Clean air

A long line of cars at 5:30 on many major roads just causes more pollution. We have fairly clean air now; let's keep it that way
A metro train would really increase the livability of the area and enhance walking, decrease pollution
Ability to exercise outdoors, not too much air pollution, enjoy beauty in desert around us, I love the desert and the great weather we enjoy
Adequate infrastructure will reduce pollution and traffic jams; it is essential to creating an adequate transit system for people without cars.
After a few years of being in Tucson without, I finally had to buy a car to get around. As population expands, more cars will only mean more congestion/wider roads. Clean, safe, convenient mass transit would free up lanes of cars, and prevent air pollution. More dedicated bike streets would help, too.
After living in large cities in California, Tucson is a breath of fresh air...literally.
Again since cars are for isolating yourself from your neighbors, and since they contribute to obesity, pollution, and repeated moments of detached aggression towards others, they should be set aside within city limits. Bicycles are all we need as an alternative to our legs and public transit. I've been doing so for almost three years now.
Air and Water Quality and quantity
Air pollution
Air pollution has health consequences. And litter is an eyesore that degrades the community for everyone. Graffiti falls under this category as well. I know we have some graffiti abatement programs, but there is still too much.
Air pollution is not safe - let's keep our air clean
Air pollution results as well if we depend on cars
Air pollution, noise, and traffic congestion will increasingly impact livability in the urban cores as population grows, if we don't change the transport model. This pushes higher income residents and employment to the periphery and leads to core blight. Reducing petroleum energy use is a national need.
Air pollution, traffic congestion decreases quality of life. We need a long-range plan.
Air quality
Air quality - relating to transportation and the environment
Air quality compared to other large cities.
Air quality from pollution
Air quality is important so we need to improve mass transit options - a light rail system would be fabulous. Phoenix has one, Albuquerque has one that goes all the way to Santa Fe - it can be done.
Air quality, higher insurance rates, preservation, quality of life - time behind the wheel
Air, climate, nature
All my physical activity I do out of doors. Hiking is a wonderful and free form of exercise. I love the scenery, the mild (for the most part) weather, and the clean air.
Allergies
Alternative transportation options will allow us to reduce pollution
Another environmental importance here. Why are we still using traditional forms of energy when we have sun 350 days of the year. Why are we continuing to spread our city out, which creates greater dependence on fossil fuels for cars, when we should be infilling? Why don't we have policy that limits lighted sign times (in other words, why is Office Max's sign still on at 3am)? It's personally important because I have to breathe the air and take in the unfiltered sunshine.
As a Los Angeles native i apprecaite no smog
Asthma is a real problem in Arizona with all of the smog
Atmosphere in regards to the night sky
Beautiful, clear views
Becasuse you have to have a healthy world, healthy lungs, and fresh air
Because I was to breathe clean air
Because they are beautiful, the air is better, and it smells good
Because we do not get much rain, air pollution is a bad problem here. it is causinf me health issues and cause trouble for my friends. it is also ugly to to dsee the reuced visibility when looking at our mountains.
Being destroyed and is in limited supply air quality preserve
Better air quality
Better public transportation is also an air quality issue
Blue skies and clean air
Building new freeways is NOT the answer. Light rail is a far better option. I have traveled to other cities that use light rail transport and it WORKS. We need to reduce the congestion and number of cars on the roads, not sell more cars. A light rail transit system, with satellite parking lots and connections to existing bus lines is very important for our air quality and our future.
Came from Calif regions with lots of air pollution, rain, cold, fog, and clouds (various cities), so I feel better psychologically with with blue skies, clean air, and mild temps for six months of the year. Hate summers!
Can breather
Clarity, no smog, appears to be not polluted or less polluted
Clean Air
Clean air
Clean air & no big industry pollution
Clean air - it was pristine here when I was a child.
Clean air ...
Clean air and blue skys (hopefully with no DM jets)
Clean air and water
Clean air for health problems
Clean air is crucial to our health and to attracting tourism dollars, and even to attracting businesses to relocating here.
Clean air most of the year
Clean air so I can see our beautiful mountains!
Clean air, beautiful vistas, unique landscapes, natural areas are personally invigorating.
Clean air, better drivers
Clean air, less polluted water than other places, natural surroundings, natural habitats protected
Clean air, mountain views, gorgeous sky.
Clean air, sustainable growth
Clean air, view of hills, Nothing over two story houses
Clean air- having now and for the future, Clean water- for future generations, preserving nature- desert mountains wildlife
Clean air.
Clean smog free air during most of the year is important.
Clean up the filthy air by maintaining dirt roads.
Clear skies
Clear skys
Clear/dark skies
Climate, relatively clean air
Convenience and pollution. Roads are more and more crowded. There is little ease in getting from one side of town to the other. Also, there is little apparent thought about making Tucson pedestrian-friendly. With the climate we have, sidewalks should encourage walking, not being so narrow and unattractive.
Crisp, clean air; blue skies
Cut down pollution/preserve unique feel
Diminished lung capacity from 50 years of L.A. smog ...
Driving affects the environment
Driving is expensive and it pollutes
Due to Tucson in a valley with three main ways to go, it creats a almost always a brieze from one way to another blowing away our smog. Totaly unlike the greater metro Phoenix area with a big bowl effect .
Encourage this often ignored way to reduce the carbon footprint, my cycle and I take less space, use less gas, emit less fumes and it is a fun way to commute and go downtown for fun (if one had reliable parking and did not feel bad taking up a whole car space).
Energy use and pollution
For many years, people have moved to Tucson because of allergies. because of the planting of foreign plants in the region, it's becoming difficult for people to live asthma-free
For over 20 years I have live in an historical neighborhood in the DM flight path. At times the planes are so loud that you cannot in your house and we have replaced the windows with double pane. They were not this loud 20 years ago. Sometimes are worse than others. I have been awaken at night by the flights (I mean midnight) I do not want the F35s here. Snowbird planes are a problem. I am concerned about the pollution from the planes. You can see the fuel raining down. I am concerned about crashes. I know DM is important to our economy, but maybe we should look to what Chandler did with Williams AFB.
For those of us that public transportation does not work for, the next best way to participate is to have synchronized lighting leading up to the freeway entrances to help cut down on the go-stop pollution.
Fresh air is good for the soul
Getting cars off the road and getting the air cleaner. Less stress, less pollution, easier commuting.
Good Air Quality
Great air quality
Great weather, beautiful mountains, clean air
Hardly any smog
Hate being exposed to so much pollution from cars when I am biking on main roads and increasing my breathing due to the workout. Add more bus routes downtown that are shorter but run more frequently
Have spouse with asthma, and we moved here from Southern California specifically for the climate
Health is better here, I can breathe
Health reasons; would not want to live in smoggy area; am worried though abt. growth and what this will do to Tucson's air quality
Healthy and beautiful blue skies during the day, and star-filled at night.
Healthy atmosphere (people, the skies/air, all of it)
Highways divide communities, create air pollution and traffic. highways make things seem far away and are intimidating for certain drivers.
I am concerned that Tucson keeps spreading out as people always want to live on the fringes of town. With the population growth projections, we soon won't have any Sonoran Desert or other natural resources left that give Tucson its amazing sense of place. These far flung communities create longer commutes for residents, and present air quality problems and traffic jams among other things. We need to bring down the cost of infill/re-development and raise the cost/impose greater restrictions on sprawl.
I am troubled that our community is so reliant on the automobile for transportation. It causes air pollution, stress (all those traffic jams!), safety concerns (no pedestrian eyes on the street as well as many auto crashes), and is a public health issue (not enough walking!!!). A major problem is underfunded multi-modal transit options. Our community needs to start giving greater priority to mixed use, higher density infill developments, walkable communities, more sidewalks, bus pullouts, shade trees, more regional bus lines, bikeways, bike lanes, and greater frequency of bus arrivals/departures.
I can see our beautiful mountains from anywhere in town.
I care about maintaining air quality and want to make our streets usable to all modes of transportation (besides vehicles).
I dislike the continuing sprawl that is soon going to link tucson to phoenix and leading to an increase in smog due to the necessity for people to commute long distances .
I do bicycle commute at times and I have to ride on fast streets and bumpy roads that often have glass and other trash on them. I would like to be safe while commuting and I think this would increase the number of bicycle commuters as well, decrease pollution and car traffic.
I don't believe in sprawl for so many reasons: gas costs, disconnects people from the center of town and community, builds congestion and pollution, etc.
I don't like snow, tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes. I don't like cold, I don't like the 'urban jungle' and pollution. I like it sunny and warm, I like the occasional thunderstorm, wide open desert, cleark skies, high mountains and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
I enjoy the chance to be outdoors most of the year. The air is clean, the mountains are beautiful and life is better outdoors.
I feel that massive efforts can be made to produce solar power here in Tucson, both bringing jobs to the area and reducing carbon emissions.
I grew up near Detroit and it has a stigma about that. The air hear is clean and the people friendly
I hate to see us polluting the air with so many cars on the roads...traffic congestion is bad for the lungs, and bad for the nerves! If we have to cross town to reach our daily destinations, why can't we have frequent and reliable public transportation?
I have chemical sensitivities so it is necessary for me to distill the water I consume. I, also, must wear a mask when I venture out in the city of Tucson.
I like the clean air and open skies.
I like the dry heat and sunny days. Tucson's air quality allows us to enjoy the weather.
I like the outdoor activities, the fresh air and the nice climate
I like to breathe well.
I like to get around - don't like the smog.
I like to walk at the park and look over and see the mountains - the reason I like clear air.
I lived in Los Angeles for a while. Pretty happy that my lungs don't hurt here.
I lived in Phoenix where the air was becoming increasingly full of nasty particulates. I like to be out of doors and breathe clean air. You can't put a price on it. It's more valuable than a pot of gold.
I love being able to be out of doors all year to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine
I love being able to have doors and windows open to allow fresh air in and to be able to go anywhere at anytime and not have weather be a limiting factor
I love feeling the crisp clean air in the morning and the walks are amazing and the sunrise is so beautiful
I love observing the stars without light pollution. Yes there is some, but the nights when it is clear and dark are particularly enjoyable.
I love that we have clean air, blue skys and beautiful surrounding mountains. The desert is amazing!
I love the desert and the mountains, the climate and the air.
I love to spend free time outside- enjoying fresh air, sunshine and exercise
I think Tucson is too spread out and as a result there is a great deal of pollution and traffic from cars. If downtown were more attractive more people will live closer to where they work and commute less.
I think it is important for the national security of our country to reduce our dependance on foreign oil. it also lowers the emissions and makes moving about the city more fun, if we had a rail system that we could jump on and off as we wanted. It is boring to drive in a car and sit in traffic.
I thoroughly enjoy being outside and I know that it is important that everyone has access to fresh air in a safe place. Tucson is woefully deficient in park land. Connecting the linear parks along all our waterways is a big step.
I want to be able to travel safely with my children on my bike wherever I go and right now that is not possible. I also believe that there is serious social inequity in where transportation dollars are spent. This results in an unhealthy, obese population, polluted air, degradation of the surrounding environment, and lower income populations being unable to ever get out of poverty because they are dependent on an EXPENSIVE auto industry. I would like to see the healthy choice be the easy choice.
I want to walk outside and breathe the clean air for me and my family - it rejuvinates me.
I wish it were cleaner -- less air pollution and less litter.
I would like to see a revitalized downtown and light rail installed along several corridors: Broadway into the city center from Vail, and Oracle from Catalina to City Center to Green Valley. People could then transit central Tucson using buses or shuttles. This would improve traffic and pollution levels.
I would rather have days at 100 with no/little humidity - than days at 80 with 80% humidity hands down. Also, becuase of our minimum humidity you can see for miles - and can take photos that look like they have been touched up becuase of the relatively lack of pollutants / yuck in our air.
If I could, I would improve the quality of the air and water.
Impacts to air quality
Improve air quality
Improved air quality
Inadequate roads and transportation cause air pollution which reduces the quality of life. Inadequate air transportation impedes economic development and ability of Tucson based businesses to operate effectively and economically.
Increased safety and opportunities to help reduce emissions
Increases pollution
Intensify education on consumption issues: water, driving, air quality.
Is the desert area, air is clean and blue skies
It has the many benefits of a city--research university, fine arts, convention center, museums, etc. without the big city pressure of traffic, congestions and pollution
It is incredible that the city of Tucson exists without freeways, expressways or without a worthwhile mass transit plan. This is not something to boast about. Poor planning leads to more air polution because citizens cannot get from point A to point B without being able to take efficient environmentally friendly transportation. Not to mention the amount of time that is wasted by Tucsonans struggling in traffic or waiting for too few buses and no light rail. The roads are in poor condition. It takes far too long to make repairs or improvements to roads and infrastructure in Tucson.
It is very hard to get from the west to the east side of Tucson. A better travel system would reduce pollution, reduce travel time, reduce road rage, etc...
It will be better for the environment if cars run more efficiently
It would be healthier if we were not all driving everywhere in our cars - cleaner air, more physically fit people, and more opportunities for socializing.
It's always nice here and it is important to me, to be outside and get fresh air and I can do that mostly everyday here
It's great having mild weather most of the year, although summers can be very long. While not retired, I am older so the mild weather matters alot. Sometimes dust can be a problem, but otherwise the air is cleaner than many other major cities/communities.
It's hard to get around in Tucson and streets could be safer. The City/County has not been far-sighted in planning for transportation needs of a growing city. Money is also mis-spent on transportation projects that are not important to the masses, specifically, am really against the Moder Streetcar. There are also way too many busses on the road carrying 0 to2 people, especially in the northwest. These routes should be discontinued. Likewise, the small SunTran buses do not have a big ridership from my observations. SunTran is wasteful, polluting and does not serve its purpose as currently operated.
It's healthier to have less pollution, to be able to see the stars, the mountains (I am concerned about pollution because I have asthma)
It's our life-breath: clean air and clean water
Lack of air pollution
Less air pollution
Light rails, better bus schedules, better traffic flow solutions (stoplight syncronization, throughways, overpasses, etc.) would improve the flow of traffic, reduce emissions, improve air quality, etc.
Lived in the cold snowy east. Glad I don't have to deal with that and that the pollution level isn't a major factor here.
Many major E/W and nearby N/S streets could be made ONE WAY. This would speed up traffic and cut down on pollution dramatcially. But the city council has no guts to even propse this
Mass transit and biking would improve air quality
Mine (Rosemont)- damage to land, water, air, not as much local economic development
More clean air
More driving of automobiles causes pollution problems
More hiking - encourage fresh air
More trees - for air and birds
Most of the people are very friendly and unassuming. They are a breath of fresh air.
Mountains and the clear blue sky
Mountains, clean air, beutiful locality
Mountains, desert, clean air, blue sky
Moved here because of allergies back in 1977 and clean air is important for health reasons
My grandchildren are growing up here. Step back and look at the big picture. Our education system is worse, gangs are rampant, air quality is disgusting. Set priorities and do something about it.
Natural landscape helps to keep air moving around Tucson so air quality is relatively good. Blowing dust is at a minimum, especially as compared to locations in Pinal County.
Nature's beauty and clean air
No smog
No smog pall seen in other urban areas.
Nothing like waking to birds singing and taking a deep breath with clean air and blue sky. What a great way to start the day.
One person per car is still the norm - we are polluting our air just to move a single person around
Open skies, desert and mtns
Our environment in Tucson is unique. The mountains and the desert never fail to give me joy. The many shades of gray and green after a rain, and smell of the desert when it rains, touch me deeply inside. I grew up in Tucson, in a house off Lester and Pima, and the smell of the desert when it rains, reminds me of that simpler and safer time. The dry air of Tucson, can only be appreciated when you have to go someplace where the bath towels don't dry overnight, or mold grows around the outside of the house. Sometimes our air is so fine, on a spring night with the orange trees in bloom, that it is almost like fine wine.
Our sky and air is cleaner than polluted Phoenix, making a more beautiful place to live and work.
Our town has excellent restaurants and food. The atmosphere is overall very clean and inviting to visitors. The Southwest flavor is the best. You cannot find Sonoran food and tortillas like in Tucson.
Please strengthen the protections for our desert, mountains, open spaces, skyline, air, water, land.
Pollution
Pollution and traffic reduction
Pollution is low
Pollution-free - good living
Pollution/Graffiti
Provides for a healthier living environment
Public transportation cuts down on air pollution and helps the elderly get around
Quiet clean air
Reduce smog and time spent in travel
Reduce sprawl, pollution, and congestion on the roads
Reduce traffic congestion, pollution
Reduce traffic; reduce overall impact and pollution
Reduced congestion (less emissions) is important for air quality
Relatively free of pollution
Relatively good air quality
Safety, fitness, outdoor recreation opportunities, pollution reduction
Scenic beauty; mountains, sunsets, flora and fauna, warm winters, dramatic summers, clouds and skyscapes. The fresh air, on good days. Breezes. The dirt. The desert. The heat, blistering heat. The color pallette and light.
Several reasons: 1. making the city more 'green' by reducing emissions that pollute our air (which isn't as clean as it used to be) and reduce emission of greenhouse gases. 2. Keeping Tucson a friendly, small-town-feeling place means focusing on people, not cars. Lots of people in single-occupancy vehicles doesn't build community. 3. Mass Transit/bike options need to be improved to reduce car usage.
Small town feel means no smog, no major traffic problems associated with big cities
Southern California has better weather, but, really bad air
Sprawl and resulting air pollution
Sprawl causes pollution, lung disease. Increases transportation times. Building road infrastructure for sprawl makes effective mass transit even less likely than it already is.
Sun and blue sky
Suntran makes it easier to get where you need to, and helps the environment by reducing smog and other pollutants
Surreal atmosphere: air, weather, people
Surrounded by mountains that I can see - Low pollution - active
That I can actually see them without the landscape being impeded by smog
The Air!
The Sonoran desert: it's flora and fauna and the dry desert air.
The ability to get out into nature easily, to see the mountains from my yard, and to enjoy the desert coridors that reach into our urban areas. I need to breath the clean air and hear the sounds of nature and feel my connection to nature. It provides a healthy touchstone.
The air is healthy to breathe most of the time and the weather allows one to be outside a lot and be active.
The air quality is great and I get to be with my family
The air quality, the dessert, and the surrounding environment make this a great place to live.
The air we breathe
The amount of cars on the road causes congestion a lot of the time. Light rail could help reduce emissions, and provide more of a cosmopolitan feel.
The clear air and open skies where one can see the stars at night are important after living in a big city.
The current noise ordinance allows auto repair shops to make as much noise as they want, regardless of their proximity to residents. My family has to put up with extremely loud noise and toxic fumes from an auto body shop located behind our house, Monday through Saturday. Tucson Police will not intervene.
The deteriorating environment--i.e., the pending water shortage, the sometimes poor air quality
The dust that results from these empty lots is bad for air quality and can affect everyone.
The entire environment needs to be considered and sustained so we will continue to have sunshine, desert environment, and not smog, congestion, etc. overcrowded
The good air quality
The mountains are very clear and they have clean air to breath.
The mountains, the sunshine, the (relatively) clear air & low humidity, the desert
The natural beauty and clean air
The natural environment (sun, desert, air, wildlife, etc.)
The noise, speed, and congestion on city streets are stress-causing. The pollution is bad for our health and makes our air look and smell bad. Auto collisions are a real and all-too-frequent danger in this city. // #4. Urban blight (the graffiti, vandalism, abandoned lots and buildings, and ugly infrastructure installments) is depressing, and results in residents having less pride in our city, and treating our community with less respect.
The non-summer months of weather, blue skies, and clean air
The one million population metro area is the perfect size - not too big and not too small. Big enough, and with a University, so have a lot going on, but not so big it is another Phoenix with its freeways, concrete and polution.
The openness and connection to nature and the sky, sunsets and sunrises
The stop and go traffic of Grant Road, Speedway Blvd., 22nd St., etc. creates tons and tons of pollutants, not to mention spewing asbesto from brake linings, into the air. An expanded route for a parkway or mini freeway would do much to clean up Tucson's air and get much of the gridlock off surface streets.
The traffic congestion is ridicuulous for a city our size. The pollution from long hours of stop-go traffic, as well as the human frustration of the many hours lost waiting through 4-5 light changes to make a left turn, reduce the quality of life, increase all travel costs, and regrade the environment.
The uniqueness of our Sonoran Desert. We have plants and animals that are only found here. The quality of air and light.
The warm dry climate, beautiful desert and mountains, and clean air.
The water supply will eventually fall short of demand if the city continues to grow. Traffic congestion will worsen, and air quality will deteriorate.
The weather -- clear skies, lovely sunsets, clean air you can breathe, evening breezes
The weather and air quality
There are a lot of walls and rocks to 'beautify,' but more palm trees and oleanders that green to me makes for a more beautiful scene as well as improves air quality
There are few places I've lived that make me smile as much as our beautiful sunsets and clean air.
There are three things starting to concern me with respect to living in Tucson, enough so that I have just begun thinking of moving which I don't really want to do and the first one is the air. In the last 10 years it's gotten really nasty. I'm surprised at the level of particulate matter that has increased. Like I said I like living outside a lot so I keep my doors and windows wide open almost all year with some exceptions. The amount of dust and particulate matter that can settle on the countertops and such is much, much more than it did when I first moved here. In one day everything now can be significantly coated with particles, almost enough to write your name in, that's in one day! It didn't used to be like that. Yes, there is always a dust issue here but I used to be able to go 5 days to a week before seeing this level of buildup so something has changed. When I think of that extra stress on my lungs it gives me the creeps.
This would reduce fossil fuel use and air pollution.
Time the lights so if you are going the speed limit you don't have to stop. would speed travel time and eliminate a lot of pollution
To breath
Traffic and pollution are more and more of a problem and this should be resolved
Traffic is crazy and will get worse...it is not safe to walk or bike along our major roads. It would also improve peoples ability to use alternative transportation to get to work - and improve our air quality if that happens.
Traffic, pollution, sense of community
Transportation and infrastructure affects pollution, growth, economic development, and desirability
Trees add ecological benefits, provide clean air, shade and look good.
Tucson has all of the entertainment value of a big city without the traffic, noise, rush, or smog of a big city.
Tucson has spread too wide, and therefore our resources are stretched thin, our pollution increased through increased travel, and our city core lost.
Tucson is a 'pancake city' which has unfortunately sprawled too far in all direction. This has grave consequences, i.e air quality (I have asthma so this is very important to me), the amount of our land covered by asphalt, both roads and parking (increases the heat island effect, among other negative impacts), we spend too much of our lives driving from our home to our place of work, and the manner in which our neighborhoods are effected, i.e. our neighborhoods are not walkable (in general).
Tucson is big enough to have everything you could possibly need, but small enough that traffic, pollution, and the 'heat island' effect are manageable, unlike that of Phoenix.
Unmanaged growth, i.e., sprawl, results in the destruction of natural environment, including air quality, which is one of our region's most important assets. Sprawl is also not conducive to community-building.
Urban sprawl - bad air quality
View of the mountains and surrounding desert areas will be lost to degradation of air quality which impacts all of us.
Waking up each day and viewing our mtns without haze and pollution-truly enjoying the beauty of nature
Want to see the sky cleaner
We are too spread out. Development needs to be more dense and we need more smart infill to improve sustainability - less water use, less air pollution, more preserved natural land
We badly need fast access, e.g., freeway where Grant Road is now, and perhaps a north/south express up Wilmot or Alvernon. Tucson is not Portland, it is a large , sprawling city now, but you can't move around it without much time and delay. A better infrastructure would facilitate business, tourism and cleaner air.
We can go places faster and it reduces traffic. Less smog/air pollution- trains are far less polluting than buses - and better.
We cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend we don't have traffic problems. Cross-town freeways would improve traffic flow, reduce polution, etc.
We could ensure the sustainability of our clean air and require fewer road improvements, if we all did not have to drive everywhere. I would use public transportation from a hub, if I had reasonable opportunities.
We have an abundance of sun - get rid of mountain top mining, all coal mining as its polluting our environment
We must look at places like Portland, OR, for some ideas to cut traffic and pollution in this inversion valley. We could have high-speed rail from Nogales to Phoenix, with other transportation off of that line to immensely improve our air and quality of life.
We need it for oxygen
We should be promoting cleaner transportation options
We're no Portland or Vancouver, but maybe we could be some day? There are people who want to save this place-water, air, solar.
Weather, low pollutants
Weather/Cleaner air
With the expasion of the larger metropolitan area, it is vital to expand and improve regional transportation to remove as many vehicles as possible from the roads. This will improve people's stress levels, air quality, and help form a sence of community as people meet their neighbors.
