Imagine Greater Tucson 2010-11 Phase I
Community Conversation and Survey Statements Related to

Less crime and a sense of personal safety

11. More residential buildings downtown = safety 2. higher density, w/out destroying old neighborhoods 3. more people friendly vs car friendly
26 dead, our elected congresswoman in the hospital and republicans say that we need more guns. We need to keep guns out of the hands of kids, criminals and lunatics. I don't care if republicans want their guns but they make laws so any idiot can get powerful ones.
3A calm city
4A community cannot thrive with low literacy and education levels. To maintain high levels of employment, tax revenues and to decrease crime and poverty.
5A literate population leads to better jobs, better education, improved economy, reduced crime rate...a stronger community!
6A lot of programs to protect you
7A person may have a right to carry a gun, but I feel I have the right to have them NOT carry a gun. I don't trust amatures carrying guns in my public space. I don't know what they are like when they are angry and have a gun, when stressed, when depressed, when in a panic situation.
8Additional Public Saftey Personnal
9Affects quality of life, crime, property values, indirectly affects schools too
10After a few years of being in Tucson without, I finally had to buy a car to get around. As population expands, more cars will only mean more congestion/wider roads. Clean, safe, convenient mass transit would free up lanes of cars, and prevent air pollution. More dedicated bike streets would help, too.
11Aggressively pursue those responsible for graffiti
12Aggressively reduce crime
13All three of these issues (education, public safety, and infrastructure) bring obvious thoughts about what makes a community a desirable place to live, work, and recreate. We need to maintain what we have and grow new opportunities. No one will want to stay or come here if the quality of life is poor. We need a clean safe and healthy community
14Although I no longer drive I see how dangerous our streets have become since I first moved here. Something needs to be done before we have gridlock.
15Although Tucson is not a 'Blood in blood out' city, there is still a lot of gang activity here. We need more things for our youth to do to keep them occupied and out of gangs.
16Although the state of AZ is much too right-wing and conservative for me, the city of Tucson and Pima County have some wonderfully progressive organizations, laws, and people, who work for sustainability, social justice, and peace. I stay here because those people and those groups are being the change they wish to see in the world.
17Although there is a revitalization happening, downtown still is not Liveable. There are no good apartments and homes that give you a city feel. No grocery stores and safe streets to stroll at night. Clubs DO NOT make a downtown...if you want that go to Nogales.
18An aging citizen and I want to sleep at night
19An attractive natural environment makes me feel safer and happy.
20Annoying at times to have a bike lane end and no real choice of how to continue the ride safely.
21Another VERY important factor that will keep people inside their homes instead of being out spending money is crime rate. Bad parts of town get abandon and became one of those areas that I wish to visit to support local business but I don't want to get killed doing that as well.
22Anyone who deliberately abuses anyone or any group, through discrimination, bullying, emotionally, physically, mentally, and psychologically whether it be an adult or a child. It shouldn't hurt to be a decent human being. This also includes animal abusers.
23Arizona & the Tucson government seem very corrupt and the votes of officials don't seem to match what the majority of Tucsonans think
24As a bike commuter, I would like to see more bike lanes and safer bike routes. Also, more place to lock up bikes at public buildings. A rail line would be jiffy.
25As a homeowner, I love using the alleys for walking my dog. I don't like that the city refuses to remove the trash cans so they are always full of trash, they are open to all vehicles, so they attract crime and reckless drive-throughs, and they are not kept up- again attracting crime, vandalism, and grafitti.
26As a recreational shooter it is very nice to have a safe, controlled and accurate shooting range.
27As a senior citizen and new resident here, I feel safer knowing I can get personal assistance from a well-trained, well-staffed police department when I need it. This is especially important to me because of the easy access to firearms here.
28As much as diversity is a positive in Tucson, the hispanic (mexican) influence is equally negative. It creates a public safety challenge and through recent 'boycott' messages it has now had a negative economic influence.
29As the violence increases the entire region will be negatively impacted. I am especially sad to be scared to go into Mexico which was one of the reasons I moved here.
30Barring the high temperature and blazing sun in the summer months, the availability of clean and safe bike paths and sidewalks allows me and my family to get out and exercise. These designated paths are well traveled, and so it feels safe to use them. Also, I often encounter the same people while I'm out and about, which allows me to get to know my neighbors.
31Because I have one behind my house and it is filled with bad inhabitants (homeless/gang members)
32Because Tucson at night is really dark and unsafe seeming
33Because all cities need to protect their citizens
34Because discomfort, poverty, drigs, and gangs affect us all
35Because here I feel more securtiy for myself and my family
36Because if you don't have a car, you can walk there safely.
37Because it is more secure for my family, and because I like doing activities
38Because it is tranquil without a lot of violence affecting my children
39Because of our close vicinity to Mexico there is major drug running across the border and staged from Tucson. This is a drawback for we who live here and for encouraging businesses and large employer bases to settle here.
40Because one can feel well and safe
41Because roads are pretty bad with parking and parks because they should be 100% safe
42Because the children have a lot of energy to explore and many times there is not enough people to look after them
43Because the community is safe my family and I feel much more secure
44Because there are a lot of deliquents
45Because we need our streets to be safe
46Because when you crossing it turns on very quickly and cars getting accident
47Been burgarized 4 times. Burglars are the unemployed, the addicts and lack skills so they prey on the rest of us. If we had jobs, education and more to offer, these marginal persons may choose an alternate way to survive.
48Before moving here, I would often walk for exercise at local parks. In Tucson, I don't feel safe doing this by myself, and the parks are not very beautiful or serene.
49Being able to safely get around the city it the most important thing to me. The primary consideration in transportation is the automobile, but that isn't sustainable. We need better ways to bike and walk to our destinations.
50Better bike paths that lead to points of interest or commerce around town. Existing bike paths don't have lights or are broken. Dark alley ways are not safe, especially for a young woman. Aviation bike path in particular.
51Better control of illegal population coming into this country
52Better jobs, less crime
53Better laws about reporting, send illegal population back to Mexico. Better border protection
54Better lighting on streets
55Better police protection
56Better quality of schools, better, safer neighborhoods
57Better regulations on cycling and traffic laws is important to me because I want my family to be safe when riding their bikes on the road.
58Better, safer roads
59Bicyclists are a hazard to themselves and drivers
60Bike lanes and safety for cyclists.
61Bike paths and enforcement
62Border Crime
63Border and immigration policies are negatively impacting the habitats throughout southern Az - without reform in areas exacerbating these issues, the situation will likely worsen. Decriminalization and taxation of marijuana and reform of immigration policies could decrease the amount of violence and crime in southern Az.
64Border issue- drugs and criminal activity
65Border security
66Build bike lanes away from car traffic and extend from east to west and north to south for biking to work, to UofA, for pleasure. It is dangerous to ride bikes in Tucson because the current bike lanes are too narrow, next to car traffic. And the bike lanes need to be maintained.
67Builds better communities that are safer and less transient
68By attracting business, our city will grow as well as our families. We have lost too many businesses and it is impacting our safety and our way of life.
69By making the border more secure it would help with crime in Tucson.
70By removing restrictions to gun ownership and where guns can be carried into, Tucson fosters a sense of vigilanteism and creates opportunities for mentally impaired people to act out their sick fantasies. More Safety please.
71CRIME LEVEL
72Cars are dangerous, noisy and require a lot of ugliness (pavement, parking lots, gas stations, car washes...)
73Cars seem to rule and it makes riding a bike very dangerous. Find ways to slow down cars and make biking a higher priority.
74Certain areas of town are unsafe. TKenedy Park, the nearest park to my house, is not a place I would let my kids play.
75Clean safe apartment complex that is affordable
76Clean up the City. Reinstate graffiti abatement.
77Clean up the drugs. Reduce illegal activity.
78Close the gun show loophole
79Community interest in safe bike paths
80Concealed weapons for instance
81Concern about safety in and out of the home - the level and types of violence are horrific; perhaps more about the community ethic/culture than about law enforcement
82Congested roads lead to lost time and accidents
83Controlling our population of illegal migrants would make Tucson a safer place to live as well as reduce the burdens on our public services and thereby hold down the financial costs on all the legal residents.
84Corruption in government and the media
85Create more opportunities for functional and efficient mass transportation like lightrail, trains, subways, etc. Create safer opportunities to ride a bike. Put less emphasis on cars. But if cars are emphasized then build freeways in Tucson, so cars and gas can be used efficiently.
86Crime
87Crime (specifically senseless gang violence, homicide, home invasions, car jacking and theft) are increasing.
88Crime / Fix the border
89Crime Rate
90Crime and Drugs
91Crime and drug problems
92Crime and economic disparity
93Crime enforcement
94Crime is terrible in Tucson. I have seen the crime rates increase steadily over the past 20 years with respect to break-ins and violent crime. We need more cops.
95Crime level
96Crime rate
97Crime rate is rising
98Crime rate is too high, too many illegal aliens, it's time to get serious.
99Crime rate, drugs, illeagle immigration
100Crime rates
101Crime rates/ police presence
102Crime seems to be rising, but as with all levels of government, those who commit violent crimes should be forever banished from society without a trial
103Crime to include violence and gangs
104Crime/Theft/'tagging'
105Crime/gangs
106Crime/graffiti
107Crime/safety
108Crime/tagging
109Crimes
110Criminalization of the homeless leads to lower possibility of obtaining a job, improving individuals lives. Same for immigrants
111Cycling in Tucson is dangerous since the bike routes are unclear and often bike lanes disappear at busy intersections. Clear paths to connect throughout Tucson should be available to allow for commuters to have bicycles as a safe option for transportation.
112Cyclists without nocturnal lights are a threat to themselves and to unsuspecting drivers
113Danger to people
114Dangerous
115Dangerous for young people, there seems to be a lot of drugs in schools
116Decrease crime
117Decrease violence
118Delinquent activity
119Deliquency
120Dirty, lots of crime, poor drivers, poor education
121Doesn't affect us personally but we get Tuc. TV and Newspaper and feel that the coverage of gangs, drugs, violence etc. hurts our image. That impacts companies that might want to come to the area.
122Don't want to hurt
123Don't want to kill one by accident as they are always in the way!
124Downtown is really sketchy
125Downtown is the heart of any city and people should be able to live here and move around without fear, at any hour, not just 8-5
126Downtowns can be congested; overly busy; difficult to get around, and dangerous in some areas.
127Driving in Tucson is always dangerous. Phones and speed are a bad combo.
128Driving in Tucson seems dangerous - people slow down for the photo cameras, then speed right up. People run most every light; yellow means to speed up instead of slow down in Tucson! The downtown intersection at Congress/Toole/Broadway was horribly designed. It is a terror in rush hour.
129Driving thru Tucson on 10 is depressing. It is junky and dirty looking. Gives a bad impression of the city. And so many neighborhoods are scary looking. There need to be laws about keeping ones property in order.
130Drug problems
131Drug sub culture
132Drug trafficking
133Drug violence, gang violence
134Drugs and Gangs
135Drugs and Safety
136Drugs, gangs, and unstable people pose a danger to all citizens.
137Due to the border there is a lot of crime due to drugs and guns back and forth across the border.
138Education is the driving tool for survival. One needs to develop life-long skills that allow for an individual to be productive in the work force. Irregardless of the field an individual choses to follow, these resources must be available to allow each member of society to be successful. This is not a priority in Tucson. This must change in order to obtain a smooth running economy. Unemployment breeds crime, violence and proverty--Tucson is heading in that direction in a very rapid speed.
139Education is the key to an innovative and empowered society. We must invest in education to create a healthy, sustainable community. Education fights crime, homelessness, abuse and unwanted pregnancy, etc. etc.
140Even tho this has improved, it needs more improvement. You can be stopped for traffic violations that are about inches over turns or stops yet, others speed twice the rate, etc. You cant get a police officer onsite for an accident or burglery! Seems we need to be about serious drug related and gang crime reduction rather than perceived harrassment of law abiding persons.
141Every one needs a job. I'd like my kids to find work here. Higher paying jobs also provide more money for other improvements and tend to lower crime.
142Everyone should feel safe and welcome, and recent laws, (Prop 107, ethnic studies ban) are making this difficult
143Everyone wants a safer community, and when the crime rates go down more people will move in, improving Tucson's community.
144Everyone wants to belong and can feel safe and be expressive
145Extensive crime is brought in due to the drug trafficking from Mexico. Obviously a very big problem to tackle & one the police have been working on but still a problem.
146Eyesore & dangerous.
147Fear of violence
148Figure out a way to reduce the graffiti and other unlawful behavior.
149Find some way to reduce the high rate of theft
150Fix the border
151Flood control
152Focus more on getting rid of crime
153For a big city I feel safe.
154For over 20 years I have live in an historical neighborhood in the DM flight path. At times the planes are so loud that you cannot in your house and we have replaced the windows with double pane. They were not this loud 20 years ago. Sometimes are worse than others. I have been awaken at night by the flights (I mean midnight) I do not want the F35s here. Snowbird planes are a problem. I am concerned about the pollution from the planes. You can see the fuel raining down. I am concerned about crashes. I know DM is important to our economy, but maybe we should look to what Chandler did with Williams AFB.
155For pedestrians in the area of downtown, it's not a safe place crossing the streets. People in cars continue to run lights and go through when pedestrians have the right of way. They also run plenty of red lights.
156For retirees who don't have kids in the system, they don't care & don't want to fund it. What they don't understand is that every uneducated dropout that we produce increases the possibility of those displaced people pursuing crime as a 'career.'
157For the gangs
158Fun and safe area, and it's free
159GRAFFITI
160Gang activity, drug corridor, violence in Mexico
161Gang violence/activity
162Gangs
163Gangs, drugs, sexual assaults and murders make you think twice about going out at night.
164Garbage and broken glass in the streets, petty crimes, absentee landlords. Graffiti and vandalism in our neighborhoods. There needs to be more enforcement of these small crimes, because their cumulative effect degrades the quality of life for everyone.
165General Tucson public is unaware/passive about private prisons in our area (Florence, Eloy, and Tucson) and this deeply cripples our community
166Get rid of Gang activites.
167Get rid of all Gangs
168Get rid of drugs along Grant
169Get rid of guns
170Get rid of litter/blight/vandalism
171Get rid of the guns
172Get rid of the petty crime on/surrounding the university
173Getting around town can be a hassle. I prefer not driving East to West if I don't have to. Putting more traffic lights on those roads may have helped with the traffic flow but in reality, it only lowers the number of people that are willing to go across town to shop/search for good restaurant. I personally would like to support the business around the downtown area but getting in, finding parking, and getting out takes outrageously long. Highway, I-10, going towards phoenix has a bottle neck by miracle mile exit, causing bad traffic jam if not accidents. Also, good driving education should be stressed extensively since there are many slow drivers on the left lane of the interstate.
174Getting stopped behind a bus is very frustrating and can be dangerous
175Given Tucson's climate, it is possible to ride you rbike most every day. I wish there were more off the street bike avenues/lanes/paths. This would really contribute to my quality of life. Biking is great you can meet many of your transportion needs in this climate and get good exercise and enjoymentat the same time. I ride my bike to work and to do many of my errands, but, the biggest obstacle to doing more is safety and and the availability of convenient, safe bike routes.
176Good infrastructure is important for public safety, economic development, respect and feeling for the community, and public activities.
177Good police
178Government's sole function (including security and safety) is to solve problems; neither council nor civil service seem to understand that
179Graffiti & vandalism of desolate property
180Graffiti and crime
181Graffiti and murals are ugly and sicken me. Crime in general is a bad thing. Traffic is not the concern. Drugs, home invasions, theft, vandalism, murder, etc...
182Graffiti is a symptom of a breakdown in civility, a lack of pride of place
183Graffiti is criminal vandalism, and it destroys the aesthetics of neighborhoods.
184Graffiti, trash, crime
185Grafitti
186Gun carry- safety issues
187Gun control, marijuana, i.e. Rosemont Mine, illegal immigration (medical, services, anchor babies)
188Gun controls in place
189Guns and Safety
190Hard stance against gangs
191Have less crime
192Have our borders secure
193Have our police and youth work together
194Having been through one of the first Citizens Police Academy graduates, I did not appreciate how well trained and how generally more efficient our police officers are in Tucson. I suspect our crime rate is lower than other communities in Arizona because of our training and professionalism. The downturn in the economy is likely to increase crime rates because of fewer badges on the streets.
195Help put an end to violence/nonsense
196Here is not a lot of traffic, the area is much safer than the Tucson city limits
197Higher crime rate than anyone would be comfotable with
198Historically a community that fights for social justice
199Home invasions in my neighborhood....tried to steal a car from my driveway
200How do you get people to be considerate to all others? We need to treat each other, really all things, with respect and dignity. People who become criminals seem to think they can have whatever they want at any cost to others.
201I WISH IT WAS A SAFE PLACE TO RAISE CHILDREN AND IT ISNT
202I WISH IT WAS SAFER HERE.
203I am concerned about reductions and/or attrition of police and fire fighters with no replacements. We need to be safe in this community and we need to find the dollars to do it. We live too close to a volatile border not to do this.
204I am frightened that gun laws are endangering me personally as well as the public at large.
205I am in this area often and feel threatened.
206I am queer and I am glad I don't fear for my safety when out in public
207I am terrified whenever I see a person with a holstered gun in public. What if it went off accidentally in public? What if someone else grabbed it? What if the person had no training and could not control his temper? What if he used it in a bogus self-defense situation? We need to de-normalize gun ownership. There are too many kids killed by their parents' guns.
208I am told that Tucson is not supposed to street lighting in order to have clear sky for various astronomy centers around the area. I do appreciate this effort in terms of energy saving also but sometimes many streets in university area are too dark.Enough dark to make you feel unsafe. There are times that i have to walk through them (when i dont have any company and i have a reason to go out alone), i have to be really cautious. Having some light around university where most of residents do walk would be additional but useful step in avoiding any crime in the area.
209I appreciate all the opportunities for service because of how bad our demographics are in this county. We were # 1 in crime, top 10 in worst education, #2 in poverty as a State, top in teen pregnancy etc.
210I beleive a lot of crime comes across the border
211I believe that Tucson is getting a reputation for not being safe due to gang activity and drug runners. Homicides, shootings, and assaults seem to be a nightly item on the news.
212I bike everywhere, so the holes make it hard, dangerous, and very uncomfortable
213I care about future generations. I believe better education will create better safety, better training for future jobs, and more happiness among families and therefore will impact the entire community. It is currently underfunded. Classes need to be smaller. There are public schools of unequal quality in different neighborhoods of different incomes.
214I commute by bike a few days a week but parts of my commute are dangerous with regard to lack of bike lanes or sand/debris along rillito path.
215I cycle and I am afraid to ride in Tucson streets
216I dislike grafitti and stuff like that
217I do bicycle commute at times and I have to ride on fast streets and bumpy roads that often have glass and other trash on them. I would like to be safe while commuting and I think this would increase the number of bicycle commuters as well, decrease pollution and car traffic.
218I do not feel safe in all areas of town
219I do not feel safe in this city, or in my neighborhood. Lack of police and other safety enforcement is a huge problem. Transportation systems are dangerous. I have had my residence broken into many times and often officers do not respond to the call until hours, or even days, after the incident. I have had friends who were students innocently shot as passers by. I have had friends be mugged, raped, or threatened by strangers. Yet I recently had an officer spend 40 minutes issuing me a speeding ticket for going 4 miles over the speed limit. There is little rational in the justice system and its financial distribution in this city. I do not feel that I will continue my residence here much longer if the city safety is not improved.
220I do not find the downtown inviting or a place where I want to spend any time. The neighborhoods would look safer and look as if people cared about their homes and city if they were neat and tidy and cared for.
221I don't always feel safe because of the amount of crime.
222I don't feel comfortable walking around at night because there is no street lighting, even in the downtown area. Additionally, police are rarely seen patrolling potential high use areas, such as downtown. A bike patrolman or two would be a good addition.
223I don't feel safe at all watching people walk around carrying guns. It makes me feel threatened. I hate it! There should be gun control laws.
224I don't feel safe going places by myself.
225I don't feel safe riding the buses and they don't have schedules or stops that work for me. I worked it out once and my commute to work would require 2 transfers and take 2 hours one way. That's unacceptable. Also, consider a E-purse system like the one implemented on buses in King County Washington (ORCA) so exact change isn't needed to ride the bus.
226I don't feel save in South Tucson. I'm not sure if it's possible to improve this area...
227I don't want to hit one
228I enjoy the creativity that people bring to the stores there. However, over the past couple of months it seems like it has been getting a little to violent there and I no longer visit there after dark.
229I enjoy the security of my building
230I feel it is a safe community, that is small enough that I could go out and outreach the community
231I feel like it could be an extension of the social, fun, and safe feel of University Ave but it really doesn't feel safe at all (except on the All Soul's Procession)
232I feel safe on many of the designated streets for bycycles
233I feel safe.
234I feel safer living in a community where people with obvious mental health issues can be identified and treated promptly, for their safety and the safety of others.
235I feel that Tucson has become gangsterland. I feel unsafe.
236I feel that we are discriminating against a large and important part of our population.
237I feel the city has done a poor job of insuring the essential needs of the community are met (safety, courts), I feel they use scare tactics to raise taxes, misrepresent how the funds are being used and waste taxpayers hard earned money on worthless pet projects and over staffed offices.
238I feel we need to work to make this safer (not by every one carring a gun) and for not to be a laughing stock for the rest of the country as still the WILD west.
239I find it very threatening that anyone (crazy or not) can carry a concealed weapon without a permit and with no training. Clearly the screening doesn't work (Jared Loughner). I personally feel much less safe here than I did in Seattle because everyone is armed to the teeth. Today at Trader Joes there was a guy in the next checkout lane with a pistol hanging from a holster (NOT a cop!). I've been in restaurants where people are armed (weapons displayed, not concealed). I think this is madness. This is enough of a concern that we are serously considering moving back to Seattle even though we love Tucson. The commitment here (legislature) to having everyone armed is *very* troubling.
240I had somebody shoot off a gun in my apartment complex and another guy try and get me to get in a car with him.
241I hate big cities like chicago and new york to live in. The traffic, crime, noise, lack of natural world, and overall mean people makes those environments horrible to me. Tucson has enough of the city life to have most things available to me while avoid most of the evils of big city life.
242I have a 14 year old son. It is essential to our overall health to feel safe, secure, and live in well-maintained housing that is affordable
243I have a strong love/hate relationship with our alleys in central Tucson. I love that they are a quiet retreat for walking and dog walking, and I think the alleys are our greatest wasted resource. I don't like the crime that they bring into our central neighborhoods.
244I have always felt safe and secure within the circle of our various mountain ranges.
245I have been beat up twice by ex-cons. I've had property stolen as well
246I have children, so it is important that we live in a community in which my children will be comfortable & safe.
247I have nearly been killed several times by motorists and screamed at for taking up space when biking on the road.
248I have seen that red light runners will not run the light where the cameras are, but at the very next intersection, three cars will go through after the light turns red.
249I haven't had anything stolen since I've lived here
250I know it isn't high on our list of priorities, however, I can see the neighborhoods declining as the graffiti problem grows. I carry paints in my car and as soon as I see any vandalism, I cover it up, over and over again. I live in midtown, but the problem is everywhere. Why don't the neighborhoods take care of cleaning up their own areas?
251I like being able to see the stars, but I'm concerned about safety and being able to see
252I like riding my bike as much as possible and I see more and more people riding. Bike paths like the ones on Columbus, Pima, 3rd street feel very safe. I would like to see more paths, wider ones and slower speed limits where bicyclists can feel safe. I would ride more if I felt safer.
253I like seeing more people biking and having the designated bike lanes to allow for safer biking.
254I like to bike and it makes me feel safer
255I like to commute to work by bike, but often feel like I am taking my life into my hands even on bicycle routes. I would love to see something like the 3rd street bikeway north of Speedway. I would also love it if there could be more of the stations for requesting a light change from one's bike. There are certain intersections along my route, where the light only changes if a car comes to the intersection because a bike is not heavy enough to make the light change.
256I like to exercise outdoors I'd like to see more kids out being active and not having to fear for their safety
257I like to ride my bicycle as much as possible. sometimes my route takes me to some hazardous crossings and streets.
258I like to ride my bike (for commuting and exercise) and feel safe while doing so.
259I live in a lovely home, underneath the Catalina Mountains. My daughter lives in a much smaller home, right near a commuter train, in a high crime district in California. Her home is on a postage stamp sized lot, mine is on an acre and a half. Her house cost her $650,000, mine would sell for about $350,000.
260I live in a pretty rough part of town and things are constantly stolen from our community. Sure, economic disparity is not a reason for someone to be involved in crime, but the correlation is undeniable. Local leaders should have take leadership and make liveable wages a priority.
261I live in central Tucson. Because of our proximity to major streets, because of the number of ill-maintained cheap rentals, we have so much crime.
262I live in midtown and don't like leaving my house everyday just hoping it doesn't get broken into.
263I live just west of downtown in the area most affected by the planned revitalization. So far, there is a wall and a few up-scale homes that no-one in the neighborhood could ever afford to purchase. There are so many wonderful things that could be happening: downtown as an all pedestrian area with restaurants, theater, music, outlets for traditional native crafts, the Stewart Boot Company (or similar), good art galleries (like Etherton), and trams to connect to all of it plus the Tucson Museum of Art and surrounding historic sites. 'A' Mtn. could be cleaned up and made into a safe place for walking, biking, and site seeing from trams for tourists, families, others who congregate - but no cars and no alcohol or drugs. The land west of the river should not just be another housing development. We need walkways, horse trails, an interactive science center, movie theaters, coffee shop, a Trader Joe's or Sunflower, a pool, a gym, boutique hotel, amenities that appeal to the neighborhood and to tourists alike. I personally resent the increase in my property taxes that was meant to reflect the higher values that Rio Nueve was going to create. I don't want lower taxes, I want Rio Nuevo!!
264I love being able to ride my bike to work on safe bike lanes.
265I love the outside eateries and the music at night. It's a great place to go and have fun with friends and enjoy the weather in a safe environment
266I love to pray for people and always want more freedom for that as well as more conservative political options so that we can have more safety.
267I now work resettling refugees. Very often a refugee's first job is at a restaurant. The buses don't run late (or early weekends) meaning refugees must bicycle home many miles late at night. A few months ago a carload of drunks hit a refugee in the head with a rock when leaving his late-night job downtown.
268I often don't feel safe in Tucson. Seems to be high crime. Dark streets, feels unsafe. Hard to find places for children to walk around without a parent and feel they are safe.
269I rate having better police protection above this but hope the parks and rec classes won't be completely phased out.
270I realize that they are trying to reduce lighting because of the observatory. However, I think poor lighting of streets makes areas more difficult to navigate at night. It also makes areas more susceptible to criminal activity.
271I really don't worry about being downtown or anywhere
272I ride my bike a lot, but I am scared of bike lanes that suddenly end on busy streets and fast traffic. More bike boulevards please!
273I ride my bike every day and appreciate bike facilities and routes that make cycling safer for riders of all ages and skill levels. I'd like to see more of this.
274I see a lot of accidents caused by our streets having left turns allowed on a regular green light. We need left turn arrows at every intersection. We have a lot of 'older' drivers here, as well as college kids, and taking the option of turning on a green light would make the streets safer.
275I see gangs in Tucson is our local terrist groups miss guided. If you in a gang, get them off the street. Uphold the 10 PM curfew on youth.
276I see no reason for ordinary citizens to have such weapons. I do not want to have to fear for myself, family, friends and fellow citizens going out in public places for fear someone who is unstable will open fire with one of these weapons.
277I see so many traffic accidents here. Speed is a problem. Lack of law enforcement officers on the roads is a problem. Cell phone use is a problem. In the last 3 days, for example, I have seen 4 accidents at a single intersection (Swan and Golf Links). This really needs to be addressed from multiple angles, and fast.
278I see too many of the white ghost bikes around town. Often the reason is because the road is just not engineered to have both bikes and cars occupying the same space. It isn't right for cyclists to hold up traffic or cause traffic to do dangerous moves to pass them, but cyclists should have safe places for commuting or pleasure.
279I should feel safe in all areas of Tucson
280I support less fraud and more agency transparency in government
281I suppose crime and gang activity grows as the population does. I'm sorry to see murder and gang violence at such a high rate. I want my family to be safe. I live in midtown where there is a lot of drugs and all the nasty things that go with that.
282I think graffiti is nice but should be put on paper - not walls or the art of other people
283I think it's important for government to have a role in ensuring safety and well-being. This means I'm willing to pay taxes that encourage safety, community well-being and the well-being of individuals.
284I think that the stop light cameras are too dangerous. People stop when they should go.
285I thoroughly enjoy being outside and I know that it is important that everyone has access to fresh air in a safe place. Tucson is woefully deficient in park land. Connecting the linear parks along all our waterways is a big step.
286I travel a lot. To have a vibrante walkable, safe urban core with the arts, the restaurants, the liveable community is priceless....
287I use to ride my bike 35 miles a week for exercise but stopped do to drivers (cars) not caring and cyclists who do not obey laws while riding.
288I want a safer and more vibrant downtown for all age groups.
289I want to be able to travel safely with my children on my bike wherever I go and right now that is not possible. I also believe that there is serious social inequity in where transportation dollars are spent. This results in an unhealthy, obese population, polluted air, degradation of the surrounding environment, and lower income populations being unable to ever get out of poverty because they are dependent on an EXPENSIVE auto industry. I would like to see the healthy choice be the easy choice.
290I want to feel safe in all areas of Tucson, but I also want to be free to defend myself
291I want to feel safer when parking and walking around at nighttime in these areas.
292I want to get around to more places without having to drive. better for the environment, easier, cheaper, less dangerous.
293I want to hop on a bus and go to the mall or the supermarket, and I want to know that a bus will come by every 15 minutes so that I can do that. I want to go out my door and ride a bike or walk for pleasure without getting mown down by cars.
294I want to live out my life here without fear; the Mexican people are wonderful, and the drug cartel must be stopped to both our countries benefit
295I went to private school on a scholarship, and while I'm certainly not low-income, I was poor compared to most of my classmates. Still, my parents are educated and liberal, and they exposed me to lots of parts of Tucson. I can't stand the rich kids and their parents I went to school with, who say things like, 'OMG, I'm on 22nd Street! I'm so lost in the ghetto' or 'You went to South Tucson? What, you want to get shot?' or 'Why would you shop in a place where nobody even speaks English?'
296I will not leave the building from dusk on without a vehicle because of druggies, homeless people, or gang bangers.
297I wish I felt a bit safer here.
298I wish I lived in a neighborhood with sidewalks and bike paths (not just lanes on the busy street) so I could take advantage of the gorgeous weather 9 mos of the year and walk or bike with my family to do my errands and be out in my community safely and healthfully.
299I work very closely with blind and deaf-blind people and see how the inconsistencies of pedestrian walkways cause a lot of confusion and at times cause blind and deaf-blind travelers to put themselves in danger
300I work with kids in CPS. The main reason for their involvement is parental drug use.
301I would feel safer if I didn't need to worry about the person next to me shooting me if he felt like it. No normal, civil society allows crazy people to carry high-powered guns whereever and whenever they want.
302I would like every person in the city to feel safe and cared for: every child should get a good education, and every person should have access to affordable, quality health care; a safe place to live; food security; and the opportunity for regular (preferably meaningful, useful) work.
303I would like to feel safe camping or hiking in my own country, but I do not, if I am south of Tucson.
304I would like to get around town easily and safely on a variety of public transportation like you can in cities such as Wash D.C., Portland, Boston, Philly.
305I would like to ride my bike to work but there is no safe route for a beginner like me.
306I would like to see less hassling of the walking population. I would also like to have less property crimes.
307I would like to see more of an emphasis on cleaning up the city. Cleaning up graffitti, littering, homeless shantis along the washes. Getting rid of panhandlers. Cleaning up vacant, decaying buildings. Restoring Tucson's treasures not just tearing them down and rebuilding new ones.
308I would like to see reasonable gun control.
309I would make automatic clips for guns illegal and unavailable except in the hands of law enforcement officers and military personnel who are in the business of protecting citizens.
310I would walk, bike, take public transportation, especially at night, if I felt safe
311I'd like my kids to be able to bike in the community and feel safe.
312I'd like to bicycle and walk more places. This means better security for bicycle parkers.
313I'm a hunter and a general gun enthusiast. The right to carry a firearm is an important right that Arizona has a strong commitment to upholding.
314I'm concerned for the kids I work with
315I'm originally from Idaho. There, I never worried about walking after dark, how safe the part of town I was driving in, and I could sleep with the windows open. It wasn't crime free, but much safer. And yes, there are a fair number of illegal aliens there, they do a lot of the farm work.
316I'm tired of being burglarized
317I've been mugged at gunpoint, and been burgled at least 3 times (home, work, and auto). I don't feel that I nor my belongings are safe here.
318I've lived here since 1984 and voted for each and every proposed freeway and improvement, but nothing ever happened... the Tucson traffic & freeway system is why there are so many dang accidents and road rage incidents!
319I've lived in Michigan and Ohio and I always felt safe and the neighborhoods I lived and worked in were always clean. In Tucson, I've had my car broken into, and we have an alarm system at home.
320I've lived in my current apartment in Tucson for more than 9 years ... most of my neighbors are alcoholics and drug users ... I can't tell you how many times it's taken MONTHS to get some action on people OBVIOUSLY using and selling drugs in my units. I believe that MORE POLICE would mean a SAFER TUCSON for me as I continue to age ... I'm already a Senior Citizen ...
321I've lived in my current house 8 years and it has been burglarized 4 times. My car was stolen from in front of a busy restaurant on Speedway in broad daylight. Do I have to convert my home and car into fortresses to live here? I've been pouring money into windows, gates, security doors, alarm systems, etc. I'd rather pay more taxes for better drug prevention/police work.
322If social services can help families, those families could help other families. By being with successful families who learned how to deal with their crisis, as well as move into a safer place, this could possibly offer hope to those who
323If this is a place for our families and children, we need to start with the most important issue-safety. If people do not feel safe here, then they will not come here.
324If we cannot provide aquality education to the children in our community, we all suffer in the long run. More crime, lower economic growth (and I do not mean population growtgh), higher long term social costs, all result from a poor education system.
325If we want to explore Tucson, the frustration of traffic makes it difficult to do so. Possibly make more and safer bike lanes
326If you were to believe the news paper we have more crime and violence than countries at war in Europe.
327Illegal Immigration/Drug Smuggling
328Illegal Mexicans
329Illegal aliens are a drain on health care and social sevices
330Illegal immigration is a crime. Pretending it is not and encouraging those who come here in violation of the law only adds to our problems
331Illegals
332Illegals come through our area making it a little scary
333Imigration issues
334Important to feel safe in our towns and homes and feel we can play safely
335Improve Safety and neighborhood watch programs
336Improve many of our crime ridden neighborhoods
337Improve public safety
338Improve road maintenance for easier transportation. Widen to add further bike lanes to lessen the possibility of accidents and increase alternative transportation
339Improve safety of citizens
340Improve the crime rate.
341Improve the ones to make them safer
342Improved law enforcement.
343In all the local parks I've visited, all have been well laid out, clean and provide what I feel to be a safe place for me to exercise outdoors. The people I encounter also add to the experience.
344In an area where children are poor, the swimming pool/water slide was 'terminated.' Kids don't have cars or at-home parents, so they need activities w/in safe walking distance
345In my neighborhood and most of them, there are no sidewalks so you have to use the street which is dangerous.
346In order to cross Toole Ave safely and to get to the buses. I need the buses for transportation because I don't have a car
347In reference to #1, but also to make Tucson safer for pedestrians. People shouldn't get hit by cars when they are crossing the street in the crosswalk with the green light. People drive crazily in Tucson.
348In spite of its reputation as a cycling friendly place so many bike paths are simply white lines on the street--only young, able and risk-tolerant people really feel safe. Plus cyclists so frequently break the law or don't seem to know what it is (can you ride your bike across the street in a ped crossing?)
349In times of economic hardship it would be nice to know my loved ones can at least enjoy time at the park without worry of harm by vagrants or illegal activities
350Inact gun control legislation within the city.
351Incorporating is important for community feel and slums are ugly and add to a fearful aspect of Tucson
352Increase police/safety officers
353Increase safety by expanding police/fire fighters
354Increase the number of youth and the opportunities for children so as to avoid gang participation
355Increased safety and opportunities to help reduce emissions
356Increasing the noise levels of planes is an outrage against the population that has chosen to live here. The presence of guns on campuses will soon be another crazy notion that will increase fear rather than reduce violence.
357Inexpensive, easy to park, relatively safe, but also great cultural opportunities downtown and on campus
358Investigate the Police and Fire Department retirement programs
359It creates a scary image.
360It feels like there are too many vehicles on the road. Not only does it now take longer to get places, but it feels more unsafe driving around. It feels like at any given moment I could get in an accident because so many people are all over the place trying to quickly get to their destination.
361It indicates studenthood, more dangerous, bigger chance of danger
362It is an unsafe, unhealthy property that is attracting crime
363It is dangerous in surrounding areas of campus. It affects you everyday
364It is important to me because the truth needs to be spread that politics (some) have hurt Tucson and the Southwest. (i.e Republican hate speech talk)
365It makes you feel more secure.
366It seems to make for safer travel.
367It will not be safe to live here if our young people cannot have a good education that enables them to make a good living.
368It would create a more itneresting sense of place and Tucson needs ot be a safer palce to bike
369It would make me feel more secure walking the cross walks
370It's corrupt to the core. There is only one person involved in the local government that I trust - Kosachek (sp). The mayor sucks - is only in it for what $'s he can put in his own pocket as are a bunch of the others.
371It's hard to find a job and crime is intolerable.
372It's hard to get around in Tucson and streets could be safer. The City/County has not been far-sighted in planning for transportation needs of a growing city. Money is also mis-spent on transportation projects that are not important to the masses, specifically, am really against the Moder Streetcar. There are also way too many busses on the road carrying 0 to2 people, especially in the northwest. These routes should be discontinued. Likewise, the small SunTran buses do not have a big ridership from my observations. SunTran is wasteful, polluting and does not serve its purpose as currently operated.
373It's horrific and one of the worst crime rates in the country. Something has to be done!
374It's not true
375It's out of hand. We need to do something to make our city safer
376It's quite open to live here as a lesbian--not that everyone likes us, but I feel very safe here.
377It's scary to get caught on Grant and Alvernon at night in traffic during a storm. Most of the medians do not have reflective stripes on them and the paint separating lanes is worn off, so you're almost driving blind.
378Justice and security for everyone
379Kids are our future. Send them to Fort Grant like in the olden days. No second chances!! If you belong to a gang your outta here.
380Kids get in trouble because they do not have safe, inexpensive and desirable places to go.
381Kids have a place to get distracted and not do drugs
382Kids need a place to feel safe
383Know those around me, increase personal safety, sense of ownership and belonging
384Lack of natural disasters
385Lack of security promotes fear/misunderstanding - thus some residents are and will relocate to safer regions
386Less Crime/Drugs/Poverty
387Less crime and graffiti
388Less drug activity, fewer burglaries
389Less drugs
390Less gangs
391Less guns
392Less sketch areas
393Less vagrancy and drug use on 4th ave and downtown
394Less violence
395Less worry about scamming
396Like to do 20 miles several times each week. Lack of bike lanes makes this sometimes dangerous.
397Linked to the growth of the town. I like to feel safe here, I want my children and grandchildren to feel like this is a safe place to live.
398Lived through some pretty major earthquakes and a major flood. The fact that there's no tornadoes, earthquakes, major floods- is a pretty nice redeeming quality of a place to put down roots.
399Living in Tucson is dangerous
400Living in a clean, safe environment
401Local government seems a combination of corrupt and incompetent
402Low crime
403Low visibility could cause an accident
404Lower crime rate
405Lower crime through job creation & better education
406Lower the homicide rate
407MY tax money is paying for planning projects that I don't want (and I suspect I am not alone). Rio Nuevo has become an industry of its own, paying outside contractors money that we need to be spending on education and police/fire services.
408Make it harder to purchase guns
409Make people more responsible for their actions - no tolerance, do the time for the crime, more communtiy service options!
410Make safe bike paths that link all parts of the city. This is a great way to improve health, too.
411Make the community safer
412Make the streets safe for bicyclists.
413Makes downtown look dingy and attracts problems
414Makes you feel safer and more included
415Many issues have been happening
416Many of our streets are in desperate need of repaving. Many need shoulders and bike lanes. This would improve the traffic flow and hopefully reduce accidents.
417Many of the streets in Tucson are filled with pot holes and other issues of the sort. Also, the intersection at I-10 & Speedway has many accidents and needs to have double turn lanes with better timed lights!
418Many of us see and even interact with the homeless population in Tucson on a regular basis. Many of these men and women are veterans, have substance abuse problems, or struggle with mental illness. If we invested more funding and resources in supporting this population, we could decrease the number of people in the emergency rooms and in prison. This would benefit us all in the long-run as we would see a decrease in crime, and an increase in the number of people contributing positively to the community by working and paying taxes.
419Many people don't care and the usage of blood is daily
420Many pot holes causing accidents
421Many streets do not have lights and I'm afraid to walk at night.
422Mexico has to deal with America's drug problem; gang violence sends citizens fleeing also. Low wages there
423Military aircraft endanger citizens and denigrates the quality of life of people who live and work in the central city, and is destructive to the environment. If indeed the City of Tucson is serious about strengthening the central city and IGT is serious about encouraging greater densities in the central city, then this issue must be confronted and the planes must be re-directed away from the most populated areas.
424Mini-dorms in R-1 are unsafe, not neighborhood friendly and in the long run not good for the University community
425More ability to move about the community safely!
426More and safer bike lanes including riverside paths out to Savino Canyone road.
427More and safer bike routes
428More crime control
429More funding for law enforcement
430More graffti removal
431More lively and beautiful and safe downtown area
432More parts of Tucson don't make me feel as safe because of the presentation of buildings etc. Oro Valley is great at this
433More police needed. Get rid of the guns and drugs.
434More policemen
435More prevention to help our community stay away from these types of crime. Specifically for youth.
436More securtiy in the areas where my children hangout
437Most of the TUSD schools, and public parks, have been fitted with the newer style of playground equipment. This is the safer option, but due to heavy use & sun exposure the equipment, slides specifically, crack & become dangerous. I'd like to see these kept in better repair. The PTAs & PTOs should be encouraged to raise money, hopefully subsidised by the city or even a greant, to help get shade screens for each jungle gym on the property. This would help extend the life of the equipment. But also important would be the repair/replacement of the cracked or broken equipment.
438Much more anti-crime, anti-gang prevention efforts...
439My children and aging parents are in a safe environment.
440My children did not receive as good educations as I did in my youth. Our educational outcomes are terrible and this affects the quality of life here: increased crime, drives away businesses, many youth with limited opportunities
441My community provides a safe environment for being active
442My friend lives right across the wash and my mother wont let me go across becaue it is unsafe
443My grandchildren are growing up here. Step back and look at the big picture. Our education system is worse, gangs are rampant, air quality is disgusting. Set priorities and do something about it.
444My high school-aged child rides the bus and has experienced some very uncomfortable situations. I would like to see better service and more attention given to behaviors taking place on the bus. We all want our children to view public transportation positively.
445My husband and I are both cyclists and outdoor-sy people. We both enjoy social cycling and my husband races as well. The sport is really important to us, so the other cyclists we have met here, as well as cycling organizations makes Tucson a place we like to live in. Safety is important also, and Tucson has a relatively good infrastructure in roads with bike lanes.
446My neighborhood has way too many break-ins and it sometimes takes as long as 8 hours for the officers to arrive. Three break-ins within a two block area in a recent week
447My opinion buses are the biggest traffic hazard on the road either make all buses pull off the road or get rid of them!!
448My son is a police officer.
449Need better/harsher laws to be able to enforce.
450Need less crime
451Neighborhood coalitions - increase safety and support activities
452No budget cuts to police or fire. If we are to attract better people to be police officers we must offer a pay that is competitive. We need the finest to make if they are making day to day decisions that are life changing. If we want better fire personal we must offer the best training and pay in Southern Arizona.
453No gangs
454No riots. 4th Ave after the college basketball championship game doesnt count. Tucson is pretty integrated.
455Not safe in too many places
456Not unlike most places, there are extremes of poverty and wealth here, and the city is pretty segregated. Although less segregated than out East. I would like there to be less of an income gap -- affects public health and safety. A huge homeless population. Drug scene.
457Nothing much going on downtown, and if there is, it's not very safe
458Obviously people will still do bad things, but the laws can change for their punishments
459On the sad, eventful day of January 8, 2011 our entire lives as individuals and as a community changed forever. Even through the devastation which happen just a few miles from where I live, our community came together to support those who needed support. There weren't any riots, there wasn't any two hour stand off, there weren't hostages that had to be negotiated. Our true heroes took action to make sure no further harm would come to others. We lost lives, wounded many but every heart went out to the victims and their families. We came together to protect the integrity of a young girls funeral and stood peacefully to block any uninvited guests. We are not monsters the world has made us out to be, because we, as Arizonians know the truth about what a great community we live in.
460One of the more organized and safer areas of Tucson. They offer sustainability opinions to preserve for the future
461Our environment in Tucson is unique. The mountains and the desert never fail to give me joy. The many shades of gray and green after a rain, and smell of the desert when it rains, touch me deeply inside. I grew up in Tucson, in a house off Lester and Pima, and the smell of the desert when it rains, reminds me of that simpler and safer time. The dry air of Tucson, can only be appreciated when you have to go someplace where the bath towels don't dry overnight, or mold grows around the outside of the house. Sometimes our air is so fine, on a spring night with the orange trees in bloom, that it is almost like fine wine.
462Our roads are a little outdated and can be hazardous for cars (pot holes) and there are hardly any sufficient bike lanes for cyclists.
463Out of all of the places I have lived (Denver, Seattle, Minneapolis), Tucson has the most crime. I live in a nice gated community. We have had home break ins as well as car break ins.
464Out of town visitors are often greeted by unpleasant images that reflect violence and lots of gang activity. Many S. Az visitors only see Tucson from the car and what they see is many areas of town is horrific. We must clean it up!
465Over 140 Gangs
466PROTECTED BY GOOD PEOPLE AND SYSTEMS
467Part of the aforementioned problem with the structure of our communities may be, in part, due to a feeling of helplessness. What if we could have police and other safety precincts at the local level so that the community knew its officers, firefighters, and aid workers better, and vice versa? We should take our small-town feel to the neighborhood level, as well.
468People are starting to be afraid to go out at night. The meth, gangs, smugglers, etc. are giving this town a bad name and making it so that people are having second thoughts about moving here.
469People feel so entitled sometimes. They act like they are the only ones who are important. It's really the red light running that is a problem.
470People get hurt tripping
471People go there for the first time and get scared
472Personally difficult to teach science to hungry children while watching millions of dollars wasted on Rio Niente and Rainbow Bridge and corruption.
473Police and Court
474Police and firemen should be the #1 priority of the city. Ensuring the public safety should come before any other city responsibility. When the city budget is in trouble, the city threatens us with cutting public safety. This is wrong! Parks, libraries, perks for city employees ... these things should be put on the cutting board instead of our police and firemen.
475Police reaction to UofA students
476Poor education structure makes it more difficult for younger people to be successful. If the 'fail,' then promotes 'bad' cycles and more crime.
477Poor quality employees and increase in crime (poverty correlates with crime) - inadequate funding and poor parenting contribute to these problems
478Poorly maintained properties with a preponderance of junk and refuse devalue neighborhoods, contribute to vermin, vandalism, and crime. Represent a lack of pride and respect.
479Poverty creates other social problems (e.g. criminal activity, higher mortality rate, obesity, diseases)
480Protect the children
481Provide appropriate law enforcement for the community.
482Provides interesting activities and friends in secure surroundings
483Public Safety
484Public Safety awareness and compliance
485Public safety is paramount and we are no more than mediocre
486Public safety is the most important core component/service of a safe and healthy community.
487Put efforts into keeping Tucson safe and clean.
488Quieter, safer, cleaner, etc.
489Rapid response of first responders, reduce crime (major and minor)
490Recent tragedy at Safeway; tragic flow of weapons south to Mexico; risky freedom to buy, carry guns in public, schools.
491Recently, our community has often showed that there are small pockets of hatred that often spurs crime. I would like the hatred and crime to disappear.
492Reduce Crime
493Reduce crime
494Reduce crime & graffiti & increase ads on heroes and fallen officers and his/her family
495Reduce huge economic disparities by generating genuine economic development, not just marketing Tucson to low wage industries and call centers, and developing a real social safety net for the many members of our community who are hungry and hurting.
496Reduce the amont of crime
497Reduce the ultra conservative retoric and resulting laws that hurt education funding, give rights to automatic weapons owners.
498Reduce theft
499Reduced crime
500Reduced crime and vandalism
501Reduction in crime
502Riding a bicycle through the downtown area is horrible. Confusing one way streets make it hard to navigate, congested parallel parking makes bikes harder to be seen, small lanes and trolley tracks make it dangerous. Downtown is the worst place in the city for bicycles, and also one of the most popular.
503Rio nuevo, all of it needs to be ended and all the free or super cheap rent for galleries and museums needs to stop and 4th ave needs cleaned up very scary and nasty!!
504Robust police department with high standards. A high percentage of applicants do not make it out of the academy which is good. Officers are professional and good at their job. This will change however as the city further guts the police force.
505SAFETY
506SAFETY FOR ALL
507SB1070, HB2281, english only, teachers with accents, hate speach, etc. I'm scare for my safety.
508Safe and fun downtown....
509Safe and mobile
510Safe communities
511Safe left turns
512Safe places for Youth
513Safe streets for cycling and walking
514Safe to exercise without watching for cars
515Safer Bicycling facilities
516Safer bicycle routes
517Safer biking in downtown
518Safer community
519Safer environment
520Safer for all.
521Safer roads
522Safer streets
523Safer to ride.
524Safety
525Safety downtown and in neighborhoods
526Safety in travel
527Safety is an issue affecting the region. The same issues exist here as in other large cities, however, it is instigaged by underlying social economic issues which need attention. for example, what is the make up of the U of A? does it reflect the compositon of our community/state? Our school system is struggling. Where is the emphasis on dealing with these issues. We do not need more prisons.
528Safety of all
529Safety of others
530Safety of the city
531Safety of walking and cycling in downtown, university and 4th ave
532Safety with catching or coming back from the bus from dusk on
533Safety, ease of transportation, poor roads and traffic control make traffic difficult
534Safety, fitness, outdoor recreation opportunities, pollution reduction
535Safety, people are quick to anger
536Safety, pride in the city
537Safety, respect and kindness are values that the whole world should live by- we can be the leaders.
538Safety, timeliness
539Safety.
540Safey
541Saftey
542Safty in South Tucson
543Scary without lights, driving and walking feels unsafe
544Secure our borders from the violence and drugs. We should not have to fund medical aid, welfare and education on people who are not citizens of the US.
545Secure our borders!
546Security
547Since the Loughlin killings, I would like our schools to undergo a violence prevention and teacher training to identify at risk youth.
548Some areas of Tucson are not the most aesthetically pleasing as well as are not very safe to be in. We need to figure out how to address and aid our homeless population
549Some don't work causing more accidents
550Some how our community must find a way to negotiate this wave of fear and anger that finds expression in the fantasy that if everyone carried a gun we would be safer.
551Some neighborhoods are high crime areas, and most of this is attributed to the drugs.
552Some of the greatest danger and biggest inconvenience is the glass and gravel in the roads. Imagine coming down Mt. Lemmon, hitting a patch of broken glass, and trying to hang on at 30-40 mph while riding on your bike's rims.
553Some people here at the Tucson House are afraid to go out after dark. Not me, I'm going to keep on living my life. I'm a rebel.
554Some police and officials do discriminate and profile. I am not hispanic, but I am in a position to see this often. People pulled over for silly reasons, i.e. vehicle is reported as stolen and it really is a mis entry by the police officer, (twice this month!) then are required to produce proof of citizenship, etc...
555Sometimes, not always, bad things happen and then most people in the community talk about it
556Starting at a neighborhood level, it is a symbol of our desire to maintain safe/secure/attractive neighborhoods
557Step up law enforcement on illegal immigrants
558Stop encouraging growth. More people require more services, more infrastrastructure and more jobs. What's the advantage to the current residents. This city is basically retirement and UoA and snowbirds ... and unfortunately the distribution center for drugs and undocumented immigrants. Get rid of the gun and the gem show as they mean little to the majority of residents. Having the gun show is an embarassment.
559Stop the racism and crime
560Stricter gun control with stiffer penalties
561Students are not very safe with all the gangs
562THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH POLICE OFFICERS AND THE CRIME RATE IS OUTRAGEOUS
563Tagging decreases the beauty of the city and crime affects quality of life
564That they are trying to stop bully drug dealers
565The 4th street Street Fair is a good example, and is something I look forward to attending each year. It provides a experience to get out in what I feel to be a safe venue, which allows me to shop, see the new products that local business has to offer, and add money into the local economy. Again, the people I encounter add to the experience.
566The Oro Valley area - and master plan is what attracts me to the area. I want clean, maintained and safe community. I want services for young and seniors. I want a community that believes in quality.
567The authorities cannot do it all
568The border is causing a huge problem for this area through the importation of criminal activity both in people transfers and drug activity. It is giving the region a bad reputation and will be a problem when the economy recovers due to lack of needed labor. We need a guest worker program and a way to separate the legal residents/guest workers from the illegal entrants so that we remove the incentive for illegal entry because it will not be possible to get a job without proper documention only obtainable through legal entry.
569The busses are never on time. The streets are in awful shape. There is no streetlights / sidewalks and dangerous to walk and ride a bike at night. GIVE me a freeway to get across town quicker...WHAT era is Tucson existing in????
570The cameras on River and Oracle are a trap for motorists. This needs to be investigated. It is borderline illegal what they are doing. Any miscalculation of time and we must pay a huge price. The lines are misleading!
571The campus is quite beautiful and safe. There are numerous activities, including sporting events, performances, and public lectures. It is also surrounded by interesting and fun places, like University Avenue and nearby 4th street.
572The city is run down, trashy, and filled with thugs.
573The concern about criminal activities impedes interaction and engagement with the community.
574The continued flow of illegal immigrants and the lack of city involvement to fix the problem is very confusing. It seems like our police departments should enforce the laws.
575The corrider between Tucson and Phoenix on I-10 is very dangerous and unreliable. I think our region desperately needs high speed trains as an option. It would help our tourist economy as well as the many retired folks who would like an option to driving to Phoenix.
576The crime and safety
577The crime is horrible in Tucson
578The crime is horrible. it is the reson i want to leave
579The crime rate in Tucson is directly related to unsecure borders, illegal immigration and drug smuggling. People do no feel safe in this community as a result of this issue.
580The crime rate is terrible. There are several murders a month. There are problems with gangs. I don't feel safe in downtown Tucson after dark.
581The crime rate that is growing locally as a result of the Federal Governments lack of control of our border.
582The crime rates are extremely high for a city this size. This most certainly could be improved.
583The driving between the two cities is getting very congested and it would be great to have a safe convenient way to travel between the two.
584The energy and feel of gathering together to do something active. I am a bike cyclist and generally try to commute my 10 mile distance to work. People who are advocating for more community and accessibility and public space are the ones who also push for safer and better bike use. Also, with events like Maynard's, there is a shared effort by the business community to support and grow the use and enjoyment of downtown.
585The failure to address these issues has degenerated a wonderful community into a growing unsafe city/community/region that is a cancer that will destroy Southern Arizona!!!
586The far east side has beautiful neighborhoods, low crime rates and a great community mentality. People look after each other in this community.
587The fear of homeless, immigrants, and 'criminals.'
588The flooding in the streets when it rains is dangerous and a waste of water that could be collected and put to better use, and better roads would mean safer conditions for those who have to drive a lot.
589The graffiti
590The high crime.
591The high number of dirtbags and criminals affect the City and my life negatively in many ways.
592The homicides and home invasions in Tucson occur on an all too frequent basis. Finding ways to combat violence would be a great contribution to our society.
593The image that Tucson is a dangerous place to live because of the border
594The intersection traffic lights need to be motion detected. Coming off Ruthrauff and the freeway, you will sit there for 5 minutes waiting for the green light to make a left turn. Scarey real late at night and a car pulls next to you with dark windows.
595The killings at Safeway require a long term community response.
596The noise, speed, and congestion on city streets are stress-causing. The pollution is bad for our health and makes our air look and smell bad. Auto collisions are a real and all-too-frequent danger in this city. // #4. Urban blight (the graffiti, vandalism, abandoned lots and buildings, and ugly infrastructure installments) is depressing, and results in residents having less pride in our city, and treating our community with less respect.
597The number of murders, home invasions and robberies seems tied to drug addition/ddrug sales. We need both enforcement and treatment for addicts.
598The only thing to do on the weekend is go to the La Encantada area, the movies or do outdoor activities (which are out during the summer months). Downtown is still too dangerous. I would never take my family there. Parking at the UA is a pain so we don't go there either.
599The overwhelming police presence
600The problem is unstabilizing and hurting our economy/tourism/safety
601The right to keep and bare arms.
602The risk of my own children getting in the line of fire, being hit by an intoxicated driver or being transported by an unsecured driver.
603The roads are overcrowded, making them tedious and unsafe. We have made great strides for bicycles. We need better public transportation.
604The safety and security of the community.
605The safety in the building
606The situation with our border is critical to reducing crime and removing a major cause of much local expense for law enforcement.
607The state legislature and governor are neanderthals - under funding education, allowing guns everywhere, no concern for the environment, etc.
608The streetcar project is a good start, but moreflexible transportation options are necessary for our city. Adding safe sidewalks in more areas of town is necessary to get people walking and out of cars.
609The threat of being victimized lowers my quality of life. Having to be ever vigilant and cautious makes me distrust strangers. It makes me sad that we as a society/government are not doing more to prevent crimes and ruined lives by redirecting people who are at risk of becoming criminals, and that people who are turning to crime are not getting the rehabilitation they need.
610The tourism misconception that our area is not safe to visit
611The very things I love most about our schools are getting shut down while experienced teachers are being laid off to cut expenses. There doesn't seem to be any thinking toward the future and the benefits of having top rated school districts - they bring in higher paying jobs and more educated adults while reducing crime rates.
612The violence of the drug-related gang issues are a blight on this area
613The walking paths/sidewalks are intermittent. Having attempted to walk around Tucson with my husband, we could sometimes be able to walk safely on a sidewalksfor a couple of blocks, then be forced onto gravel for a few blocks, and back to a sidewalk etc. Tucson isn't a walking friendly town.
614The way to lower crime is to create new jobs. Jobs mean training and education. Happily employed people do not turn to crime.
615There are HUGE potholes all over my neighborhood (Blenman-Elm). They are an eyesore and a safety hazard.
616There are a lot of bicyclists and the roads are dangerous
617There are events and businesses that I don't visit simply because I do not feel the adequate presence of police/security personnel. I don't have a solution for this, however, I can say that I'd participate more and surely add more money into the local economy if I felt safe venturing into certain parts of town by myself.
618There are parts of town where even I don't feel safe and I was raised in a similar environment in Honduras.
619There are several safe communities to live in. We live in a middle class home where we feel very safe.
620There are so many areas that I won't ride into because there are either no bike paths or the adjacent traffic makes me feel unsafe. We do not live near 3rd - but more of that on the Eastside would make me happy.
621There are so many gang elements corrupting our youth ad damaging our property and environment
622There are some areas in Tucson where I don't feel completely safe
623There are some areas in town that have a lot of drugs and safety issues. I think Tucson needs to focus on these issues because it will help the greater part of our community. For example, I live at Alvernon and Grant. This intersection is AWFUL. It's full of big box stores and there are many drug arrests in the area. However, I love the location. I am 5 minutes from the Rillito, 10 from St. Philips plaza, 5 mins from Trader Joes, 2 mins from the Botanical Gardens, etc. This is such a great area of town, but the crime is holding it back. I am certain there are other areas with this concern as well.
624There are some parts of Tucson that us college students do not want to venture into because they appear unsafe. This occurs in every large city, but steps can be taken to improve this
625There are the City and the Areas North of the city. There is no sense of a Tucson metropolitan area as exemplified by the City Council's inability to have any leadership or planning. We are 'gated communities' in the Foothills to protect again the crime and poverty of the city.
626There are too many areas where Tucson is in the tip ten for the worst demographics and I would like to see us as the best in education for all, the best in lifestyle, the least in addiction - we were the 9th drunkest city in America this year, the best in the gap between the rich and poor instead of the worst, least juvenile arrest - we were #9 for the most, etc.
627There are too many police harassing people. I have never lived in a community with so many police.
628There are way too many fatal accidents in Tucson. I'd like to see ways to make our roadways safer!
629There has to be placement for these poor people. they have to be removed from alleys for the safety of all.
630There is a lot of crime in Tucson. we need more police officers so that they can patrol neighborhoods and high crime areas more often.
631There is a lot of crime in our streets. We need to find ways to engage the youth and keep them off the streets
632There is a lot of pedestrian, bike, trolley and cars that make this a scary area.
633There is a lot of violence
634There is no other country including Mexico itself that does not have severe laws to protect their border against invasion from another country. Without proper border control there is no question that crime and drug use will continue to grow here and makes one wonder how long it will be before we turn into one of the 3 top crime cities in the country. Particularly will this be true because of the constant increases in the cost of increasing the size of our police forces and the cost of supporting thousands of unemployed.
635There is too much fear and too much crime. Why do we need security alarm systems? And worry about our good people that can not affort extra protection?
636There seems to be a decrease in neighborhood activities and events. I'd like to see people meeting their neighbors and engaging with their community more (which would also result in decrease crime).
637There seems to be an attitude that crime is o.k. unless it affects me.
638There seems to be an increase in crime/criminal activity all over Tucson. This is important to me because I have been a victim of crime (both physical and through property damage). Also, I am a homeowner and it worries me to see an increase in vandalism in my mid-town neighborhood.
639These eye sores are offensive & do not give a good impression to those visiting our community-they breed crime and ill repair
640These things cause fear and I want to feel safe in my city
641These vermin taint our beloved society like boll weevils in pancake mix. They breed faster than rats, fail (refuse) to learn English, and work tax-free. (Some even steal Mexican-Americans' identities - that's a no-no)
642They are dangerous, threaten the peace and welfare of others and prey on young children.
643Things may have improved a lot in the 10 years since I moved away from Tucson, but the flooding was terrible if it rained even slightly hard.
644This bonds us and helps keep Tucson safe, clean and strong which can only help us grow.
645This is important because it's good to live in a safe and clean environment
646This may tie to gangs/problems with street people - selling of spray paint; crime watches. catching people doing this; this is destructive and brings down property values.
647This point benefitst the community as a whole. I personally would enjoy a safer and cleaner Tucson even more than I already do.
648Ti would be nice to have a pedestrian friendly licely pretty downtown where people could walk in the evening fell safe and enjoy restaurants music arts and other fun events. would be nice to have a destination downtown to be proud of. i really think it is important to have aplace to stroll like in European cities. nice outdoor performance spaces.
649To encourage a healthy city physical fitness wise, safety wise and environment wise (discourage car use)
650To have a safer community and to support the development of it. To not make anit-immigration laws
651To have lighting at night and to have better security
652To help prevent gangs.
653To keep these people involved in the community and giving them healthy and safe places to do activities
654To not be abused sexually or physically
655Too many people have to give up expectation of adequate wages in order to live here. Too many working people are near poverty. Too much incentive for petty crime.
656Too many young people with time on their hands to hurt themselves and others
657Too much drugs leading to crime
658Too much graffti still exists.
659Too much hate, teens in gangs
660Too much petty crime. I've been here 2 months and already had my car broken into and my GPS stolen. Now I have no idea how to get any where.
661Tougher on crime
662Town isn't too spread out. The city is relatively clean, low in crime, bike friendly, and neighborhood friendly throughout.
663Traffic & crime watch camera on every interesection
664Traffic congestion is getting worse every year. This wastes time and gas, pollutes the air, and makes bicycling less safe. Please put a $2/gallon (well ok, maybe less) city tax on gas as an incentive to get people out of their cars.
665Traffic is crazy and will get worse...it is not safe to walk or bike along our major roads. It would also improve peoples ability to use alternative transportation to get to work - and improve our air quality if that happens.
666Traffic is still manageable and rush hour is not a threat to your life.
667Transportation is freedom, commerce, and safety. We need to explore a cross town semi-limited access parkway to allow that opprotunity for longer travel and allow the surface streets be access to businesses and residential.
668Transportation is too time consuming, not wide enough streets to accomodate more than one lane each way, roads are in deplorable condition causing unneccessary wear and tear on cars, creating safety hazards and generally a tremendous source of embarassment!
669Tucson citizens deserve enough law enforcement officers to properly and effectively execute the tasks required of them.
670Tucson feels like a real town. It's not a place where growth is out of control and you see the same stores and eateries around every corner. It feels real. On the down side, it seems petty crime is out of control. That's a HUGE downside.
671Tucson has a large problem with gangs and fights breaking out. It's a place where I want to feel safe, but I do not
672Tucson has a lot of problems, but is unwilling to make investments in its infrastructure in order to fix problems and prepare for a good future. Taxes are way too low and too many funds are wasted on anti-immigration and 'securing the border'. Unless leaders take draconian measures to stop Mexicans coming to Tucson, their efforts aren't going to make a difference. Perhaps it is better to save money by cutting back on border security and have a few more people to work as dishwashers and gardeners. Furthermore, Tucson needs to stop urban sprawl. Delivering services to remote parts of the city are a waste. The city should learn how to build up, not build out. Outlying regions should be de-annexed.
673Tucson has grown a lot in the past decade, but the infrastructure of the city has failed to keep pace with the expansion. City streets are to narrow with too few lanes, traffic lights are not timed appropriately to ensure the best flow of traffic. And the bike lanes are not given enough clearance to ensure the safety of the bicylcist.
674Tucson is a prime example of a sprawling western city. Encouraging compact central communities with safe walking and biking districts and proximity to restaurants and bars is desirable.
675Tucson is full of sketch places
676Tucson is not a safe place by any means. You hear of shootings, robberies and all other types of crime at all hours of the day. This town needs to step up it's game on catching criminals and stop setting up speed traps for the avergage Joe trying to make an honest living.
677Tucson is the perfect place to ride a bike. Traffic is so hard to negotiate it is not safe to ride as a commuter in town. With strategic hawking lights bike routes could make safe, fast commutes available from Oracle to Craycroft easily.
678Tucson is very pocketed, i.e., good area, bad area, good area, bad area, etc. As a result, my neighbors and others do not want to leave their neighborhoods at night.
679Tucson looks low-income, run-down business fronts, unsafe image, people don't want to stay so we have a revolving community
680Tucson may be relatively bike-friendly, but it is still a dangerous place to bike. Need more trans-city routes, also light rail to Phoenix to reduce dangerous driving conditions and traffic congestion.
681Tucson should outlaw the use of phones while driving. Driving here is a challenge to begin with phones just compoound the problem.
682Tucson used to thrive on having winter visitors, retirees, and tourists wanting to explore desert living. Violent crimes, such as those related to the border and deranged students, make residents fear for their own safety. Law enforcement should be free from budget cuts, so that Tucson could claim to be the safest city in the nation.
683Tucson will never be the area you want to raise a family as long as the crime rate continues to clime which is due mostly to drugs and the border crossings.
684Tucson's crime rate coupled with areas of blight make it less attractive. There is a growing gap between wealthy and poor, and this will inevitably lead to more crime. TPD is a great asset to the community; leadership is concerned about people. But they become less effective when all they can do is react instead of interact.
685Uneducated people are more likely to be jobless, homeless, or criminals
686Unless you are on the north side or on campus, this city feels like it's looking for you to let your guard down. I know too many people that have had run ins with unsavory people looking to take what we've worked hard for. There is unfortunately a large population here that carries the attitude that if you are white you probably need to be robbed.
687Unsafe Washes
688Unsightly and abusive of our planet and surrounding community. Disrespectful
689Upscale safer
690Violence
691Water use (4. Education, 5. Crime, 6. Illegal Immigration)
692Way to dark in my area.
693We absolutely need to make it a bigger penalty for offenders.
694We all have a responsibility, and perhaps an opportunity, to prevent gun violence.
695We all want good schools and safer neighborhoods. Groups of seniors may volunteer to take kids to the park after school, while parents work. Artists or actors could teach painting or read stories. Everyone has a gift.
696We could have an accident
697We do not have adequate highway travel for a city the size of Tucson. I work in 9-1-1 fire/medical dispatch and we see an enormous amount of motor vehicle accidents, pedestrians struck, bicyclists struck, etc. I lived in Rochester, NY for 5yrs - a smaller city than Tucson - and they have at least 3 major highways that make travel from each corner of the city and its suburbs fast and convenient - one highway circles the downtown area, one runs north/south and one runs east/west. Our 16+ lane intersections that run through the city limits are hazardous and not as efficient as travel along I10 offers.
698We have some safe and beautiful communities
699We have such a terrific climate for outdoor activities, but it's often dangerous to walk/bike around town.
700We have way too much crime in Tucson. I believe we need to keep law enforcement strong and back any financial decisions it takes to do so.
701We need more parks, safe places for kids/families. If we don't save it now, it will be lost
702We need to lead the country in framing immigration law that addresses systemic reasons for the lack of employment in Mexico, and criminal/corporate corruption on both sides of the border. We must practice valuing the differences that mix here, so we can innovate out of the box we currently play our politics in.
703We need to make this community safer
704We need to rethink about who is in charge of our children everday. The gangs and drugs
705We need to secure the borders so we can feel safe.
706We need to secure the borders.
707We need to shore up our neighborhood connections so we are not afraid to go out and lead our lives
708We pay a ton of money for our kids to attend the U of A. Both have had bikes stolen. One has had an apt. broken in to. It seems the same group of people prey on students year to year. This is the first year the U of A is taking bike theft seriously.
709We shouldn't be afraid to walk at night
710We want to feel safe in our homes
711We want to make roads better and safer
712Weather - Sunshine for the majority of the year - ability to do outdoor activities such as running and biking on clean, safe paths.
713When I moved to Tucson, my wife said it was a dump. I told her it had character. After living here for a while, I agree with her, alarge chunk of Tucson is a dump. But it doesn't have to be. These same areas do add character but need to be restored in order to attract people to the area and give them a sense of security.
714When walking in the dark or driving you can not see anything unless you have a flash light or high beams
715When we moved to Tucson in 1965 we so much enjoyed the Hispanic influence here, the colorful housing that was so much a part of Tucson, the joy of visiting a pleasant neighbor city to the South: A peaceful Nogales Sonora. We loved taking visitors from out of state to visit Nogales and see the vibrant colorful community that it was. When visitors would ask 'Are we safe walking the streets of Nogales?' I would be proud to say, 'I feel much more safe walking the streets of Nogales Sonora then I would be walking the streets of my home town of Detroit.'
716While I am aware that this needs to be addressed at the Federal level first, it also needs to be addressed here in Tucson and southern AZ. It is important to me because it affects the entire quality of life here: working citizens make lower wages than in comparable positions elsewhere, we spend too much on health and other care for non-citizens, and the quality of our outdoor places on the borders is degraded and dangerous because of the illegal activities there.
717While I think the region has invested in cycling, it has mostly been for experienced riders. I would like to see more investment on bicycle conditions for ALL cyclists such as urban greenways, bicycle boulevards, safe crossings etc.
718While much needs to be done to improve and maintain the River Parks in the Tucson region. This, I believe, is one of its best resources. Public safety and access could be improved to make these areas more desirable by citizens.
719While working in elementary schools, I was blown away that much more than half of the parents drove their children to school. It is ridiculous and makes for a dangerous & congested parking lot. If parents could be convinced that their child could safely arrive at school on a bike, they would be much more likely to allow and trust their child to arrive by their own power. --Maybe the parents would go too! We all know about the awful health of many students. Just think how much better it could be if we could create more ways to encourage kids to be active, like telling them they can be independent and get themselves where they need/want to be on their own. It's almost as good as driving because you are totally in charge, even if you are only 8.
720Who wants to drive on cracked, bumpy, pot-holed roads and roads that are too crowded because they were not built for so many drivers? We passed bonds in the 1980s for road projects that still have not been done. And I don't understand why drivers are so rude and feel entitled to speeding and driving recklessly. That attitude needs to be changed.
721With the exception of a few communities, it's nice to know that I can travel, walk, shop, recreate, and etc. and know that there is little that could actually harm me. I also know that people look out for each other and would help prevent harmful events and/ or acts.
722Without safety a lot of bad things can happen
723Would like to feel safer on the streets
724You don't want your kid to get bullied or have drugs sold to them
