which can only help us grow. |
| This community deserves great architecture and landscaped plazas, walks and main streets that make it comfortable and fun to be outdoors year-round |
| This is important because it's good to live in a safe and clean environment |
| This is where I live and work. It has historic and architecturally-significant buildings which I appreciate. I also like the short commute time and how easy it usually is to get from one place to another. |
| This point benefitst the community as a whole. I personally would enjoy a safer and cleaner Tucson even more than I already do. |
| Through town, mines, trains, plants, and shabby businesses and housing run all along I10 which is probably where we all spend the most time in town. We could plant some trees, build some nice apartments or something. |
| To be aesthetically intrigued and nourished is of growing importance to me as I grow older. |
| To have the waste or garbage put elsewhere |
| To make it more attractive in architecture and shrubbery put out by city |
| Too dirty |
| Too much littering and graffiti is present throughout the community |
| Too often government departments as well as nonprofits adopt an unhelpful 'it's not my job' or 'we're not funded to do that' attitude and even policy. Instead of reacting to every new situation that comes up, our programs need to be proactive in terms of how they serve the community, relying less on a 'complaint' driven activity system, to one where staff identify community needs and design a process that continues to make progress toward a goal. If, for example, our goal is to keep the community cleaner and that involves requiring private property owners to keep their land clean, there should be a routine for at least a brief visual inspection of the entire city (on a rotating basis whether this takes a year, two years, or five). Get away from waiting for citizens to call and report or complain about things (or get discouraged because they don't know where to call) and simply focus on the task at hand and keep working on it. It's not exciting, but the results will show themselves. |
| Too sterile, must everything be colored tan and tourquiose? Aesthetically the colors and sterile atmosphere makes me not want to go there? More locally owned businesses. |
| Town isn't too spread out. The city is relatively clean, low in crime, bike friendly, and neighborhood friendly throughout. |
| Traditional architectural styles |
| Trash |
| Trash all over the highways, roads, fields |
| Trash and grafitti |
| Trash and unclean public areas |
| Trashy/rundown |
| Try to clean up some of the industrial area sprawl. perhaps restrict this activity through more deliberate zoning laws |
| Tucson clean cities (including Tucson electric vehicle association) |
| Tucson could be one of the jewels of the Southwest we have a great environment, nice people, and a terrific desert, but we have given it over to those who build cheap buildings, planned a road system which is increasingly unworkable, and ignore standard aesthetic designs. It's important because the gap between what Tucson is and what is could be depresses me. |
| Tucson could become more beautiful if we could clean up some neighborhoods of junk, etc. could be a volunteer effort to help those who need it. Also, let,s keep trash off the sides of the beautiful roadways. I like to see nice things, and I also like to volunteer to help others. |
| Tucson has a world class University. Clearly one of the prime reasons people are here. However, no matter which path you take to arrive at the campus, you are overcome by blight; buildings, property, equipment is disrepair. Speedway, for example could be a main entrance to campus from highway 10. If I did not live here, I would not have allowed my children to attend the University mainly due to the poor conditions of it's surrounding neighborhoods. |
| Tucson has been allowed to become a series of strip malls, each of which has a different design. As these malls age, they become uglier and uglier. While we do not have to be like Santa Fe, more emphasis should be placed on the beauty of the residential and commercial architecture. |
| Tucson has unique architectural traditions related to adobe architecture and spanish colonial architecture, as well as modernist and green-build architecture. |
| Tucson is Trashy, metaphorically, but mostly literally. People don't put their trash in trash bags, so a significant amount falls out of the can and blows around on the street the day after trash day. It seems like no one picks up the trash around their houses and workplaces. People also leave mini-shrines everywhere, then never clean them up when the items burn out, bleach in the sun, or blow away. People throw glass bottles on the streets and dump furniture in alleyways and throw cigarette butts on the ground where I walk my dog. |
| Tucson is a run-down and dirty city. You can't walk a block down the street without stepping over several piles of dog crap. People's yards are cluttered with brush and rubbish and run down fences or graffitied walls. Very few neighborhoods look taken care of. The city streets are really broken up and out-of-date. I generally don't think Tucsonians care much about their city, so they just don't bother to take care of it. It's really sad. I would create harsher penalties for defacing public property and use the funds for beautification. Certainly more emphasis and funding for beautification would be awesome, but I doubt that would ever happen. |
| Tucson is blessed with many creative people in the arts - music, dance, visual arts, architecture, theater and more. UAs strong colleges help support and nurture that creativity. |
| Tucson is made interesting and enriched by its numerous cultures, which extend in to arts, architecture, business, religion, cuisine, and politics. There is always something interesting to do here, from Tucson Eat Yourself to art openings. |
| Tucson is such a trashy town. |
| Tucson needs to look to business and the people that live here to clean up their yards, Parks and old historical building. There is such a need to make Tucson look like a clean and beautiful place to live. First impressions are lasting and when you exsist the Interstate and all you see is trash and unkept houses it does not make for a good impression. This is something that a city could have as a compain for schools, business and the citizen of Tucson and it would show the pride that people have for their city. |
| Tucson offers a wide variety of activities; the arts, sports, and lots of architecture! |
| Tucson seems more diverse and welcoming than other cities such as Chandler where I grew up. This is seen in the architecture and the community |
| Tucson with the exception of the older area neighborhoods and a few examples around town is unappealing architecturally and the standard examples make Tucson look unappealing |
| Tucson's crime rate coupled with areas of blight make it less attractive. There is a growing gap between wealthy and poor, and this will inevitably lead to more crime. TPD is a great asset to the community; leadership is concerned about people. But they become less effective when all they can do is react instead of interact. |
| Tucsonans value the desert and the environment in general. They recycle, pick up trash, adopt streets, and use the public parks, especially Mount Lemmon. |
| Ucson is a great place, but it has a reputation of being a bit 'run down.' We visited Tucson a few weeks ago and I was surprised that the streets were so full of litter, houses in various stages of needing repair, business that need to be cleaned up, painted, etc. |
| Ugly entrance into Tucson from the airport |
| Ugly streetscape like Broadway, 22nd, and Speedway |
| Unclean buildings/areas of Tucson |
| Underpasses are filthy. There are not enough public trash cans. There are no recycling facilities at apartment complexes. |
| Upkeep of land and property in parts of the city |
| Urban infill and architectural quality |
| Very clean and comfortable |
| Very nice area, clean and beautiful landscape. |
| WOW, what a horrible experience to have to go the dog pound. The stench is horrible, why don't we build the structure to be more like a barn with open air at the top (no one will be able to escape!) and the whole procees needs to be simplied to be people friendly. |
| We all feel better if the environment is clean. Streets, bus stops, sidewalks, parking lots. |
| We are the interface of native american, mexican and american cultures. Food/architecture/cultural opportunities |
| We either need cleaner parks or just more of them. |
| We have let our city decay and turn trashy. I do not advocate homogeneity, but I do think convincing/impelling the public to pick up their trash, keep weeds down, plant and maintain landscaped areas, etc. is important. In a wide-open desert area every bit of trash and decay shows. |
| We have trashed this side so long, its a shame. |
| We need stronger codes to insure there is some continuity within the region. This would apply to the architecture, signs, artwork, |
| We need to make it a high priority to clean up graffitti. |
| We should be promoting cleaner transportation options |
| We should preserve our architectural heritage |
| Weather - Sunshine for the majority of the year - ability to do outdoor activities such as running and biking on clean, safe paths. |
| Well organized and clean recreational facilities in order to most enjoy Tucson's natural beauty (mountains, desert, etc.) |
| What was the City of Tucson zoning and development review process thinking. Our post-WWII architecture is ugly and disorganized. |
| When I moved to Tucson, my wife said it was a dump. I told her it had character. After living here for a while, I agree with her, alarge chunk of Tucson is a dump. But it doesn't have to be. These same areas do add character but need to be restored in order to attract people to the area and give them a sense of security. |
| When I travel to other cities I often notice how nice their common/public areas are. We don't need large expensive projects neccessarily. Landscaping improvements and simply providing good maintenance on what we have would go a long way. |
| While some areas are nice, such as University Blvd, most of the area within a mile of the campus borders is run down. |
| Why does a city like Albuquerque look like it has way more industry and business than Tucson...same size but everything is nicer and cleaner and their are many bigger business...can poor little Tucson get none and they all go to Phoenix..... |
| Why so much graffiti? Get rid of graffiti -- it is all over the place. In general it makes the city look, for the most part, dirty. |
| Wonderful hiking, biking, and aesthetically beautiful area. I'm an outdoor exercise lover. |
| You live more comfortable in a place like this |
