Increase transportation convenience and reduce time spent in travel.   Top  (DI)

"We live in a community of car convenience . . ."
"When I go into Tucson, I spent a lot of time sitting in traffic."
"Tucson is so spread out and unfriendly to non car users. It desperately needs an updated metro style public transportation system to enable people to better access it's gifts."
"Congested roads lead to lost time and accidents."
"I tend not to socialize or attend activities on the other side of town because of the time involved in getting across town."
"We live on the east side and it takes forever just to get to the westside to get on I-10."
"As we grow, it's going to take longer to get everywhere. Buses, bike lanes, carpools only do so much . . . "
"I want to be able to travel in an efficient, safe, rapid manner to various destinations around town."

Improve and increase mass transit. Increase viable transportation options.   Top  (DI)

"Make public transit so people want to use it. Change its image so it's not only used out of necessity, but as a choice."
"Wish I could at least have the option to take public transportation twice a week to work, and wish there was safe, reliable public transportation from the Foothills to downtown and to campus on the weekends."
"Cheaper bus fair for the area youth"
"As someone who would rather not drive, the fact that a car is necessary in Tucson is disheartening. There do not seem to be very good alternatives - there aren't enough bus routes, no light rail, etc. Tucson is not a small city anymore, although it likes to think it is. We need to take a good look at how we're developing and make smart investments in infrastructure, and I hope a good mass transit system is one of them (not just freeways)."
"If we can't get a freeway system, let's add a light rail system. I would like to be more sustainable and not drive often, but I can't depend on the Sun Tran."
"Make SunTran so efficient that people prefer it to driving to school/work"
"Too many cars and not enough viable transportation options"
"Sprawled out so it's hard to connect the different directions together w/public transportation"

Keep our region's roads and infrastructure in good repair.   Top  (DI)

". . . it is difficult to keep our eyes on the cars ahead and the enormous pot holes, all at the same time."
"The roads in Tucson are rough and need repaving."
 "Pot holes in roads"
"Poor road maintenance makes it feel like we live in a really dumpy community, and it probably appears that way to visitors as well."
 "Better road maintenance"
"While Tucson has grown, and there have been many road improvements to the main roads, many of the smaller roads have had no attention; often building takes place increasing the volume of traffic with no road improvements"

Increase the viability and safety of biking as a mode of transportation.   Top  (DI)

"I appreciate the city's willingness to provide decent routes for those who choose to ride a bicycle."
"The primary consideration in transportation is the automobile, but that isn't sustainable. We need better ways to bike and walk to our destinations."
"Bike and ped planning included in transportation planning . . "
"Cars and bikes need to know how to treat each other."
"Cycling in Tucson is dangerous since the bike routes are unclear and often bike lanes disappear at busy intersections."
"Existing bike paths don't have lights or are broken. Dark alley ways are not safe, especially for a young woman. Aviation bike path in particular."
"Get cyclists along the road to realize they are a bicycle and not master of the asphalt domain."
"Continuing to create good NS and EW corridors like 3rd street bike boulevard."

Plan with difficult transportation circumstances in mind.   Top  (DI)

"Costs of water and transportation will further divide haves and have nots"
"Poor transportation limits economic growth in the community"
 "Seniors without mobility"
 "Single mom stuck at home"
"Difficult for kids without cars to get places"
"A grocery bag limit on buses makes shopping difficult."
"As we grow, it's going to take longer to get everywhere."
". . . although there is shopping within walking distance, it is too dangerous to cross 6 lanes of traffic to get there."
"While I live within the city limits, it's still at least 1/2 mile to the nearest bus stop."
". . . mixed zoning leads to a further distance between destinations and leads to the need to drive a car rather than walk."
"Rural and outlying areas have almost no access to public transportation."
". . . employment is limited when available workers cannot reach all areas"
"People stay in their cars because otherwise they'll get scorched."

Increase the quality and variety of nearby amenities and venues.   Top  (DI)

"A professional place for talent to perform in a comfortable and suitable environment would add opportunities for major entertainment that by passes Tucson now."
"Tucson can create a charming downtown core and outlying areas can develop similar mini cores where people can congregate for recreation, shopping etc. There is no evidence of such planning in the development of these areas, in spite of what Rio Nuevo was supposed to be, since it did not happen. Creativity needs to be applied to this town, and it should be a requirement."
"Saks, Niemans, not even a lowly Nordstroms. One decent shopping center in town (La Encantada) no men's store, no butcher shops, no bakery, nothing except tire stores."
"Green Valley Village to be the core of the town (poorly designed shopping center, no downtown)"
"Need more mixed, flexible use must be done appropriately stakeholder input pocket park (example)"
"Better parking downtown when attending music hall and convention center"

Reduce the travel distance to desired destinations.   Top  (DI)

"We shouldn't have to travel far from our homes to work and play."
"Accessibility is low. So it hurts jobs and growth"
"Very spread out. Cars are necessary because distances are not walkable."
"More youth activities spread out across town - not just downtown"
"The methods in which grocery stores are placed."
"I'd like to think that I don't need to use a car for local trips."
"It would be easier to experience the arts if there were an arts district in Tucson, now it is all spread out."
"I would love to live in a more urban environment. Even mid-town feels like suburbia to me. I want to be able to walk to most destinations, like stores, services etc."

Fully include bicycles when designing or redesigning the community.   Top  (DI)

"I am a cyclist and believe that cities can be livable without being overly dense, loud or dirty and that designing cities on a bike/pedestrian scale is the way to get there."
"Friendly people, neighborly, not too much cement (like big cities), bicycle paths/routes, walk to shopping (Rincon Market)."
"I can bicycle or walk most places, yet I have a yard where I can grow things."
"I wish I lived in a neighborhood with sidewalks and bike paths (not just lanes on the busy street) so I could take advantage of the gorgeous weather 9 mos of the year and walk or bike with my family to do my errands and be out in my community safely and healthfully."
"Trails, bike lanes tie us together and are unique to Tucson."

Make our region more pedestrian friendly and safer to walk.   Top  (DI)

"We need to get more people off the roads and make Tucson a more pedestrian friendly environment. Hopefully the modern streetcar project will go towards achieving these goals."
"Every time i walk home i always walk in the dirt and every time it rains my shoes muddy and dirt."
". . . there are no sidewalks or lights in my neighborhood . . ."
"We need more walk friendly areas like 4th Av"
"More trees and walkways so I can walk when it's hot."
"More bicycle & pedestrian friendly streets"
"Crosswalks on Euclid by U of A = dangerous - buses not stopping on main streets blocking traffic"
"Hard to find places for children to walk around without a parent and feel they are safe."
"Change the layout of public transportation and pedestrian crossings (build bridges for the mid-block crosswalks to cut down on fatalities and accidents)."
"I use the sidewalk to remain alive when commuting to work downtown."
"Creating neighborhood hubs where grocery stores, drugstores, department stores and other necessities are within walking distance would encourage neighbors knowing neighbors and reduce the problems caused by automobiles."
"Smart growth = social connections should be fostered; walkability, aging in place"
"Tucson is not a walkable city and it is necessary to drive EVERYWHERE."
"Enlarge upon the community culture of walking"

Maximize easy connectedness among people when designing the functional layout of cities and the region   Top  (DI)

"There are too many areas of segregation. For example: one area is primarily industrialized, one area is neighborhood, one area is businesses."
"Besides University of Arizona to some extent, there is no one thing that binds together the community."
". . . light rail links to hubs in every region of the city."
"The built environment has no coziness . . . it is suburbia with no interesting core."
"I feel like Tucson is finally starting to 'grow up.' The size of our community is large enough to support exciting opportunities for arts and entertainment, yet not so big as to be completely overwhelming. I am not opposed to Tucson growing in size, as long as we build the infrastructure (roads!) to support it."
"Latinos were here before Anglos, yet now the majority of Latinos are geographically segregated from central Tucson which is where the city appears to thrive (university, downtown)"
"There doesn't seem to be a city center, just isolated spots where there are stores here, restaurants there, businesses there. I'd love to see more of a village model where there are several larger city centers."

Maintain a clean and attractive visual appearance of the built environment   Top  (DI)

"This is a beautiful city with beautiful people. It hurts me personally to see so many run-down buildings along major streets -- like Speedway, Grant, etc. Our city needs to go on a major beautification project."
"There are some old, dirty areas of Tucson, and it makes it look dumpy. Appearances mean a lot to people, and I think some of the older, crappier areas of Tucson are a turn off to folks who would otherwise love living here."
"I like good architecture, there is no charm in the houses here, they look like boxes"
"Better care of the boulevards that are overgrown with weeds and have accumulated trash"
"Many streets have very ugly medians/shoulders/sidewalks with overgrown plants, weeds, garbage and are very bad eyesores."
 "We build crrrap."
"Most of the new developments in Tucson are right out of the Southern California playbook; no architectural style or sense of the desert. So are our commercial spaces. Ugh."
"Driving through many of Tucson's older neighborhoods is like visiting a war zone. There is a ton of vacant and underutilized land, trash, and poorly maintained properties."
"Driving thru Tucson on 10 is depressing. It is junky and dirty looking. Gives a bad impression of the city. And so many neighborhoods are scary looking."

Increase residential density in a controlled and sensitive manner   Top  (DI)

"More density and walkability in certain places near retail and other neighborhood services would connect me to my neighborhood and reduce the amount of time I spend in the car."
"More mixed-use, mixed-income, high-density, housing with public transportation"
"Integrate high density but don't lose community or quality of life for people who already live there."
"The low-density development that has dominated over the past 40-60 years diminishes quality of life now and particularly in the future (fossil fuel use, environmental impacts, health impacts)."
"Increase central Tucson density/disempower obstructive neighborhood associations."
"I don't like being forced to share walls, live close to people. I like my privacy and the feeling of open spaces."
"Additional population density downtown would provide more business for the downtown core."
"Condos above stores is a great idea."
"Old neighborhoods with low density & the potential for a high quality of life."
"Retain lifestyle promote economic growth consider density"

Reduce sprawl and focus development on core population centers   Top  (DI)

"I am concerned that Tucson keeps spreading out as people always want to live on the fringes of town."
"Don't bulldoze my desert and put stucco boxes on it"
"These far flung communities create longer commutes for residents, and present air quality problems and traffic jams among other things."
"Sprawl is spreading city services too thin."
"I don't want Tucson to become a generic big city, but more than that, I don't want us to just languish at the expense of sensible progress"
"The low-density development and sprawl wastes resources and threatens the natural beauty of our surroundings."
"KEEP green space and undisturbed areas. I've lived in big(ger) cities on both the East and West coast, which have become giant parking lots. Tucson still has the desert appeal."
"The myth of limitless land in western cities is done."
"We still think in terms of single-family detached residences (The American Dream). Different times now."
"With sprawl, you lose the sense of place and the unique identify of the Tucson region. You also destroy the resources that make this area so desirable and attractive."
"It is disheartening to see so many crackerjack tract homes built on bladed-over pristine desert when there is so much infill land still to use."
"Slow sprawl and focus development on the urban core."

Find a negotiated middle ground among competing views on growth   Top  (DI)

"For years there has been a strong no growth attitude and development structure that created a reputation that chases away clean, higher paying industry and business. This needs to be re-balanced."
"Growth is critical to the long term sustainability of our area. Our current city and county leadership is largely anti-growth."
 "Change hostility towards city growth"
"Tucson feels like a real town. It's not a place where growth is out of control and you see the same stores and eateries around every corner. It feels real."
"You grow or you die! Make all the entities in Pima county more receptive to business and development. Establish necessary controls but eliminate the abuse of these controls. . . As a business man, I am constantly being dinged or harassed by some rule or official that has nothing better to do."
"It would be a great day when we have support from Pima County on pro growth developments."
-----

"Accept reality that water is going to be a limiting resource to growth."
"There are many vacant, abandoned properties and buildings that should to be occupied or repurposed rather than fostering future indiscriminate growth."
"I would like to see . . . zoning changed to encourage higher mixed-use density."
"Bigger is not better . . . No more expansion into the desert, no more subsidies for developers. Change the focus to sustainability, and if the community shrinks ... good."
"I hope that planners will remember and honor our rural heritage in mindfully planning for the inevitable post-recession growth of our region."
"Promote greater density within the built region and stop destroying the desert."
"Tucson has been sprawling for decades. Its lack of long range planning has given birth to competitive outlying communities that are upstaging and undermining Tucson's infrastructure needs. Oro Valley will soon become the cultural destination because of its tight planning and growth controls. Marana will suck the area dry of water with its lack of restricted growth."
"Should be people over land choices - not land over people choices."

"Something needs to unify this community so that the right decisions can be made towards a common vision for the future"

Clarify and specify government's role in developing the region   Top  (DI)

"The current recession can be used to re-examine and re-direct our priorities from a boom-town that caters to massive housing projects leap-frogging into the rural areas to an innovative community that capitalizes on our abundant sunshine and invests in the most dense areas of the valley with infrastructure improvements."
"I continue to hear unbelievable stories about bureacracy's opposition to business and development."
"Most of the region is unfriendly to business and development."
"I am concerned that if development does not have to meet some criteria, the Tucson landscape could be turned into sprawling L.A. Suburbs."
"We have few examples of well planned, functional and appealing development."
"I'm frustrated by the waste of fancy plans that don't happen."
"I would freeze the boundaries of the Tucson active water management area and issue no further development permits."

"I would like to have a community that comes together to face development issues, rather than posturing against each other."

Ensure that the redevelopment of Downtown Tucson is a success.   Top  (DI)

"A vital urban core is the 'beating heart' of a city. Without it we're just a series of linked suburban strip-malls."
"Downtown areas should be havens for the community . . ."
"There are so many wonderful things that could be happening . . ."
"We need walkways, horse trails, an interactive science center, movie theaters, coffee shop, a Trader Joe's or Sunflower, a pool, a gym, boutique hotel, amenities that appeal to the neighborhood and to tourists alike."
"Would like to see more downtown type walking environments, such as in the Scottsdale area."
"Clubs DO NOT make a downtown"
"I believe downtown should provide more density and student housing and not let it spill over in established single-family residential neighborhoods"
"A strong vibrant downtown positively affects the whole region."
"A city this size needs a thriving downtown and Tucson does not have it"
"I live downtown and am grateful for a supportive community in all aspects of my life. People I meet know friends of mine and it gives me a sense of hope."
"Restaurants, galleries, theatre, places to walk around - all downtown and close to each other"
"I have been disgusted and disappointed by the staggeringly inept approach to downtown planning."
"Being able to move large projects like Rio Nuevo forward is important to establishing a vibrant downtown. The inability to make that happen is disappointing."
"I work downtown- it's like a ghost town after 5 pm weekdays and almost all weekends. Need a reason to come downtown. Also visitors are used to a 'real' downtown as in other parts of the country."
"I don't feel safe in downtown Tucson after dark."
"The culture and flavor of Tucson, primarily in the older, more established areas including downtown and university area. There is a vibe associated with these areas that is uniquely Tucson and separates us from other towns/cities."
"Coming from a vibrant downtown (Indianapolis), I am saddened by the lack of planning and foresight in the governmental and business communities. We have one of the best locations for promoting tourism and conventions but the worst facilities. Look at Albuquerque for an example of a comparable sized city that has emphasized its strengths. I have asked many times: who are the business leaders in this community and how do they lead? There is no answer. Perhaps because Tucson has not be able to attract Tucson-based businesses."
"I live close to downtown, and there is always something cool and fun to do that I have never seen before. The revitalization of the downtown area has greatly benefited me and really improved my quality of life."
"Need to promote and communicate about what is already happening"
 "Do downtown right"

Support new business development and business expansion   Top  (DI)

"Instead of putting up obstacles to opening business, become more welcoming. This does not mean we need to compromise all of our codes etc., but we could work together with businees to create win/win."
"Larger businesses will not move here until we improve our education system."
"How many jobs are necessary to support a greater population?"
"Tucson's economy is not sufficiently diverse to grow long-term. We need more industries here of all kinds. We have very few large, diverse companies and then a whole lot of small businesses. A community that has the doctors and lawyers to help the small businesses serve each other is fine, but for long-term expansion and growth we need more."
"We need a community that embraces business. We need capital formation, incentives to start and grow businesses, more tech transfer from the university, focus areas, easier business licensing, etc. It needs to be much more business friendly."
". . . I mean more synergy between local governments, businesses, BANKS, University, and citizen groups for investing in job creation. There are some good things going on - Treo and Bios5 - but not enough. Rio Nuevo should return to its roots - what it was designed for. I want to see the region prosper!"
"Open space does not generate jobs."
". . . moving ahead to make our schools the kind that make new business want to come here because the families can count on the best for their children from K-12."
"You can't beat a research one university for pumping grads, research dollars, professional development opportunities, and sports into the local economy."
"The infighting between local governments is creating a lack of opportunities to recruit businesses and create new jobs for the future of the community."
"More support for small local business"
"The old pueblo where things are charmingly dilapidated is not consistent with a progressive metropolitan area. Attracting outside investors and bringing private capital into our region for job creation and revenue generation is more difficult because we do not have capacity, funding tools, and an attitude of infrastructure expansion or accomodation for business."

Reduce barriers to business success   Top  (DI)

 "Simplify government controls on businesses."
". . . straighten out the insane fiscal structure, esp ridiculously expensive tax credits for charitable donations, no wonder we are broke."
"The attitude of business people is that residents are their enemies."
 "Tucson has no business identity."
"We are all one social and economic unit, the artificial jurisdictional boundarys are both the result of, and continue, us vs. them arguments."
"The Tucson community needs to support businesses and make it reasonable for them to operate here (instead of putting up obstacles and having negative attitudes)"
"We need to elect people to the AZ legislature who will stop bleeding the state of all that state government needs to do well. We need to support education, infrastructure, etc. and reform the tax code/rates to meet goals. Right now the state is an embarassment. It turns off investors and visitors."
"Elected officials in So. AZ treat economic growth as if its a dirty word, they feel its someone else's job, theirs is to extract as much as they can from development/businesses in taxes and fees to fund social and environmental agendas"
"Tucson - where public jobs flourish and median income is low - is not a good brand"
"Tucson's business community and public sector are by in large old school and don't make accomodations - flex time, telecommuting, job sharing, etc - for the changing demographics."
"Not everyone has vehicles, so need jobs where people live"
"We need better government leaders that will plan for the future, make sure things get done, and build a vibrant, economically sustainable community . . ."
"We are not nimble, dynamic, responsive to taking advantage of opportunities because we have a bureaucratic culture. Initiating and sustaining a series of improvements for lean, accountable, responsive, collaborative government would improve the near and longer term quality of life."
". . . You also end up competing against unlicensed companies who don't carry worker's comp or carry other insurance and pay their employees under the table because they are not being caught or punished for this."

Increase the number and quality of jobs   Top  (DI)

"Jobs are being lost due to inability to grow and establish business. Too many tax issues and administrative roadblocks."
"More jobs with purpose for youth"
"We must create more jobs and opportunities. We must fight for great companies to move here."
"The region has so much to offer, but the government seems to reject the most important concept. In order to support a million people, there have to be jobs. There needs to be creative thinking in attracting corporate headquarters. I want my children to stay & work in Tucson!"
"There are few high-paying jobs and professionally our move to Tucson has been very limiting for me."
"It's really a shame - we often think about moving away from Tucson and our home just for increased job opportunities elsewhere. We love this city but feel like the city doesn't feel the same about us!"
"Lack of opportunities for professionals in middle to upper middle professions"
"I can't realistically look my 17 year in the eye and tell her the economic future here is bright. She's yet another smart one (Univ High School) likely to leave and not look back. It is unlikely that my kids will be able to find meainingful work in Tucson after graduating from college. This is a travesty."
"We cannot keep our young people, our most precious asset, if we cannot provide them with financial opportunity."
"We have an enormous brain drain from our University. There must be a business structure that keeps this talent here in our region."

Improve wages and salaries   Top  (DI)

 "Better paying jobs."
"Get more jobs and jobs that pay a decent wage"
"I was appalled when I moved here and found out what jobs pay."
"I was laid off in March, and have yet to find good paying job."
"Increase jobs/opportunities that pay above a living wage"
"Low paying jobs with no benefits; divisions are sharp between poverty and middle class"
"More interesting and well paying jobs."
"Pay raises so teachers don't have to pay out of pocket"
"If better paying jobs, opportunities were introduced to the area we would see the living standard rise and people feel better about themselves."
"Without good paying jobs, new community members will not purchase homes from us."
"A large number of Tucson jobs are in the service industry, which is not often a long-term career goal and generally low-paying."
"Better paying jobs help the economy, make for a more vibrant community and keep our graduates here."
"Low paying jobs with no benefits; divisions are sharp between poverty and middle class."
"We have way too many people in this community that are just barely getting by. This is an otherwise 'easy' and cheap place to live, but only if you have a good-paying job, which we seriously lack. We need a more sustainable economy that provides opportunities"
"Tucson has been known as a minimum wage town for years. If better paying jobs, opportunities were introduced to the area we would see the living standard rise and people feel better about themselves."
"I just wish there were better jobs available here for U of A graduates."

Press for a well educated workforce   Top  (DI)

"Tucson needs more job opportunities and this will require that the city be known for its educated workforce."
"Our P-20 education needs to be a beacon & mecca which will then attract high knowledge, high value employers."
"A good education is key to getting a good job which impacts the life style and opportunities that you can provide for your family."
"Kids are getting out of school barely qualifying for service jobs."
"Lack of a well educated job pool, poor schools make it difficult to recruit high level employees and new industry."
"We're seriously lacking in quality education and in our abilty to generate a qualified labor force for the future."
"Broadly speaking, I don't think metro Tucson schools are doing an adequate job preparing young people to compete in the global economy. Compound that with our brutally high drop-out rate, and we're headed for trouble. Cheap labor won't cut it for southern AZ."
"We need to be better educated as a city; this might attract more businesses with high-paying jobs."
"48% of Tucson's Hispanic students do not graduate from high school. There can be no economic development with uneducated and/or untrained workers."

When my daughter was at ASU, in the school of fine arts, I got a weekly email about all the arts presentations on campus. I asked at U of A if they had such a thing, and they didn't. It seems like it would be good for students to connect their work to the 'real' world, and for Tucson to connect to the students."
"Work with the University of Arizona to make it more accessible to local residents."
"Id like to see U of A become a part of the community."

Forcing teachers to teaching to a test rather than to approach situations with rational thinking and problem solving strategies produce citizens who are inflexible, unimaginative, and ill-prepared to function successfully in a dynamic, ever-changing reality."

"Increase central Tucson density/disempower obstructive neighborhood associations."
"All communities attract political extremes as a minority of its active leadership but Tucson has surrendered to community apathy that has left its leadership the matter of choice for its political minority voices. This has resulted in good old boy politics driven by a handful of insider businessmen who do not have the full community interests at heart."
"The youth in Tucson should have opportunities to become involved in local and community issues and initiative so they can become more responsible and civically-minded citizens."
"Neighborhood groups drive the agenda at City Hall and its bad for business which means bad for jobs and prosperity."

Reduce wastefulness in government and improve overall effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability   Top  (PH)

"Portland OR has no city or state sales tax, yet manages to get all the great things (from public transit to open space) that Tucson claims they want, but want to charge via tax to get. This ties back into lack of accountability with the funds."
"Right now the elected leaders have no vision for the future of the community. The wrangling over downtown development and the waste of taxpayer dollars tells me there is no one in charge. They all have their fiefdom and will do nearly all to protect same."
"Managing money well help in all areas of our city."
"Our local elected officials have spent the last 30 years turning Tucson into a fiscal nightmare. Too much money is spent on the wrong priorities and too little is focused on the core services which should be its No. 1 focus."
"Id like to see more efficient and effective government for the common good - real info, real people, real problems, real solutions."
"Our city government is dysfunctional for reasons that go beyond personalities and relate to the very structure of government."
"Would like to see the street car come, and see how it all links downtown together. The Rio Nuevo hotel outcome is disappointing. We should have had something built by now. The inability of the City to get things done, and the amount of wasted millions, is beyond frustrating and disappointing."

"I'd love to see us get along better in areas like business and government so we could have a great down town area."
"For years there has been a strong 'no growth' attitude and development structure that created a reputation that chases away clean, higher paying industry and business. This needs to be re-balanced."
"The city has lost too many large companies and industries to keep future business from exploring Tucson as a base of operations. The loss of major military contracts, etc. has lost the city much needed revenue. And, it takes too long for businesses, even small ones, to get through all the red tape to start a business in the city."
"Tucson and Pima County needs improved government operations that are more business friendly."

"Get rid of no go Rio Nuevo."
"Have been way too many newspaper articles about local government blowing through finances (i.e. Rio Nuevo) with large promises and lack of delivery."
"It was disheartening and is now irritating to hear discussion about this project. This community had many ideas for projects that were not grandiose, but that highlighted our wonderful heritage. Now it is discussion about a hotel or no hotel and who did not follow-through on their commitments and there is a great deal of fingerpointing it seems. What was energizing and exciting is no longer."

 "Tucson needs growth controls."
"Growth is a self-fulfilling prophecy, if we plan for it."
"Our city has no strategic plan to deal with future growth. Our city has always been reactionary in addressing problems rather than strategic. It always costs more to retro-fit roads, water, sewer etc. because past and current leadership never planned for our region to reach 1 million people."
"I would like to see limits put on sprawl in the region (i.e. establish a growth boundary) and zoning changed to encourage higher mixed-use density. I believe it is better for the community and the surrounding desert as a whole. It would also help support more efficient, eco-friendly modes of transportation."
"Protect the Sonoran desert through thoughtful building."
"Fragility of the natural environment should motivate us to plan better."
"Development is subsidized by taxpayers. Local government has done some things to make development pay for itself, but it needs to do a lot better. The cost of expanding and enlarging infrastructure, including roads and schools, should be borne by developers and the people who choose to live in the suburbs."
"More decisions in metro area like Tucson Water footprint conscious decision of where to grow and not grow."
"Water and energy will drop our growth if we don't plan in a different way."

Encourage (re)development in already populated areas in a way that doesnt negatively impact existing neighborhoods and improves the aesthetics and character of the built environment   Top  (PH)

"Encourage more diversity in the built environment."
"It is disheartening to see so many "crackerjack" tract homes built on bladed-over pristine desert when there is so much infill land still to use."
"Develop the 4th avenue/University area more."
"Form-based code - design based. Design standards are needed or Tucson's uniqueness will be limited."
"This is a beautiful city with beautiful people. It hurts me personally to see so many run-down buildings along major streets -- like Speedway, Grant, etc. Our city needs to go on a major beautification project. We need improved signs on businesses, better landscaping. Zoning (Speedway) years ago was bad. I'm not sure how that can change, but it sure would be nice to get a bunch of money to improve how our city looks! My husband resisted moving here for a long time because he thought it looked "junky". Is this our strategy for keeping others out???"
"I'm in real estate and have development experience and look forward to improving Tucson's run-down neighborhoods and creating change, but the City needs to create more incentive and get rid of the obstacles to encourage more redevelopment."
"I want to live in a city that understands the value of aesthetics to people's attitudes. Tucson could be amazing if the land planning and architecture even attempted to mirror its natural beauty."
"Ban all development away from downtown or central Tucson."
"There should be a limit as to how high people can build. At night when I'm enjoying the stars from my home in the foothills, it's irritating to see lights from homes up the side of the Catalinas when the rest of the area is dark."
"Develop a stricter interpretation of R-1 zoning, or give some teeth to NPZ guidelines."
"There are pockets of old buildings and junk collections that present an eyesore to me and travelers coming through Tucson on 1-10 and immediately off of I-10 and onto I-19. Our downtown and the immediate adjacent areas should reflect the culture of of this area. Whatever happened to Rio Nuevo?"
"Encourage redevelopment in the city. Too much effort is spent trying to preserve decaying neighborhoods. Some are worth saving and others are not. The vision needs to be broader than the limited neighborhood view."

Develop transportation plans that emphasize transportation options for all residents and that facilitate ease of travel to all parts of the region   Top  (PH)

"The built environment creates the culture we live in. The current approach to planning (Euclidean zoning regulations) leads to transportation problems (car dependency), which in turn results in laziness"
"Tucson's lack of a cross-town freeway and loop system is city planning malpractice at its finest! The poor road system in Tucson makes driving a nightmare in any part of town."
"Hard to travel around-Tucson is not that big and has never aggressively addressed this issue."
"The traffic is too congested. Something needs to be improved. There are various road projects taking place, which is good, but Tucson needs to grow up and realize they are a big city and plan transportation accordingly."
"I am frustrated by the lack of planning and coordination of road construction as it seems to make little sense to cause bottlenecks all over the city at the same time. Not to mention how very long it takes to complete a project."
"Tucson is in danger of becoming as big and ungainly as Phoenix. The low-density development and sprawl wastes resources and threatens the natural beauty of our surroundings. I worry that the city planning will deter from the creation of a good mass transit system."
"The small town planning has to stop. It is a source of anguish to see how traffic is handled, how the streets still are built as if this is a small town. There is a huge amount of traffic out there. There needs to be better planning."
 "Like the bike friendly planning."
"Unfortunately, the city of Tucson developed without much planning or vision. It takes a ridiculous amount of time to just get across town. We need a cross-town freeway/expressway running east to west. I personally avoid doing any business on the west side of town (and I mean west of Campbell) because it takes me so long to get there from my home (near Wilmot). I have many friends who feel the same way, and it must be hurting business."
"As an advocate of modes of transportation other than those using fossil fuels, i appreciate the city's willingness to provide decent routes for those who choose to ride a bicycle."
"I know road construction is needed, but I think there needs to be a better plan in place so there is limited construction during rush hour traffic, especially on the freeways. In town, parallel roads should not have simultaneous construction. We need better alternate paths."
"There needs to be a better infrastructure plan. With a growing community, we cannot rely on just our own individual vehicles. This is why we are in the traffic mess we are in today, with an RTA program readily admitting that those monies are like a downpayment on a much larger and costly problem. There should be a light rail or similar transit system available for this community."
"We need to find better mass and rapid transit in Tucson, and between Tucson and Phoenix. If we don't want to end up like L.A. or Phoenix, we must look into innovative and energy efficient transportation alternatives."

Reduce regulation where appropriate, streamline the permitting process, and provide other incentives to attract business and foster economic development   Top  (PH)

 "Provide incentives for economic development."
"It's difficult to start a new business in this city because of existing codes and regulations."
"Its hard to do business and grow in this region."
"the city is one of the worst places to try to open a business, this has caused many small businesses to either not open or move out."
"We need a community that embraces business. We need capital formation, incentives to start and grow businesses, more tech transfer from the university, focus areas, easier business licensing, etc. It needs to be much more business friendly."
"Want the ability to open small business more easily."
"More incentive and less obstacles for companies to relocate here."
"Jobs are being lost due to inability to grow and establish business. Too many tax issues and administrative roadblocks."

"Less taxes on dumb projects that produce nothing - change elected officials that have been there too long."
"Too dependent on sales tax - need stable revenue for good government and good policy."
 "Lower taxes."
 "Reduced sales tax."
"Move revenues from sales taxes to property taxes with commercial property taxed at a higher rate than residential property."
"Phoenix gets a better deal with more tax dollars because most of the area is incorporated."
"BECAUSE EVERYTHING, TAX, ETC., THAT THEY DO AFFECTS MY LIFE STYLE. I have a very limited income, as do thousands of others. We are being taxed out of our homes, doing with less services, doing with less that makes latter life more pleasant. We don't ask much - we just want comfortable living without a lot of hassle."
"Higher property taxes - The community pays way too little and therefore basic infrastructure, like roads, is in a bad way."
"Our taxes are too low - we cannot support a thriving city and region with the current tax base, and threats to cut taxes further is insane."
"Incorporate more of the county so we would receive a fair share of our tax dollars."
"Reduce taxes - the sales tax was increased again to 9.1 percent and hopefully not again after the 11-2-2010 voting. Property tax is too much with the majority again going to education which also is too much."

Preserve and celebrate the regions unique and beautiful natural environment   Top  (PH)

"I like that when I am in the city I can look in any direction and see a beautiful mountain range. I am also proud of the fact that the County (and other local jurisdictions) has made preserving open space a priority and I hope that never changes."
"The natural environment makes Tucson a sacred place to live."
"Stop chewing up the desert to build houses - rebuild old neighborhoods make them more desirable."
"I think that it crucial that Tucson does not build into our national parks and preserves Tucson's natural beauty. The weather is so great here that being outside is so appealing and it is so important that we have beautiful, clean, and fun parks/facilities to enjoy the outside. I also think that this attracts tourism."
"Tucson is a great place to bring people visiting Arizona for the first time because it seems to have more natural beauty than Phoenix. And who doesn't love Tucson sunsets?"

"I love the 'dry heat'. The view of mountains any direction one looks gives a feeling of being in a protected environment."

 "Well maintained parks are important."
"I think the park system is very good and hope it will continue to improve."
"Keep building parks and open spaces as the city grows."
"Add more parks in the city limits - we would all benefit. The river walk is wonderful and could be extended."
"More parks so children can have a place to play."
"In all the local parks I've visited, all have been well laid out, clean and provide what I feel to be a safe place for me to exercise outdoors. The people I encounter also add to the experience."
"We either need cleaner parks or just more of them."
"Before moving here, I would often walk for exercise at local parks. In Tucson, I don't feel safe doing this by myself, and the parks are not very beautiful or serene."
"Whether it's parks for kids, or senior league baseball, there is something here for everyone."
"I thoroughly enjoy being outside and I know that it is important that everyone has access to fresh air in a safe place. Tucson is woefully deficient in park land. Connecting the linear parks along all our waterways is a big step."

Maintain and improve air quality in the region by providing more clean transportation options   Top  (PH)

"I care about maintaining air quality and want to make our streets usable to all modes of transportation (besides vehicles)."
"I want to walk outside and breathe the clean air for me and my family - it rejuvenates me."
"View of the mountains and surrounding desert areas will be lost to degradation of air quality which impacts all of us."
"Air quality is important so we need to improve mass transit options - a light rail system would be fabulous. Phoenix has one, Albuquerque has one that goes all the way to Santa Fe - it can be done."
"The air quality, the dessert, and the surrounding environment make this a great place to live."

Protect and preserve our natural resources, in particular water, so that future generations may continue to enjoy a high quality of life in the region   Top  (PH)

"I want to see every person making small sacrifices to save the desert. Using less water, volunteering to help pull invasive species, carpooling and driving less etc."
"So much could be done to make Tucson a model. We currently seem to have no foresight when it comes to use of resources. Our recycling is spotty and limited. Our public transportation is lacking. Our use of green energy is practically non-existent. Our water use is outrageous. There is so much potential and we've barely scratched the surface."
"Water, especially here, in a scarce resource. We do not have many more years to figure out ways to sustainably live in Tucson."
"Shift to 100% solar and increase rainwater harvesting."
"It's the only thing that will make living here in the future feasible. Those of us who love the desert will be happy to live with water restrictions."
"Uncontrolled development destroys the desert and obscures the mountains. It uses more water than we have. And it does nothing to create permanent jobs."
"We live in such a unique environment, and it's important that we protect it from overdevelopment."
"Tucson is progressive in its policies and mindset with regard to living a sustainable lifestyle. I want to minimize my impact on the earth."
"It really sets us apart from other cities and towns. In fact, it's made me more aware of environmental issues -- when visiting towns with grass lawns, I think of the expense and waste of watering and maintaining them."
"Increase efforts to reduce net water consumption and reduce runoff."
"It is concerning to see so many golf courses and high water usage landscapes when we have a finite amount of water available."

"I feel that massive efforts can be made to produce solar power here in Tucson, both bringing jobs to the area and reducing carbon emissions."
"I would like to see Tucson capitalize on our status as a solar city and combine forces to do what it takes to influence the state legislature and corporation commission to offer carrots and sticks to build our green industry."
"Encourage solar energy use and water harvesting more."
"Too many people don't earn enough to have the best quality of life. This should be one of the solar capitals of the world. It would employ more people in jobs that are worthwhile."
"More incentives to attract green businesses (solar in particular) to come to Tucson."
