Every great city has a multitude of mass/public transit options. New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. Whether you're a visitor or a resident, the ability to enjoy a city is directly correlated to the ability to access it easily. Cars are for moving about small towns, extended trips, and insulating youself from others; cities--and the people who love them-- deserve public transit. Cities are the people who live there. Public transit allows us to mix with our neighbors, learn from our neighbors, become less afraid of our neighbors. Chicago is not Chicago without the El. New York is not New York without its subways. San Francisco is not San Francisco without its street cars and the Muni/BART. If we had more public transit options, I venture to say we would have less animosity and more compassion in Tucson. And less pollution, gridlock, and rage.

From hiking to climbing to bouldering/scrambling, there are so many fairly easily accessibly places to take part in outdoor activities. It's a great juxtaposition with the more lively city life we do have. While I was living away from Tucson for a year, I definitely missed the ample opportunity to get outside. Currently, I prefer to spend my weekends outdoors, becoming closer with our surroundings.

I live on the north west corner of the Presidio area and to shop I have to go at least a mile and a half. Plus an city center should be a place where you can walk and find entertainment and commerce easily. I know! It's difficult.
I love a little bit of both. Plenty to do in town, but very easy to be out in nature regularly.
I love being able to drive up any street and see a mountain backdrop. I never take for granted being able to drive or bike just a few minutes and reach beautiful desert, riparian canyons, and getaway mountains. I enjoy being able to hike year-round.
I love being able to see 4 mountain ranges from in town. And I love that in 15 minutes you can be out of town and hiking in the desert with no city noise and only saguaros and other desert plants around you.
I love being outdoors--for exercise, for relaxing, for family get-togethers--and Tucson has tons of wilderness/semi-wilderness spots that are easy to get to.
I love getting out of town and here it doesn't take an hour's drive
I love having the ability of being close to nature
I love how close nature is to the city (in the city, in fact!)
I love living dowtown, working in the North side of town, can visit Mt Lemmon, Sabino Canyon or go to Mexico all within an hour away.
I love that Tucson is home to community college and a state university--making education accessible to diverse populations in the region including Hispanics, low-income, and first-generation college students.
I love that you can go from a cool, green climate, to a saguaro adorned classic desert landscape to an alpine camp site in 30 minutes driving from Speedway and Tanque Verde Loop to Mount Lemmon. That is a Tucson marvel.
I love the ease of access to a healthy lifestyle.
I love the ease with which it is easy to get to the WILD outdoors here, for all levels of fitness. Sabino Canyon is easy, as are some trails in Saguaro National Monument, but the Finger Rock trail and others are harder. PRESERVE THE DESERT, and the approaches to places like Sabino Canyon.
I love the great Mexican food resturaunts and cultural events that I have access to living so close to the border.
I love the mild winters (until this one) and do not mind the heat. I love being able to see and visit the mountains and the desert.
I love the mountains and the fact that you can get away from the heat easily during summer and experience snow if you want during the winter!
I love the outdoors and nature. To live in a city of this size and have it all so accessible and close to us is amazing and special. I seriously wouldn't live here if they weren't here. Seriously!
I love the outdoors. It is so easy to go camping and hiking from Tucson.
I love the views of the mountains, access to the out of doors, the clilmate and the desert vegetation.
I love to hike and get out into nature. I feel more calm and at peace when I am hiking. Having nearby trails that are easily accessible is important to me.
I miss seeing first-run plays and performances as they generally bypass the area and we get older shows that are less appealing.
I moved from an area where i had a variety choices for a quick meal, i really enjoyed the street vendors it was always fun and fast to have such choices
I need to be able to connect with nature, whether by simply looking at the beauty of the Sonoran Desert from my home / business.
I need to get out of the city frequently to clear my mind and the desert is so close and wonderful for this.
I really appreciate the fact that in relativelt little time, one can be in undeveloped rural area containing an abundance and variety of flora and fauna.
I take adult classes at U of A, Pima CC, attend the opera and ATC, attend sports events (U of A., Accenture matches) - all easily accessible within 30 minutes drive and affordable.
I tend not to socialize or attend activities on the other side of town because of the time involved in getting across town.
I think Tucson is too spread out and as a result there is a great deal of pollution and traffic from cars. If downtown were more attractive more people will live closer to where they work and commute less.
I think it's important for a region with a rich history to keep that history alive and accessible. There are many areas in town where it feels as though one is in an open museum. Ft Lowell, the barrio, etc. Very important these areas remain intact, and that we don't forget the diverse cultural influences here.
I think the city is just about the right size - big enough to have 'culture', and small enough that you can escape to quiet places easily.
I think this would make travel much easier for a large portion of the Tucson population.
I think we have a greater appreication of the past perhaps because of the proximity of the Mexican border the interconnected relationships we have we each other.
I travel a lot and I love going in and out of this airport, even though it's not convenient regarding direct flights.
I use a 4 wheeled walker and there are not enough sidewalks and the ones that do exist are in horrible condition.
I want to get around to more places without having to drive. better for the environment, easier, cheaper, less dangerous.
I want to hop on a bus and go to the mall or the supermarket, and I want to know that a bus will come by every 15 minutes so that I can do that. I want to go out my door and ride a bike or walk for pleasure without getting mown down by cars.
I went to U of A from 2000-2004 and have so many great memories from there. I still find myself there for a game, a run, or to go out to eat on campus at least once a week. A lot of friends went back to Scottsdale, Chicago, L.A.....after graduation. Most are jealous that I'm still here and so close to UofA. I just wish there were better jobs available here for U of A graduates.
I would like to be less dependent on a car here. One of the things that is so nice about downtown being developed is that you have access to many amenities within walking distance.
I would like to go to many of the concerts like Willie Nelson etc., but don't want to drive to what seems like a whole different city. The community center large arena is ugly and unfriendly. I'd love to see it gone and replaced with a state of the art facility like other more progressive cities have. Phoenix has done such a good job putting all its entertainment, arts and sports venues downtown and close to each other. We sure lost out there.
I would like to see more openess about city finances
I would spend more time downtown if it was easier to access
I'm an artist and enjoy living in Tucson because interactive art events are easily accessible to everyone. Events such as Tucson Meet Yourself, the All Soul's Procession, Carnaval and many other activities that involve and unite the entire community. These activities give Tucson a feeling of a close knit village rather than a large city (even though Tucson is now a large city).
I'm an environmental scientist and outdoor enthusiast; I like to be able to hike, camp, and enjoy the outdoors close to home.
I'm delighted by personal encounters with coyotes, javelina, roadrunners, and rabbits. I love learning about native plants and how to incorporate them in my landscaping. You can be outdoors just about anytime of the year.
I'm in a wheelchair and it's very difficult to get around with roads and sidewalks torn up
IN THE WORLD OF COMPUTERS IT SEEMS THAT BUSSES COULD BE PROGRAMMED TO MEET AT TRANSFERRING POINTS SO THAT YOU WOULDN'T JUST MISS THE BUS YOU WANTED SOMETIMES YOU CAN SEE IT DRIVE OFF.
Identity - unique culture and history, access to diversity
If I need a doctor or a mechanic or a good theatre show or a great bank or lots of access to tight knit groups it is all here in Tucson.
If I want more...., whatever.... Not far from California, Nevada, Texas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico. Easy traveling distance to many other wonderful communities.
If it gets to hot you can allways drive to Mt Lemmon to cool down and enjoy other scenery
If we can't get a freeway system, let's add a light rail system. I would like to be more sustainable and not drive often, but I can't depend on the Sun Tran. It would be great if I could take a light rail train to downtown on the weekends, or take the train to the mall, or even to some of the hiking spots in the Catalinas.
If we had a freeway loop, we would decrease the amount of truck traffic on city streets and increase the length of life of our streets. This would also allow us to have better, quicker access to businesses and services that are all over our city.
Impproves quality time
Improve access to medical care.
Improve access to mountians and desert areas.
Improved access to parks and libraries
In Tucson we have all 4 regions of mountains very close to us - usually within 30 minutes maximum drive time to be IN the mountain regions enjoying picnic areas and hiking trails or tram rides or sunset lookouts. You are never far from an outdoor experience!
In many other communities, activities that improve the quality of life are not accessible or not affordable. Tucson has a lot to offer from a lifestyle/quality of life perspective.
In our garden project here, we are making high quality and nutritious fruit and vegetables accessible to families
Incorporation or annexation by Sahuarita (access to government)
Increase access and improve all schools
Increase density and walkability for urban living
Increases access to education (jobs and entertainment, changing lives)
Interconnectedness, proximity/close together everything within 30 minutes
It allows me to get out of the city and into nature, hiking the trails, and enjoying beautiful scenery.
It has become harder to access the surrounding mountains and desert for the fences and private ownership. It is harder now to get high up (especially in the foothills) and be able to park and see the sunsets.
It has been a healthy economy, until lately. I need wild lands near my home. I greatly value the University. The climate is great.
It has to be more vibrant and alive, Weekends in downtown are not exciting. I know a lot is being doen to attrack neighbors to downtown such as 2nd weekedn in downtown. More people need to support the FOX theatre. I know more peopel who would not miss a basketball game, yet you have a live band performing at the FOX and they say it is too far.
It interrupts what you can do - for example it is difficult to network on the other side of town. It interferes with the things I'd like to do around town
It is 3 or 4 hours to the mountains or the beach
It is a beautiful region, the mountains are and the developing trail system are accessible.
It is a calming environment throughout the day. It makes it great to hike and not have to travel far before you can start hiking.
It is easy to become involved in so many groups and activities.
It is nice to be able to have balanced access to national/international brands in our community and also being able to dine and shop at a variety of locally-owned restaurants and small businesses that provide unique and regional items. I hope that this mix remains, rather than large out of town businesses overrunning our community to extract profit, or at the same time completely ignoring our area.
It is nice to have Phoenix close with its sports teams, shopping, concerts, but not have to live there. Tucson is also relatively close to San Diego which is another great place to visit.
It is possible to be in the city, with all it conveniences (and traffic) at one moment, and a short time later, be away from it all and in touch with nature in Sabino Canyon, or Mount Lemmon, or the Desert Museum.
It is pretty; beautiful
It is so close to drive 20 minutes and be in the desert to go hiking
It is tough to get around except in a car - I don't mind the bus and have ridden over the years, but not easily done for a working person, no other really desirable mode for more than a couple miles travel
It is very easy to leave your front door and enjoy the outdoors by hiking, riding your bike, etc.
It is within driving distance so if i need to get away colder places i have a place to go easily
It means less fancy clothes, just as much theatre, dining out casually, not far to go to get a good meal.
It offers me a chance to be very close (to Mexico)
It provides City ammenities while still being accessable.
It takes soooo long to get anywhere in Tucson! The traffic is ridiculous, and I feel like I spend most of my time in central Tucson because it just takes too long to go anywhere else
It would make the town more accessible and feel smaller. More sustainable
It's a beautiful place - within minutes you can be hiking in a canyon in total seclusion. There's so much to see and do and luckily weather permits us to get outside most of the year.
It's close to places I do not get to visit often, such as L.A., and Vegas.
It's convenient
It's easy to access the outdoors with hiking trails, sports facilities, parks.
It's hard to get in and out of the region (the airport)
It's important to me to live in a place that is naturally beautiful and that has access to outdoor activities (e.g., hiking)
It's nice to go hiking and not have to drive very far
It's nice to have it near but it's inconvenient because there are no bathrooms in the park
It's not too large. Downtown is accessible and fun without being so big that it's overcrowded and dirty
It's so easily accessible, even when one lives in central Tucson.
It's wonderful to wake up to good weather, to see beautiful landscape and to be close to a variety of beautiful environments within a few hours.
Its beauty, its easy accessibility, and climate. A ten minute drive to a beautiful hike
Its proximity to other neat places
Jobs in the community to reduce transportation
Just the right size. Easy to get around. know where places are. not overwhelming.
LOTS OF RURAL AREAS, NOT BIG CONGESTED AREA. EASY TO GET 'AWAY' FOR THE DAY FROM CITY TO MOUNTAINS OR DESERT OR GRASSLANDS.
Like mined people and ability to reconnect with nature daily
Like our natural surroundings, it's easily accessible and not at all elitist.
Like the access to university and all it offers
Like to travel
Limits access to public facilities
Live in a neighborhood, shop near home, do most things in tight circle, has a small town feel in a big place
Living in Tucson you can drive 20min to be in nature. Biking, climbing, are easily accessible
Living midtown, I have virtually no commute
Living on the East side, I find it a pain to get to the West side to buy things and attend events. If there were a more effective way to get across town that didn't force me to use my car, and didn't force me to sit in traffic for 45 minutes, I would do it more often.
Local officials are accessible - council members and supervisors are not isolated
Locating and gathering information regarding opportunities designed to lift the spirits, minds, and souls (bodies) of those less fortunate shouldn't be fraught with such difficulties and frustrations
Location
Location where the desert and mountains are easily accessable
Locationthings nearby
Lots of nature/desert around
Lots of open space - horseriding/biking (close to the city) national parks close to the city (it's a tourist attraction)
Love having the mountains around us - to see, hike, visit
Love the desert and mountains and our own ski resort so close
Make UofA activity more accessible
Make it easier to access park, walk, public transit
Make it easier to get acroos Oracle
Make recycling easier for seniors
Make some places more accessible for people in wheelchairs.
Makes transition from one's working life environment to calm possible
Making the President of the U of A more visible
Many diversified things to do and places to go that make an easy day excursion.
Many family members and friends want to enjoy the area, disability access translates into universal accessibility... this adds to our diversity, making things accessible to families with strollers and the elderly.
Mild conditions for year round activities. Proximity to desert and mountains.
Mixed zoning would integrate areas, thus making certain things more within walking distance for me during my lunches or while at home and decreasing the chances of having 'food deserts'.
Mobility encourages a person to get out and partake in the stores/events in the community.
More access of local food for everyone
More accessibility for the hearing impaired
More accessible public transit
More and better concerts- driving to Phoenix is too long
More businesses=Need for restaurant, now we have to travel
More consistent wheelchair and white cane friendly pedestrian walkways
More first run shows and entertainment in the arts.
More fun, and easy-to-get-to activities - better access for youth
More is not necessarily better. The indiscriminate development of the area is going to ruin the very thing that makes Tucson so attractive: its open and protected desert spaces that are easily accessible to all. But this desert ecosystem is fragile and must be protected from development and any other kind of overuse.
More lively nightlife so I don't have to travel so much
More things I can walk to
More ways to build support (meeting new people, access to sports)
Most everything I need is close by
Most things are conveniently close, but you still get the feeling that you are not in a huge city.
Mountains / wild space close to urban space
Mountains and Mexico (M&M) Mountains have great views, and viewing too. Fun to hike. Proximity to Mexico, a foreign country for a day trip or weekend.
Mountains and access to wild areas
Mountains and close location to outdoor activites
Mountains and easy access to them and the desert
Mountains and hiking/nature nearby
Mountains well used
Moved here from Alaska and while the summers are hot, the winters are wonderful. Proximity to good hiking and outdoor activities, even snow, make Tucson an excellent place to live, play and enjoy life.
Much of Tucson is new 'stick and stucco', lacking personality and character. Areas like 4th Ave, downtown and older neighborhoods should be treated with respect and maintained as heart and soul of the city. Accessibility to downtown is not user-friendly.
Multi cultural and racial regions means access to understanding the cultures, access to unique celebrations and access to diverse food preferences
Multicultural aspect of Tucson and easy access to big city stuff
My friend lives right across the wash and my mother wont let me go across becaue it is unsafe
My neighborhood is conveniently located with easy access to other areas.
My work, my family, places to shop
National Forests and Parks are close.
Natural areas that are close
Natural beauty of our region and the ease of accessing it
Natural places close to city
Nature - not hard to get to the natural environment
Nature access
Nature is close by... I have a home in midtown area and one in 3 points. The best of both worlds
Nature is important to us and we recognize a need to protect and enjoy it. We spend a lot of time commenting on our beautiful mountains, sunsets and skies. We are aware that other people value our beauty. Sometime we are willing to exploit our good looks for personal gain, however. I spend a good deal of my free time hiking and enjoying nature. I would not want to live in a city where I could not go out into the wilderness.
Near Mountains
Nearness to Saguaro National Park, state parks, surrounding desert, opportunities for outdoor activities.
Need access to the bus stop on the other side of Oracle and there are no stop lights. It's difficult for a person with disabilities
Need cross walks in the middle of the roads for disabled. We can't walk to corners to cross
Need more coordination of buses. It takes 2-3 buses to get to the grocery store. The sidewalks need to be better all over the city (but they are being improved all the time). Crossing the streets is very difficult in a wheel chair; to get across 4 lanes of traffic. The island in the middle of the road has a lip on it and is not handicapped accessible
No matter what you want to do, it is within reach from Tucson. Arts, outdoor recreation, social events, opportunities to volunteer, and access to most anything you need.
No matter where you are living in most of Tucson, you can reach a relatively intact portion of the Sonoran Desert Biome in about 20 minutes.
No matter where you live in this community/region you can tie on some shoes and take a walk; hike a canyon, trail, or the side of a mountain; cycle; run; or meet in a park to get a little exercise. Fresh produce is availabe at Farmer's Markets around town and all of the local stores offer wonderful produce as well.
No transparency or accountability. We have two poor systems of government operating ineffectively in the same valley (city & county)
Nonmotorized recreation and open space nearby
Not a long drive to get to the beach and the mountains
Not enough access to cheap, healthy food
Nothing is more than 30 minutes drive.
Offers a variety of community and cultural experiences and is close enough to Phoenix, making most everything else available as well.
Often need to go places.
On the south side of town there is very little access to cheap food aside from Food City
Once again, DIVERSITY! We have the harshest, most inhospitable, yet beautiful native habitat. Yet within a short distance, a pine forest, coastal region etc. . .
One of the few places you have such beautiful desert, close mountains, and varied environments
Only 4-6 hour drive to get to the ocean
Open space and living close to municipal services
Open spaces near town
Openess of the mountains and the sky, proximity to outdoors
Opportunities for hiking and moutain biking close to home. Close to wildlife and nature. Protected scenic views.
Opportunity to re-create in the most beautiful settings on the planet - easy access to more beauty, well kept grounds, etc
Options
Our environment ... and easy access to trails and mountains ... is what sets us apart from our neighbor to the North. We must protect this beauty to preserve that which makes us special.
Our mountains are beautiful and it is easy to get out of the city to hike and enjoy nature
Our mountains surrounding, both views and access
Our proximity to mountains, open areas, other towns in southern Arizona
Our proximity to some of the most wonderful places on earth makes Tucson a gem in the desert. I have often said that I can take a protractor, draw a seven-hour driving circumference around our city, and have a great weekend in a beautiful place, easy peasy.
Our size and proximity to the natural world.
Outdoor activities close to home
Outdoor recreation is just out the back door. The wonders of the desert are all around us for our enjoyment.
People in Tucson need to be able to get to certain locations at specific times.
Phoenix is an ever growing leviathan that long ago outstripped its self-sustaining ability. Tucson has outstripped its ability to self-sustain as well but because we are a smaller city, we have a much better chance of changing that. We can be a model of sustainability, health and self-sufficiency for the rest of the southwest if we just take the time to understand we don't need to be like Phoenix or other large cities. I like Tucson because it feels personal and accessible. I like Tucson because I can get out of it in less than half an hour.
Physical and spiritual access to the natural environment
Physical surroundings and access to southern Arizona.
Please, let's not turn into LA or Las Vegas; build on healthy, sustainable living. The thing that makes Tucson special for me is the natural beauty, the easy access to open spaces. People are important, but so are the native plants and animals that have called this basin home long before we arrived.
Presence of University of AZ - exposure to science, astronomy, the arts, and accessibly to same
Prevalence of nature trails and hiking paths
Prioritize quality education and make higher education accessible for low income.
Private and charter schools are the wave of the future, provide more choice for parents and students - and charter schools are available to all in the community regardless of income
Provide greater accessibility and walkable areas throughout the region
Proximity & accessibility to forest and desert
Proximity and active and passive access to outdoor opportunities, both natural and developed
Proximity of Health Care facilities
Proximity of a major university

Proximity of mountains and desert
Proximity of the beautiful, untarnished mountains

Proximity to natural environments and beauty visible from town
Proximity to nature
Proximity to nature and its resources
Proximity to open space and wilderness areas.
Proximity to outdoor activities
Proximity to services, culture and education
Proximity to the Great Outdoors
Proximity to the Sonoran Desert.
Proximity to the U of A
Proximity to the US-Mexico Border
Proximity to the university and what it offers (music, arts, cool science stuff, young people and more diversity)
Proximity to the west coast and Mexico/So America
Proximity to unpopulated beautiful terrain
Proximity to wilderness
Proximity to wilderness/hiking
Public Transportation Access
Public lands accessible (mountains, parks, trails, etc.)
Quick access to trails
Ready access to the natural environment
Reasonable airline and interstate road connections
Recreation opportunities abound close to town
Relatively easy access & nearby
Restaurants, galleries, theatre, places to walk around-all downtown and close to each other
Road avaliability, I-10, I-19, Oracle Rd., Speedway, Broadway, 22nd St., Ajo, etc.
SINCE I CAN'T TRAVEL A GREAT DISTANCE IT IS A TREAT TO GO TO THE CASINO AND COOL OUT.
Safe and accessible hiking and walkways
Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Forest, county and city natural parks, recreational access and importance of nature preservation
Seems very limited in scope. Out in Vail, if someone car breaks down and they don't have a 2nd car, there is no way to get to work (that I'm aware of) - be it train or bus.
Services at neighborhood centers have been cut to the bone. It is not even possible to access the centers for neighborhood activities. Recreation activities that are not paid for by outside interests (Soccer leagues, baseball leagues) are now non-existent.
Shopping convenience
Shopping locally is very important to me
Size, big enough to have all I need, small enough toi be accessible
Small pockets of communities or everything that interests me. All I have to do is look, and there is a club that exists
So close to nature
So great to be able to go hiking in a pristine, natural desert within minutes of my central Tucson home.
So many more individuals and families, as well as businesses and governmental agencies would be better of it it were easier to access roegular medical care for ear infections, strep throat, minor fractures, sprained ankles. Thank how much better of people would be if they could get treated and get medicines without hassles. AACCESS is a cruel hoax. People with no income, or $500 permonth income are dropped regularly, denied care, and forced to reapply every coiple of months, and that was before the current draconian measurees were being discussed.
So much public land here and it's fully accessible
So people can get together easily and work and play together
So you don't have to waste gas driving all around town to go to one store
Some are hard to access from major roads
Something is always going on and things like The Loft, the University, the Tibetan monk who does the mandala the last couple years, the Festival of Books, and all of it being in reasonable reach are wonderful
Sonoran desert / Nature close by
Sonoran desert, mountains, the ability to access it with relative ease.
Stunning mountains, close proximity of different landscapes) accessibility to mtns
That a national park it close to a major metropolitain city. It protects the state's namesake cactus
That we are close to the Mexican border
The Tucson community is surounded by natrual beauty - the mountains, the arroyos, the saguaros and other features. Open space, access to nature, opportunities to enjoy nature - are one of the areas greatest features and needs to be preserved, with access and opportunities expanded. (Closing state parks is not a positive step)
The UA provides so many varied events and activities. I can walk the campus and enjoy it's beauty (the arboretum is amazing!). I can attend a high quality, nationally renowned performance (i.e. Wicked!). I can visit the State Museum. I can see student productions. So much is there!!
The ability to access these areas within a short duration to maximize weekend and vacation visits.
The ability to access trails quickly and easily.
The ability to escape heat in summer months, and the vista provided year around.
The ability to get out into nature easily, to see the mountains from my yard, and to enjoy the desert coridors that reach into our urban areas. I need to breath the clean air and hear the sounds of nature and feel my connection to nature. It provides a healthy touchstone.
The ability to go from the city to the mountains for hiking and recreation.
The ability to see cactus, yet drive 4 hrs and see snow
The ability to take two hours 'vacations'
The ability to walk and bike to most destinations
The access to nature.
The access to outdoor activities
The accessibility - Grant and Oracle intersection is bad
The accessibility and variety of fun things to do
The accessibility of nature.
The accessibility to our natural resources the mountains and arid desert is a demonstration of our communities commitment to preserving our gift of the land.
The availability of a multitude of golf courses
The availability of a variety of cultural, recreational & affordable resources.
The availability of and proximity to natural open space areas. It's also important that when I go to these places, they aren't overly crowded.
The availability of park space for everyone's use
The beautiful environment and access to nature
The beauty of the desert and mountains is accessible to all.
The big sky, desert to mountain access, hiking and camping, weather.
The bike trail that winds along the I-10 & wash between Grant & 22nd street - now paving north up to Ruthraff- great path! easily accessible-
The close proximity of the people
The continual visual access to the beautiful mountains, the easy physical access to beautiful natural sites. The year around possibility for out door activity and bicycle commuting. The year around possibility for out door activity and bicycle commuting
The convienence I have with my parents
The diverse nature of the area allow all of the necessary services to be available without the crush of a bigger city
The easy access of desert and mountain trails
The energy and feel of gathering together to do something active. I am a bike cyclist and generally try to commute my 10 mile distance to work. People who are advocating for more community and accessibility and public space are the ones who also push for safer and better bike use. Also, with events like Maynard's, there is a shared effort by the business community to support and grow the use and enjoyment of downtown.
The fact that we live in a community where most feel it is important to not only plan for development in the future, but doing it in a way that protects the beauty of this area. One of the important reasons I like living here are the natural open areas that are so close to where we live and accessable.
The flatness of the desert lends itself to easier accessibility to homes and businesses yet I can see the mountains and drive to them.
The food is amazing and a wonderful way to introduce people to a new culture - epsecially if you've never lived in a region that has access to these types of foods and cooking methods.
The less traffic the more city is accessible to me (less expensive, less time, more entertainment and fulfillment in life; less anxiety)
The library, markets, parks, everything I need is close.
The metropolitan area has close access to natural areas that can be enjoyed in many ways.
The mountains and desert and close proximity to multiple trails of multiple distances. I'm a runner and hiker.
The mountains are beautiful reminders that an escape from the city is a short trip away, and the expanses of desert provide welcome relief from the urban sprawl.
The mountains are close by & you can get away from the city easily.
The mountains in the region are close enough to visit and use recreationally - but they are also amazing to see from the valley and provide a sense of place and physical direction. This is one of the few places in the world where I can tell where I am based on the mountains.
The natural beauty and access to nature
The nearby mountain ranges and other natural areas.
The proximity of Mt. Lemmon
The proximity of nature
The proximity of the mountains
The proximity to the mountains, desert, city, rural landscape - all are within 20 minutes.
The proximity to the natural world & wild places
The ready availability of culture, nature, diversity.
The reason I remain in Tucson is because of the hiking and biking opportunties that abound around the city.
The relative ease of and accessibility to various city locations e.g. the library, government agencies, parks, events, medical facilities... to name a few
The representation of the arts. Even though it is meager it is varied and accessible.
The scenery around Tucson gives it a personal touch. The Rincons, Catalinas, and Tucson Mts help give Tucson character, while many other areas offer Tucson escapes from pure cement areas.
The town is small enough and we close enough in (Sam Hughes) that we can be downtown in 10 minutes
The university brings in new people and ideas. The school fosters new artists and business leaders. Without it..we would still be in caves.
The upland Sonoran Desert ecology is unlike anyplace in the world. So much of the environment is accessible and close by making it easy for people to interact with the physical beauty of Tucson.
The weather, the close proximity to nature and outdoor activities
The well protected and easily accessible wild and wilderness areas close to such a large city allow all citizens to keep in touch with the plants, animals and environment from which we evolved and retain an appreciation for the fragility of our environment and the need to honor and protect it
There are a lot of different kinds of outdoor recreation that takes place due to the decent weather the majority of the year an open areas near the city.
There are areas of the region where parks and libraries are easy to access - but voids in other parts of the region where there are not these services for students and families.
There are many access issues for the disabled which are not enforced locally. Engage the disabled community in discussions about improvements to parks, recreation, transit etc.
There are many great options for outdoor activities within driving distance to central Tucson. Also, Mt. Lemmon is a great and quick get away from the summer heat.
There are many things of interest in Tucson and the layout of the town makes access to them easy.
There are natural light rail corridors which would make travel easy and open access to downtown from Oro Valley, Marana, Vail, Sahuarita, etc. Most areas have vibrant development upon such corridors.
There are outdoor recreation areas available in all directions. I can hike, bike and horse back ride. I have lived in East Tucson and West Tucson. Both have easy access to lots of outdoor recreation.
There are plenty of things to do in the area without having to travel very far. Basically, you do not have to travel to Phoenix for shopping, services, etc.
There are some areas in town that have a lot of drugs and safety issues. I think Tucson needs to focus on these issues because it will help the greater part of our community. For example, I live at Alvernon and Grant. This intersection is AWFUL. It's full of big box stores and there are many drug arrests in the area. However, I love the location. I am 5 minutes from the Rillito, 10 from St. Philips plaza, 5 mins from Trader Joes, 2 mins from the Botanical Gardens, etc. This is such a great area of town, but the crime is holding it back. I am certain there are other areas with this concern as well.
There is more personal interaction with people, including those who are in important positions; easy access (small airport)
There needs to be better connections from residential to commercial areas
There's a lot of natural beauty here, with the mountains so close. Mt Lemmon is close and gives us a different type of beauty.
These are accessible folks who care about Tucson and have a tough job with little compensation but care enough to give it all of their attention.
They are beautiful and so close
They are places to escape city life
Things are convenient, dress is casual, it's easy to get outdoors, people are friendly and open.
Things that used to be easily accessible are now closed or paid-for. It inhibits peoples' use of the facilities
Things to do and see as well as shopping are all witin a short drive.
This adds value and beauty to this area that I live and work. It allows me to feel as if I'm living far away from town, when in reality I'm minutes from downtown. I like not having to drive hours and hours or huge entrance fees to go hiking or to enjoy the Tucson mountain areas.
This allows us to enjoy the natural environment we live in for the majority of the year without extensive preparation. Just get out and enjoy it.
This creates a connection to nature and promotes sustainable living, plus offers healthy lifestyle choices
This desert is unlike any in the world. Along with the close proximity to the mountains, the exposure to a variety of ecological environments are unique.
This is a great city for trying to leave - easy airport in and out, can take road trips easily to lots of places. Easy weekend trips
This is more TUCSON than the rest of the 'region' but I value having a neighborhood where we interact and talk to one another, we have places to walk, walk our dogs, and have facilities (markets etc) within walking distance and these facilities are at a scale where we don't need to take our cars to lug our big boxes home afterward. I also value the cultural diversity in our neighborhood this diversity is something to be celebrated not something to be scared of.
This would make it easier for me to experience Tucson
This would make more parts of the city more accessible to more people.
Though I am not a big hiker, I do appreciate being able to go exploring and camping with just a short drive from my home. Astronomy is my hobby and I love Kitt peak and the science community that is built up in Tucson and the amazing scientific achievements from the University of Arizona.
To drive from one area to another you have to travel umpteen miles out of your way to get to where you are going. Example from Camino Loma Alta to go to the Houghton Corridor I can go down Old Spanish trail to Escalante down to Houghton then back down Houghton. Or I can go to Mary Ann Cleveland Way down to Houghton and then back up Hougton.
To have the natural environment close and accesible is nourishing
Trails and access to the desert
Transportation/access
Tucson has a climate that enables me to never shovel snow again. I enjoy the proximity to mountains and the various seasons that allow for outdoor activities.
Tucson has a nice weather where you don't have to suffer from snow and if you want temporary snow you can do to the Mountains
Tucson has a very wide assortment of art and cultural activities and options that are generally reasonably priced and accessible to everyone
Tucson has great music, theater, opera, art -- and these are accessible without a long drive or struggle to park.
Tucson is a great place for food. There are so many choices (and healthy choices!). I also really appreciate the slow food movement in Tucson. With chefs like Janos Wilder, the Tucson CSA, and several farmers markets we are making our access to food more secure (and delicious!).
Tucson is easy to live in. Modest cost of living. Great weather and many cultural and recreational options exist and are easy to get to. Culture is laid back.
Tucson is small enough that it doesn't take too long to get anywhere yet big enough that it has most everything you need.
Tucson is wide open, easy to get around, and we have a multitude of mom and pop businesses who realize the importance of knowing their clients, and participating in the community.
Tucson needs to be accessible to everyone
Tucson seems to be a diverse town in several ways. Our proximity to the border allows for a strong Hispanic community. Our climate allows for retirees to come here from all over the country. But Tucson also seems to have more political diversity than other towns in Arizona. This diversity is a strength that has yet to be developed.
Tucson's proximity to a diverse landscape and environmental setting is the main reason I moved here. The mountains and wilderness surrounding Tucson are one of the biggest assets, and I would not live in Tucson without them.
Unique natural environment close at hand
University access
Urban living with close proximity to public land/wilderness
Urban yet easy to get out in nature
Variety of day trips that are possible
Very accessible natural environment
Very convenient and casual. Easy to access and quick to deal with
View scape and accessibility of nature
Visual and real access to desert and mountains
Visual beauty, 350 days of sunshine and access to the desert
Want to maintain the environment near Tucson, keep it close and accessible
We are fortunate to have access to music, dance, and theatre. Art enriches our lives and helps us have a better understanding of the human spirit and intelect.
We are having to spend our money for entertainment away from Tucson
We can go where we want to go
We can visit children and grandchildren with minimum hassle
We have access to wild areas, hiking close to the city. We have wild life in town. We do not need to go far to enjoy an outdoors wild experience.
We have accessible wildlife because of our parks and bike paths
We have economic barriers to access to healthy food
We have fabulous recreational opportunities here within a one hour drive - Mt Lemon, Madera Canyon, Sabino Canyon, the Tucson mtns, lots of parks, the river walks, bike paths, Fantasy Island. Its easy to get outside and enjoy the outdoors quickly.
We have high quality services throughout the community that are accessible to everyone.
We have saved and treasure our natural beauties surrounding our area. There are alot of people who live here who are committed to saving the land from cement and houses. I love being able to drive 15-20 minutes and I am in the beautiful dessert taking a hike.
We live here for access to the desert and the mountains. If Rosemont and other mines destroy those venues, why stay?
We live in the NW Tucson area and can walk along the washes to maintain a sense of nature from our house. KEEP green space and undisturbed areas. I've lived in big(ger) cities on both the East and West coast, which have become giant parking lots. Tucson still has the desert appeal.
We moved here from Los Angeles in 1993; in Tucson everything is close, roads are in a grid pattern, you hardly ever have to get on the freeway unless you're going somewhere else. Work, school, shopping, etc. are all within a short drive or walk.
We must pay attention. The services, both for profit and not for profit, for seniors are not going to be adequate in the near future. We need to make it easier for seniors to receive the care, attention and access to services, recreation, healthcare and support that they will soon need. I'm not there yet but heading there full steam ahead.
We need to build some higher density housing closer to the center of town, instead of sprawling out so much. that would go with the transportation, and help us create more culture.
We need to make education a priority--make it higher quality, and make it accessible to all no matter income or documentation status
We want to keep Tucson a place that offers good jobs so we don't lose talent. If we offer good jobs, good school a vibrant downtown and acces to teh art, Tucson can be a great place to stay.
We'd like to do more short trips without eating up so much time to and from. It can make a three-day trip from a one-day event.
What about access to mental health care as well?
What has always appealed most to my about Tucson is its proximity to the desert, its relative isolation ('desert island mentality'), and its position as an international gateway. Recent policies in this country have, unfortunately, altered the ease and friendliness of international cooperation and views; however, the fact that Tucson is one hundred miles or more from another urban area, and that much of the land surrounding it is Federal land, open and protected, continues, for me, to be a large draw.
What more is to say. The mountains can be seen from everywhere, and provide relief from the heat. A short trip in any direction gets one out of the city and into the country.
When you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you don't have far to go.
Wilderness areas close by
Wildlife out my front door
Will encourage development of downtown and access between campus and downtown - student housing downtown
With a short radius of Tucson you can go to anything from the Opera, beach or snow skiing. It really has everything you want.
With such a vibrant Hispanic and Native American communities, there is no shortage of opportunities to learn about other cultures.
Within 15 minutes you can be in the environment, in nature
Within a short 15-30 min. dirve time you can get our of the city and into nature for hiking, biking, etc
Within two hours or less of almost pristine desert, grass lands, oak forest, pine forest, etc.
Work with the University of Arizona to make it more accessible to local residents.
Would prefer to live in a smaller community (like Sierra Vista) but having the ability to get to a bigger City as part of a day trip. I can live in Tucson and travel to Phoenix when I need to experience the big City. Would prefer to live in Sierra Vista and travel to Tucson or Phoenix when I need the Big City 'feel'.
Year round outdoor access to parks and recreational activities are important to a healthy community. Equally important is the accessibility to higher education at the community college and university level.
Yes the summer heat gets old in August, but I like the fact that in the winter I can go skiing on Saturday and then work in the yard in short sleaves on Sunday.
You can access everything from farmer's market to high end retail all in one spot
You can be exposed to a variety of cultures, religions, socioeconomics, etc without having to try very hard to do it
You can be in a city and get out of it into nature
You can be in the mountains in a hour, access to lakes and four hours from the ocean,
You can drive to someplace, it's comfortable. I can drive to Mt. Lemmon and it's cold, then drive south and its' completely different. I walk outside and I see coyotes
You can get all of the benefits of a big city social/event life w/ a short drive to Phoenix
You can go to parks and hike within minutes of downtown
You can snow ski and play in the swimming pool on the same day, visit historic sites, get to places that are off the beaten track to have some isolation (if you need it!)
You can't enjoy camping, hiking and riding in the surrounding mountains and desert as much if you can't get to them.
You have access from basically any side of town
