Notes from the May - June 2009
Tour of Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and England

London, England - June 23
Building decorations add flair

Leicester Square Gardens

After our Original City Tour 24 hour tickets expired, we had lunch and then walked down to the National Gallery.

The Gallery does not allow photographs inside. We spend almost two hours viewing a broad collection
of some the best art work in the world. Kenith particularly enjoyed the Rembrandts portraits. I was
struck by a Renoir picture called `Gladioli in a Vase` There were many groups of school
children in uniforms sitting on the floor in front of a world class picture, hearing from a museum
docent about what they were seeing.

The Gallery faces Trafalgar Square

The National Portrait Gallery is nearby. Special exhibitions spark interest

Following our time at the National Gallery, we walked down Whitehall Rd. and saw this intereting monument.

The Cenotaph honors all those from the British Empire who gave their lives in World Wars I and II.
Next, we toured the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms just off
Whitehall Rd. No pictures allowed. These rooms comprised the actual location of British
high command during WWII. The site had rooms for Churchill and his wife Clementine as well as a full
complement of map, communication, status board, sleeping, eating and meeting rooms, all below ground.
