Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to

U of A’s role as a cultural resource and economic engine

"Old" culture - doesn't cater to youth, older generation is in control of this region even though U of A brings in youth
A close community (small town) feeling with the stimulation provided by the university and the arts events.
A community of intelligent, inquisitive, active and engaged people; enhanced opportunities to attend lectures and performances in a variety of artistic fields
A great start is the University moving some departments downtown. Our downtown is safer than many downtowns ..... we need to support the businesses we have and encourage many, many more. Provide safe transportation to the area. Maynards has the right idea.
Access to a university and many cultural activities
Access to professional performing arts (Arizona Theatre Company, Tucson Symphony, Arizona Opera) as well as UofAZ arts (theater, school of dance, music) and smaller theater companies and musical groups.
Agreat resource on so many fronts.
Although Tucson is a large city, the locally owned businesses, bicycle friendly streets, and University campus keep things central and give the entire city a good vibe
Arts, culture, intellectual stimulation
As an educated individual, my social and personal interests include theater, opera, music and lectures. All available thanks to the university.
Attract and recruit retired science professionals as a local problem solving resource
Attracts a more eclectic retail environment. It also attracts more arts and culture. Attracts smart, progressive people.
Availability of well-priced high-quality music, dance, theater and other events. Special thanks to TSO, UA Presents, ATC.
Because we are a government/public sector region - government sets the direction. Tucson/Pima County/southern Arizona is controlled by elected Democrats in a State that has a legislature controlled by elected Republicans. Pima County has had stable administration and Board of Supervisors while City of Tucson has had turnover in the City Manager and Council. U of A as a land grant university has engaged with the local business community very differently than ASU. Hundreds of millions of TIF funding for Rio Nuevo was spent with minimal benefit. Pima County wastewater and Tucson water are fighting amongst themselves and with others. Even PAG and TREO are additional bureacracies. We are not nimble, dynamic, responsive to taking advantage of opportunitie because we have a bureaucratic culture. Initiating and sustaining a series of improvements for lean, accountable, responsive, collaborative government would improve the near and longer term quality of life.
Besides Univeristy of Arizona to some extent, there is no one thing that binds together the community. This could lead to pride and enjoyment for the citizens. Maybe a very cool revamped Reid Park? Or a trendy and family friendly down town? An architectural building or artwork can also get associated with a city's identity. Something different and unique - something to talk about to visitors.
Better articulation between community college and the University
Brings programs to the area and helps develop the business community A research hospital.
By this I mean more synergy between local governments, businesses, BANKS, University, and citizen groups for investing in job creation. There are so some good things going on - Treo and Bios5 - but not enough. Rio Nuevo should return to its roots - what it was designed for. I want to see the region prosper!
Can expose my children to educational, sports, cultural opportunities
Communities that have major universities embedded in them provide an attraction to scholars and thinkers as well as to youth. These two populations attract higher quality and more diversity in cultural events, restaurants, stores and a sense of vitality that is lacking in communities whose economies are largely based upon industry, tourism or retail malls.
Cultural and artistic endevors such as concerts, plays, scientific presentations at the U of A, historical and art museums easily accessible. 4th Avenue activities and open air markets, etc.
Culture and arts are enrichment for our community-especialy those offered by the U of A and the Az theater
Culture- tons of art, music, UA events
Desert environment - friendly people, diversity, cultural events, the UofA
Diversity of cultures, university town, horse activities
Educational, economic and cultural engine
Enjoying being outside in our backyard and neighborhood in midtown (Broadway & Country Club area), reading, gardening, walking, bike riding; easy access to downtown and at the UA at various cultural events and institutions (TMA, UA museums, Centennial Hall, UA lectures, public libraries).
Enormous cultural, arts, science, knowledge driver & economic engine & power center of learning
Get UA Downtown too, gather all resources into a small, dense, collaborative downtown space and connect that to high-speed rail to PHX.
Get people out of their homes to mix together people of all ages and cultures. Work on changing negative attitudes that have been around for generations that pit one side of town against another. Some folks are afraid to go to the South or West sides of town even though they have never even been in those neighborhoods. Opening the culture avenues will to entice citizens to care about all of Tucson not just their home turf. Open the minds of the citizens to invest in their city and neighbors. Make a concerted effort to encourage all Tucsonans to embrace the UofA and Pima. Create a plan to help citizens to embarce culture, arts and sports to help them join with all other Tucsononas in enjoying the company and contribution of everyone in Tucson. A comprehensive cultural impact plan can be desinged and implemented even with limited resources.
Good option to ASU - more liberal arts options
Having UA in town makes a big difference, as well as DM airforce base, a robust hispanic culture, and transplants from so many places. Everyone feels welcome in Tucson.
Having a downtown, university and the art area on fourth ave. gives us many different options, not to mention the foothills and outer areas of town.
Having a significant university in our community brings so much to our lives. Educational opprtunities, sports, culture, diversity of ideas, expertise, variety.
Having access to an academic health center and great physicians; artistic, athletic and cultural events on campus; the intellectual vitality that radiates from a great university and the discoveries that its faculty bring to the community.
Having the U of A in Tucson keeps Tucson young, and there is always something to learn. The U brings cultural events that we wouldn't have otherwise.
Having the university in the city provides me and my family educational opportunities, cultural activities, and sports activities that would not be available without it.
How fortunate we are to have a world class/Division I university in our area. What the University adds to the intellectual, cultural, educational and economic factors in Tucson is significant.
I appreciate that people here are more tolerant than in other areas in the state, and that there is more community giving and caring for people who need a leg up. Also the University offers cultural offerings and there is LOTS in the way of theater. Not quite the 'Kennedy country' I'm transplanted from, but not Phoenix either (thankfully).
I came to Tucson for work primarily. Our current primary industries are dependent on unsustainable practices such as military and weapons for military. We lose many University students to other cities. We have abundant solar resources. Other states are moving ahead on this. There are technologies available that use less water to create solar so there should be no reason to move forward. We are also leaders in water harvesting and could capitalize on this if the Chamber of Commerce were to include green industry and not just developers and old standards.
I cannot imagine Tucson with out the UofA. The University brings so much to the area in the way of arts, culture, education, and interesting people who come here to work at or attend the University.
I don't feel overwhelmed by Tucson's size - I feel I have a place here. Almost everywhere I go I run into people I know. The people are friendly and the lifestyle is casual. And yet we have a large university and many cultural opportunities to engage in. There's never a lack for something interesting to do.
I enjoy being able to go to arts, sporting events and other university sponsored or hosted activities.
I feel that it employs a lot of people. It brings a sense of community and pride to Tucson and it is so important that locals have access to an insitution in order to get a quality education. It also brings tourism and out of towners to help boost the economy. All the sporting and theatre events the U of A provides is also so important and brings life to Tucson.
I find Tucson to be very diverse with an abundance of cultural assets. I believe the UA is possibly the most important asset of the whole region. I think the UA should and could toot it's own horn more and reach out to all citizens to participate in and with the UA. Beyond just sports. I like to old west and hispanic influence that has shaped this entire region. I think Tucson has the ability in the coming decades to mold itself into a more desirable and rich community. I'd like to see Tucson brand an image of itself as a outdoor, healthy, intellectual, culturally rich, environmentally sensitive region of America. I'd like to see Tucson build and expand on it's current reputation as a top tier cycling and endurance training center. Build on the wellness reputation that we have become and to pursue Juaquin Ruiz's vision of Tucson becoming a center for geo tourism. I'd like to see Tucson become the desired community within the sun belt for outdoor oriented, healthy lifestyle oriented people to want to live. We are not SoCal or Phoenix. We are different and we attract different people.
I have a Ph.D. but my job prospects here are fairly limited with only one major university. I've been creative and lucky with my employment options. With a poor economy I'm always a bit concerned about my future prospects.
I have gained enjoyment an appreciation of indigenous and Latino culture from living in the border region of southern Arizona. From the food to the arts to programs offered by the University of Arizona, I feel that there are many opportunities to learn about the history and culture of the region.
I like living in university towns. I like the intellectual and cultural things that universities provide -- unusual film series, music events, seminars and talks -- and the people who then take advantage of those. And the type of community created by the people who are attracted to universities. I have two science graduate degrees from the UA and I now work at UA, so it's a big part of my life in Tucson. I think that having the university here enriches the cultural and intellectual aspects of Tucson.
I like living somewhere where English isn't the only language spoken, where there are Mexican and Native American cultures with deep roots and traditions in the region, and where the UA attracts scholars and talent from all over the world. (And if I could pick a #4, it would be the UA!)
I like the fact that people in Tucson are very creative and business oriented. I love that the University of Arizona is here - I would REALLY love to see the UofA get more involved with the small businesses SPECIFICALLY here in Tucson and do more to promote those businesses here than importing larger businesses from elsewhere. But on the same note, I am not against businesses moving here, as a matter of fact I would love to see more businesses move here and have specific areas or locations that those businesses could move to - kind of like San Diego..
I like the intellectual aspect of the university, particularly the emphasis on the sciences and discoveries that can support economic development and improvement of the human condition. I like having access to live music and theater as well as enough movie theaters to provide a reasonable variety.
I like the music concerts, plays, shows and good food that we find here in Tucson. Because of the UA and also downtown venues, we have seen lots of great performances in Tucson and found many interesting cultural activities to take part in.
I like the wide variety of people who value education the university brings to the area. My children can benefit from it's many resources (special programs, hospital, course work, etc.)
I live in unincorporated Pima County and own a business in the City. I can't vote in City elections. There is no cohesion among the components of the region and therefore nothing can effectively be done for the good of the entire region. In addition, the liberal impact of the University(one of our greatest assets) on the City government is detrimental to positive growth.
I love being a part of a community that has a central organization to rally around. Whether it is about sports, academics, arts, or research, the UofA provides Tucson residents an organization to follow and believe in.
I love my job at the U of A. The U of A enhances the community with education, cultural and sporting events.
I love that the school is always a center of activity in the middle of Tucson. It offers great theater, music and sporting events.
I love the U of A and all it offers to our community, especially regarding music and the arts.
I love the University, the arts, and culture that Tucson offers. In general, the progressive atmosphere both politically and religiously really makes this a more happy place to live, a place where I'm not constantly having to battle with the people to convince them that I am not a criminal because I love someone of the same sex.
I love the UofA Poetry Center! The Chamber music Festival, the gem show!
I love the access to higher education. Having the University of Arizona and Pima Community College working to help our community grow and meet the economic and personal dreams and goals of our residents is amazing.
I moved here specifically for the music available through the Jazz Society and the University of Arizona School of Music. I ended up marrying a participant in both!
I take advantage of the intellectual opportunities and cultural offerings, and I appreciate living in a city with the diversity and stimulus that the university provides.
I think the U of A brings diversity, art, and culture to Tucson. Universities generally do tend to attract a more progessive thinking subset of the population; I like that.
I think the age and presence of the University accounts for some of the constructive economic and social developments in Tucson, as compared to other parts of the state. We seem to have a wealth of smart, generous problem-solvers here.
I went to UA as an undergrad, and now I work here. I think the University brings a lot to the region, in terms of sporting events, cultural events, and art.
I wish the community leaders, business leaders, and U of A leadership would sit down on a regular business to find common ground to help Tucson achieve its potential.
I would hate to see us become a big business town, but why don't we utilize those educated at the University to bring in new jobs
I'd work a lot harder to retain knowledge.. retain UA grads from leaving. We have one of the highest ranked business schools in the country, yet very little business development is occuring. More efforts to stimulate, and retain, young business leaders through local efforts to 'grow' businesses of the future.
I'm a huge U of A sports fan, and feel it's the strongest civic bond Tucson has, of any kind. Where else to you see such a blend of ages, ethnicities, religions, political persuasions, socioeconomic statuses, etc. in one venue? Beyond sports, the U of A campus is a central gem in this city, with beautiful green open spaces, consistent red brick buildings, and a climate that values learning and research.
I'm accustomed to life in a larger city than Tucson. For it's size, Tucson has a good selection and quality of cultural activities and events, i.e., theater, music, films, discussion groups. Some of these are endangered, for example, the University by the State's short sightedness on supporting education and cultural activities that attract business with higher paying salaries.
Improve the economy so that people could make a living wage here. entice business to actually come here and STAY here to improve the tax base. the Uof A and raytheon cannot be the only major business in town
In every aspect that I have experienced as a student, as a transfer to the UA, as a professional contacting staff there for collaboration or resources I have had an excellent experience.
In the last 10 years DM has shown no respect for the people living in mid-town, businesses and the UofA by flying low level flights across the city at all hours. These flights are very disruptive to university classes, damages older homes, and damages the quaitly of life for those in the flight path
Inexpensive, easy to park, relatively safe, but also great cultural opportunities downtown and on campus
Involvement of University as planning resource
It adds a culture and arts to our community
It has been a healthy economy, until lately. I need wild lands near my home. I greatly value the University. The climate is great.
It has the many benefits of a city--research university, fine arts, convention center, museums, etc. without the big city pressure of traffic, congestions and pollution
It is a cultural and learning center. (I just wish I could go to more public lectures on campus....but hate to have to find a place to park.) I've enjoyed many classes as an undergraduate and graduate.
It is comfortable living here. There is a strong educational component because of the University and the University adds a strong sports and cultural component as well. People care about their own quality of life and the quality of life of others who live here. The segments blend well: anglos & hispanics, young and old, long-time residents & newcomers.
It is the key to our cultural richness. It provides cultural, educational and medical enhancements. It brings interesting, educated, productive, caring people to our community. The campus itself is a wonderful urban park of sorts. It provides us with common things (like sports) to rally around as a community.
It's important to foster the arts and keep up the variety and availability of shows and exhibits for Tucsonans. The university adds to the diversity of our population and our discourse.
Keeps the community young and active, provides many touchpoints with Tucson residents, offers great sporting and cultural events
Lets encourage university professors to create businesses. Support them with business training and capital. Without a broader based economy I fear we are doomed to low paying jobs.
Living in a university town provides such breadth of experience, from athletics to fine arts to sciences. The university has brought me friends that include book lovers, gourmets, astronomers, solar power researchers, rare plant specialists, and anthropologists.
Local businesses and cafes
Make downtown/UA focal point for arts, entertainment. Expand with mass transit to Phoenix too?
Many UA students come to and contribute to the culture – being limited by tuition increases how many students can afford it? K-12 students not being prepared for higher ed. Negative impact on business and culture.
Many UofA students leave town due to lack of business
Many opportunities to enjoy all kinds of music - blues festival, folk festival, Club Crawl, free/low-cost UA performances.
Masters swim team and field hockey club for recreation, UA medical library for professional resource.
Melting pot of many different cultures and interests; Southwestern art; Education UA biotech and Solar center, astronomy; 4th Avenue Street fair; Tour De Tucson; Soccer Tournament; Gem Show, etc.
More economic opportunities, especially for UofA grads
Multi-cultural in ethnicity and life-styles. Between the proximity to another country, our major university and military base this community is as divers as they come.
My neighborhood; UA; quality of music and art culture
My wife and I are alums - I think college towns are more lively/interesting usually... UA sports and cultural events are a fairly big part of our lives
No Doubt, there are activities going around University area and downtown but would like to see it more lively in terms of socio-culture scene in terms of true city life.
Opportunity to take advantage of classes; attend lectures; attend student theatre, musical and dance events, athletic activities. We have many friends who are associated with the U of A.
Orchestras (professional and amateur), numerous venues, university arts series, theater companies, public installations)
Parks and university and dm and raytheon, ibm , the mines need to coordinate and share resources. they are not separated from the rest of the community. the community needs to function as a whole. parks should be fee-free and be open to all, and treasured by all
Presence of University of AZ - exposure to science, astronomy, the arts, and accessibly to same
Presence of a large university - the positive cultural and economic impacts
Presence of the University as a source of culture and economy
Proximity to the university and what it offers (music, arts, cool science stuff, young people and more diversity)
Research and development, positive effect on workforce, provides an economic boost and University of Arizona Athletic program unites are community and provides great entertainment.
Resources: The University, medical centers, cultural activities, athletic events
Safety is an issue affecting the region. The same issues exist here as in other large cities, however, it is instigaged by underlying social economic issues which need attention. for example, what is the make up of the U of A? does it reflect the compositon of our community/state? Our school system is struggling. Where is the emphasis on dealing with these issues. We do not need more prisons.
Specifically supporting our public schools by connecting with resources in the community private public partnerships and university
Strong hispanic culture and the native tribes plus the vibrancy of the U of A
Student influence, acceptance of diversity, brings new arts and science opportunities (talks, fairs, museums)
The U of A has so much potential for enriching our community. I enjoy lectures, the planetarium, and other resources
The U of A is our land grant college and has a responsibility to interact with the community. The is so much that we can share, cultural and intellectual events, but they seem very remote, except in sports. They might also find more support from the public as they battle with the legislature if more people were able to attend events there.
The U of A is such a fabulous resource, but I feel like I'm missing most of it. When my daughter was at ASU, in the school of fine arts, I got a weekly email about all the arts presentations on campus. I asked at U of A if they had such a thing, and they didn't. It seems like it would be good for students to connect their work to the 'real' world, and for Tucson to connect to the students.
The U of A plays a key role in education, jobs creation, culture, entertainment and hope.
The UA is the single most important factor in our region's economy, yet nobody at the local government level seems to pay it much attention. When was the last time you even heard Mayor Walkup mention the UA in one of his speeches? They are taking this jewel for granted and it will come back to haunt them later.
The University also enhances the cultural and intellectual environment of our city. We have access to events and information that other areas without major research institutes lack.
The University drives jobs, housing, and the economy
The University of Arizona creates an atmosphere of education and excitement - museums, lectures, sports, performing arts, music, cultural activities, all extending to the larger community. It's all there and we are invited to participate! I love the University.
The University of Arizona has an enormously positive impact on the quality of life and economic productivity in Tucson. It is the single most important institution in the state of Arizona.
The University of Arizona is a treasure. It has contributed to the immense intellectual and spiritual base of the Tucson attitude: respect for all cultures, art and theatre and music for all interests
The University of Arizona is one of the major economic drivers in the Tucson region and carries a great image for Tucson.
The University of Arizona is our crown jewel fueling knowledge based discoveries and high tech job growth, sporting events, fine arts and so much more. We have arts, culture (from southwestern/hispanic/tribal to symphony/Arizona Theatre/UA presents/museums), restaurants, sports (outdoor and spectator), mountains and deserts, plants and wildlife, gem shows and rodeo.
The University of Arizona is such a high-caliber institution and truly does a great job of partnering with businesses, and allowing entrepreneurs to spin off technology ideas. Supporting this with more of a 'think tank' atmosphere to foster innovation and business/academic partnerships to help other businesses and public entities become more creative and cutting-edge will be key to future development.
The University of Arizona is the center of intellectual and technological prowess in Tucson. The university excels in so many areas and is a real asset when recruiting talented and diverse professionals to Tucson. As a UA alum, I'm proud of the role that the UA plays in this community from academics to arts and culture.
The University offers so much to the community from continuing education, to preforming arts and athletics; many of which are comparable to professional offerings in other cities
The UofA brings cultural events (shows)
The UofA is a 'centerpiece' of knowledge, learning & activities in the community. UofA sports & cultural events provide excitement & entertainment for many.
The UofA is doing a lot of important research and drawing in a lot of intelligent students to Tucson - both grad and undergrad. Those students go on to stay and be brilliant within the city itself - or go without and help build Tucson and the UofA's reputation countrywide - and the university itself offers so much to the community and Tucson culture.
The area between downtown and university is an underutilized underdeveloped resource
The borderlands culture, the Native American cultures, the ranching heritage, that co-exist (not always comfortably) with the creative community of the university and the arts.
The cultural aspects (e.g. museums)
The cultural opportunities, music, art, architecture, natural beauty and climate, the University of Arizona
The culture and flavor of Tucson, primarily in the older, more established areas including downtown and university area. There is a vibe associated with these areas that is uniquely Tucson and separates us from other towns/cities.
The different cultural and historic events that Tucson offers, we can watch a rodeo, as well as go to the theatre, opera, U of A, and musuems.
The educational opportunities and the cultural and intellectual richness that the UA brings to Tucson; UA sports; the tradition and beauty of the campus and the activity center (esp Main Gate) around it.
The hugely expensive trolley to the U of A is unnecessary. Rio Nuevo is an embarrassment. Concentrate on real needs within the community to encourage business growth.
The many programs provided by the symphony and other artistic groups and the U of A
The opera is a disgrace, the symphony is ok for old people, the Tucson Chamber Artists and the UA music school are evidence better will work.
The people who live here are friendly and enjoyable. There is lots of culture. I love the university and it's many offerings for sports, art, history and theater.
The presence of the U of A brings in a young population, supports businesses catering to this population and offers diverse cultural presentations.
The u of A is important for the community in many ways, including its educational opportunities, its economic benefits, and its extra curricular offerings, including sports and cultural activities.
The university & culture
The university and arts communities
The university and downtown area offers many good events - cultural and sports. At times feels like a college town.
The university area looks united because of the simple requirement that each new building have red bricks somewhere. Some cities have very strict zoning requirements on what buildings can look like (e.g., Santa Fe). Even businesses like McDonalds have to comply and they find a way to do it. I don't know what kinds of rules would be helpful to this process, but having some kind of theme or general direction for new buildings might be helpful to unify the look of downtown and the city.
The university brings a cultural and intellectual dimension to Tucson. There are many entertainment and educational opportunities for the community. I love the campus and the students.
The university is a good draw. Incentives must attract new business and enhance existing businesses.
The university needs to be careful with admissions. Only allow the best and brightest. Money and business follow a highly educated population.
The variety of cultural, entertainment, enrichment and sports activities offered at the U of A compensates for the lack of other arts and sports offerings in the area
There are many opportunities for education (UA, Pima Community College, etc.), the arts (opera, theatre, music, museums, etc.), and appreciation of nature (Sonora Desert Museum, Mt. Lemmon, Sabino Canyon, etc.).
There are many things to do here because of the museums, the university, the active lifestyle, and cultural groups that live in Tucson.
There is a small community feel to our large city. I enjoy the cultural activities (gem show, ATC theater) and U of A sports (football, basketball and women's volleyball).
There is a university that offers a lot of cultural and learning opportunities. There are affordable (usually, compared to bigger cities) concerts, art events and sporting events. Medical facilities, recreation, good food.
There is plenty to do, lots going on for people of all ages. We have two small children and the library is great, LOVE the zoo, local theater for kids and adults is terrific, UA has wonderful community offerings, and my husband really appreciates the local music scene.
Too dependent on UA and Davis Monthan / not enough jobs and business generated revenue that will support growth and improvement
Tucson as many say, feels like a small town. However, there is an a remarkable diversity of people and neighborhoods, and a core 'organic' community of people who are caring, innovative, and motivated to make our city an increasingly better place to live. This is reflected in our wonderful arts community, wide ranging cultural centers and culinary choices, world famous and innovative University of Arizona, and hundreds of community and regional awareness and development groups.
Tucson has a friendly, small town feel over all considering the large population size. The U of A presence helps bring this feeling of community unity as well as small business community.
Tucson has a reputation for low pay and a lot of low-class employment opportunities. Raising the standard of this community is a multifaceted project that requires education, opportunity and investment in work that means something to the individual as well as the nation. More partnerships with the University Of Arizona and clean businesses should be formed and long-range plans for creating fertile start-up incubator parks must be laid down.
Tucson is a muticultural community which offers so many artists, cultural events, University/educational opportunities.
Tucson is big enough to offer a variety of experiences with its university and cultural centers and variety of ethnic backgrounds. It is not so big that traffic and distances has become frustrating like Phoenix and Los Angeles.
Tucson is blessed with many creative people in the arts - music, dance, visual arts, architecture, theater and more. UAs strong colleges help support and nurture that creativity.
Tucson needs more businesses to find their home here. We need it to keep young talent from the U, to make a vibrant downtown sustainable. All things that would make Tucson a better place to live.
Tucson offers a wide and varied range of things to do--artistic-cultural-sports-the resources of the University et al.
U of A is important to me because both of my graduate degrees were earned there. Also because the University is an integral part of southern Arizona and a willing partner to many activities - most recently the Festival of Books- as well as providing a plethora of artistic venues.
U of A – big economic employer & students
U of A, PCC and schools such as Catalina High School, University High School, and the Vail school system, although they are all now being starved to death. How we are to invest in a strong economic future for the region without supporting them, I do not know. Where will new jobs and trained employees come from.
U of Az & the culture emanating from the U
UA , Pima and all of the related scientific enterprises, research, medical care, and cultural opportunities
UA attracted me to Tucson with its renowned business school and other excellent programs.
UA is the driver of our local economy. It is the source of so many 'quality of life' elements (e.g. collegiate athletics, night life, special events) and is a constant fountain of innovation and creativity in our region.
UA – adds diversity / culture / advancement / entertainment / employment
University and the arts
University at center of town and drives the economy
University is a main economic driver of the region
University of Arizona sports/culture
University of Arizona's events (sports, music & ballet)
University town- sports, economic development, and workforce development
UofA cultural influence
UofA cultural opportunities/Technical opportunities
UofA is the primary driver of our quality of life (healthcare, entertainment, education, culture)
We enjoy the opera, the Yaqui celebrations, Tucson Meet Yourself, the Peace Fair, the live music festivals, the Native American Art festival (that we much prefer to be held at the U of A), the array of diverse restaurants, live theater, and art galleries and museums.
We graduate so many intelligent, energetic, creative people at the U of A every year...and then they move somewhere else b/c they can get paid better almost anywhere else in the country. Intelligent, energetic, creative, professional people move here every year b/c of the weather & the beauty of the area...and then they move b/c they can't support their families on what people get paid here. I own a business and have seen some of the marketing that has been done to draw business to Tucson ('Bring your business to Tucson. You don't have to pay people much here'.) That is totally self defeating. We have to build the middle class here. If we want to keep innovators here and keep moving forward, we have to pay people decently...and then that money will move throughout the Tucson economy for the benefit of all.
We have a flagship university here with concrete professions (engineering, the sciences, etc.) but they can't find work here
We have a major research resource in the U of A, lot's of open land and the most sunshine of any city in the country. That we don't lead the country and rightly the world in solar development is shameful.
We have an enormous 'brain drain' from our University. There must be a business structure that keeps this talent hear in our region. We need a higher quantity of professional jobs.
We have companies, a great University and many restaurants and businesses to satisfy me and to keep me here.
We have lived in university towns for the past 40 years and enjoy the atmosphere created by sports and arts offerings.
We love the hispanic and native roots of the area, the multicultural aspects of the area, the University and all the educational, arts and music opportunities in the area. We are not ones to come from somewhere else and want to make this just like where we came from! This is a vibrant area with a lot to offer and learn from. We also bought in a good school district for our daughter and am happy with the quality of the schools - who are doing so much with so little!!!!
We need to work on our public education in order to make this a place attractive to companies with high-paying wages. We should not be going after call-centers and other unskilled, low paying companies. We should be going after optics, high-tech companies. They require a skilled work force, however. If that means slashing administrator jobs in order to pay teachers better, closing some schools in order to focus energy, money on a more select set of schools: do it! Focus on teachers, the kids, and BASICS that are now counted as frivolous extras to be cut: art, music, languages, P.E. I had a first class public education here from 1st through 12th grade, one that sent me to Stanford, Oxford and Harvard Universities. I worry that our public schools will not serve my children nearly as well. Also, we need to partner better with the U of A. It has been--and should remain a driving force here. Let's work on keeping more of its graduates as the loyal and proud business, entrepreneurial, and artistic engines that drive and shape this town. At the moment, I fear that the UA is more interested in its proposed medical campus in Phx than it is in its home base campus here in Tucson.
We tend to place people ahead of property as an electorate. We have great cultural opportunities with the University and arts/music venues downtown.
What a rich arts environment Tucson has. The scope of the arts run the cambit of whatever the mind can conjure up. Theatre, big and small, The University's Theatre, Film and Television presentations. Galleries...public and private. Tucsonans love to READ.
When the President spoke at our recent University of Arizona memorial for the shooting victims, the diversity of the speakers was uplifting. Mixing of cultures leads to innovation and a sensitivity to the needs of others.
Without it, there would be no reason for me to live here. It is my school and my employer. It is our intellectual cultural center.
Without the U of A, we wouldn't have many of the arts that I was praising above. The U brings us great sports events, and tremendous international prestige because of our science (Kitt Peak, Biosphere II, etc), community lectures. It also, because of all the wonderful young people, helps keep our community youthful and innovative.
Wonderful cultural activities, esp music, centered on UA, physically and fiscally accessible
Work with the U of A to develop new businesses and companies.
You can't beat a research one university for pumping grads, research dollars, professional development opportunities, and sports into the local economy. I'm thrilled UA is heading downtown - I'm hopeful they will make the most of this opportunity.
